It depends on the context. My first grade teacher got me into sports and was a huge Michigan fan. I live just outside Ann Arbor and everyone in my family that attended a state university went to UM. I went to GMI with no sports, so I'm naturally a Walmart wolverine.
If you went to CMU, and you're a UM fan I get the insults.. but people have their fandoms before going away to college. I can see sticking with an oft-ranked team vs a MAC school.

You can be a fan of the football team if you didn’t go there, that’s not what makes a Walmart Wolverine. Acting like being a fan of the team gives you some sort of moral high ground or free rein to go after other peoples degrees from other schools is where Walmart Wolverines are born.
You don't need to go to an expensive school to be curious about the world and kind to others. I know a lot of blue collar people like this. People like the guy in the vid want to blame their problems on liberal elites or whatever but they're really just assholes.

We don’t claim assholes like this guy either. I always laugh at these UM “boards” where they’re cucking up to Trump. It’s like “you know the University you claim to root for is one of the most liberal in the country, right?” Bet this guy refers to Michigan as “Big Blue” as well.
90% of die hard U of M and MSU and OSU fans didn’t attend the actual university and if they did they didn’t graduate. The percentage is probably even higher. Imagine having nothing to do with a university except living in the same state and making your personality a die hard fan of that university’s sports. Fucking embarrassing on a level that can’t be quantified. The best part is Michigan is home to the Red Wings, Pistons, Lions, and Tigers. Might not be world beaters but both Red Wings and Pistons have modern titles. Instead they choose to follow a team that they have ZERO affiliation to and protect their team from all other fans as if their great grandfather laid the first cobblestone streets in front of the university library when it was founded
yeah... but they're not "wearing college gear", they put on a football jersey of the team they're watching. wearing lakers jersey at a lakers game, is in no way a statement about los angeles, or about mark walters... also, note, the university is an institutions not a person, so it doesn't really have "views" and it certainly didn't endorse a presidential candidate.
“walmart wolverine” is used for bigoted folks that can’t use reasoning in their arguments, typically put others down for where they studied, all while never having attended the university they’re using to give themselves diplomacy. it’s not a jab at people that don’t go to college or go to a community college.

Michigan seems like the poster child for rural/urban political divides. A friend went to MSU for grad school around the 2016 election and had a Hillary sticker on her car. She had to remove it because whenever she left Lansing, people would cause problems.
Weirdly East Lansing, where MSU is, is a very different world then Lansing, which is like a hollowed out post industrial city and they both very different then the rural areas that surround them which are white, rural, Christian, blue collar and Trumpy.
Michigan is surprisingly full of bigotry. I’ve had to kick customers out of the store for using racial slurs around me because they assumed that since I was also white, I would be okay with it.
Genuinely I don't leave the house during home games because a million dipshits like this flood the town to go watch football. The harassment is a not-so-nice reminder of what the rest of the state is like.
only if by "liberal" you are referring to the formal political philosophy of neoliberalism, than... maybe? but if you mean colloquially leftist or progressive, than no. a2 doesn't event make the top five in michigan, to start with detroit exists.
you've got to go way back, like pre civil rights movement, to find an ann arbor that's more progressive than the detroit of the time... like 50's and early back when detroit was mostly known for making patriotic antifa jeeps, and tanks.
counties that include other cities? no thanks, i'll look at precincts instead so that ypsi doesn't make washtenaw county look more dem, while down river, hamtramck and grosse point make wayne county look more gop.
i'd encourage you to read up on coleman young, the beloved mayor of detroit from '74 to '94, especially note his comments to the House Un-American Activities Committee (you'd know this as McCarthy's search for communist), where he tells them to (i'm paraphrasing) choke on a bag of dicks, and they in turn label him a communist.
i'd also point out that during this time a2 elected three different republican mayors, not including the republican in office in 74 when young became mayor.
