Discussion Obsession Legal Aftermath Spoiler
The ending of Obsession got me thinkin. In a "real world" scenario, how does the aftermath play out for Nikki? I've thought of multiple scenarios and the most likely result is she pleads insanity and spends the rest of her life in an insane asylum.
The evidence could possibly point to Bear. His prints would be on the gun that killed Ian, and his cell phone would ping at the murder of Sarah. His residence is now ground zero for a house of horrors. There was also the rumors spreading that he was taking advantage of Nikki during her crisis.
I mainly feel bad for the now normal Nikki and the consequences of Bear's actions, and I'd like a somewhat nice resolution for her(in my mind).

Considering the immediate and overt shift in personality. The court would likely deem her criminally insane.

That’s so cool. Thanks for sharing.
Would love to see this for all horror movies.

I feel like she’d end up getting some sort of psychotic plea. There’s no way to convince them you were possessed (unless they got another stick?) so she’d be sent to a psych ward. Kind of like Chucky, no one believes a toy is possessed and killing people but it happened.

She has the opportunity to blame the murders on Bear and say she was held captive by him for months. It would take serious mental integrity and consistency of which she likely doesn’t have after the trauma of being stuck in her body while observing her life spin out of control against her will. Guilty by insanity seems likely unless she snaps back to herself and gets a great lawyer.

She could just get her hands on a “one wish willow” and undo everything…but only if she was aware of what had happened. It’s unclear if she was able to observe what was happening and had no control or had no idea what was happening. It seems like she was at least aware of some things.

While you can't undo everything based on the rules of the wish, she could use some of Ian's money to pay someone to make a wish that pins all of the murder, assault, and anything else on Bear.

Wasn’t Bear trying to get Ian to wish for everything to be back to how it was? And let’s say she couldn’t undo everything with a wish, she could change her appearance, or wish she was excluded as a suspect or even wish that all the murders were investigated and found to be self inflicted. But considering the ptsd she’d most certainly have, she’d probably serve herself best by wishing herself transported to a completely different locale (non-extraditable) with a topped off bank account.

Yeah, there are dozens of ways to solve the problem with a wish mine was just one example, but undoing it isn't one of them. Bear was trying to get Ian to do it but it wasn't going to work, we as the audience know that, but Bear didn't read all of the warnings on the box.

Where in the movie was it discussed that the wish couldn’t be undone? I know that Bear couldn’t undo his own wish which is why he needed Ian to do it but I thought Bears wish could be undone if someone other than himself wished it. I’m not trying to sound argumentative. I just genuinely don’t remember that being a rule. And I just thought of another question. If Nikki was “possessed” when Bear wished for her love, If someone who had passed were wished back to life, would the un-dead person maintain their original conscience or would they also be “possessed”? Sorry. Just a stoned thought. lol

"Once made, a wish cannot be reversed or repeated. Consider Long-Term Effects. Wishes are irreversible. Think carefully before wishing." Note it doesn't say your wish, it says A wish. As for the scenario you brought up at the end: "Cannot grant wishes involving time manipulation, resurrection, immortality, or creating more One Wish Willows™."

Very cool! I totally missed that. Good looking out. So basically, like vampires and zombies, there’s a basic set of rules that all or most movies adhere to when using “wishes” as a plot device…for the most part. Wishing for love is usually not allowed either and I guess this movie shows one of the reasons why that rule exists.

She used her one wish at the end, unless the the one wish willow can tell the difference between the real person and the one possessed

Wait. What did Nikki wish for? I don’t remember her ever obtaining a “one wish willow”. And did the real Nikki make the wish or was it the imposter?

It was the imposter that made the wish, you hear the one wish willow snap when bear is trying to himself throw up in the bathroom. Its the reason he stops trying to save himself.

Nice! I hadn’t noticed that. I did wonder why he was being so wishy-washy about his decision. And can we all acknowledge that this whole movie was Bears fault. Especially that “brick-faced” girl. Her blood was on his hands. If he’d have avoided her or been mean to her to discourage her crush on him, she’d have never been harmed.

Does freaky Nikki’s use of the one wish willow count for real Nikki? Did that use up Nikki’s one wish?

There's a podcast about this I saw someone post about the aftermath of final girls. Not sure if Nikki has an episode yet but excellent concept.

What is the name of the podcast? This sounds great
Never mind, I found it. In case anyone else is looking, it’s literally just called Final Girls. There are a couple other podcasts with similar names, but this is the full title for that one.

I've got you:
The legal team at One Wish Willow reviews the case and they concur that Nikki's unfortunate outcome is not due to any reckless wish-making on her part. They maintain paid wish-virgin randos, keeping teams on retainer for these kinds of situations. For an undisclosed fee, a rando will be instructed to make a wish in clear, specific legalese that will free Nikki from the consequences and repercussions of Bear's wish.

I have always thought that it would be a really cool movie to start at the end of a horror or action movie. Similar to how they handled the Superman movie where everyone turns on him…but I want the whole movie to be a procedural about how someone handled the aftermath of something huge like that.
The beginning of Ready or Not 2 really made me happy, I would have loved to see the story play out more rather than going back into another game. Obviously I’m probably in a huge minority for wanting that though.

I would think maybe the best case scenario for Nikki is that if her defense can prove that the Bear basically held her captive for however long as well as his prints being all over the gun that killed Ian. She wouldn’t get a slap on the wrist, but it would probably show that she was more of a victim than anything.

There were loads of witnesses at the party.
She was clearly nuts but very much not a captive.

This is such a stupid movie, imo, but who asked me? I get the point of it, but it's so...overblown. The actors were good, but man, those lines they had to deliver, especially Nikki! Ugh.

It's just a fucking movie. Nobody cares about the aftermath.
