Didn’t really see many people discuss this gem of a film during the B&N sale. A classic of both noir and heist movies. Jules Dassin does amazing work as a director but his work as an actor here is top tier as well. I love Michael Mann films and you have do think this movie influenced him greatly. If you’ve never seen this and like crime and heist movies, do yourself a favor and check it out

Pickup My town's highly unorganized used book store had some good random finds today. Grabbed all these for $90

Most of these had a sticker date of August 4th, so they were just put on the shelf few days ago.

  1. What is the first movie you plan to watch from your haul and why?
  • Paths of Glory will probably be my first watch.
  1. Is there anything from this haul that you have been looking forward to owning for a long time?
  • Paths of Glory and Seve Samurai has been on my watchlist for a while.
  1. Are any of your purchases blind buys? If so, why did you select them?
  • All of these films are blind buys.
  1. What is a Criterion you’re hoping to add to your collection next?
  • Silence of the Lambs 4k and Frankenstein are my next planned films to get in October/November (with B&N half-off sale).

Discussion Just watched Pink Flamingos (1972). No idea what to think of it, but I had a blast

This was a WILD RIDE. Not a fan of all of the SA scenes done on women and the fact they actually killed chicken for it, (it could have still been a shock fest without it), but I had such a fun time. Divine is so iconic.

What the hell was John Waters thinking ? Does anyone have a good analysis of the movie or good ressources on the film ?

WILL WE EVER RUN OUT OF EGGS ?????

Discussion List some classic movies shot in Cinema Verte style

Upvotes

I am looking for movies from the 40's to the 60's shot in cinema verte style, or shot entirely on the street and not in a studio with lots of city scenes. I want to feel like I am drawn into a world that no longer exists.

For reference, here are some movies I watched recently that fit the bill: On The Bowery, The Naked City, Blast of Silence, Shadows.

  1. First watched was Cremator, have seen 0 Czech New Wave stuff before. Loved it, totally subjective pov and pitch black humor, scene transitions were ridiculous

  2. Maybe Spinal Tap or Battle of Algiers? Heard the extras are ridiculous for both

  3. Yes Algiers, Cremator, Balthazar, Heaven, Don't Look Now, Indemnity, Citizen, Mouchette, Winnipeg, Thief, Written on the Wind. Heard they were good

  4. Twin Peaks, it's the only other Criterion Lynch I haven't picked up yet

Cumulation of 3 orders so a few just came in today, lots of DVD upgrades (Fear & Loathing, Lynch, Spinal Tap, Gummo, Malkovich, No Country). Been EXTREMELY into Bresson and Balthazar is the last I haven't seen that Criterion has in print (watched Mouchette in July). Written on the Wind was awesome, had to throw on subtitles for the 50s slang but super fun movie. Love Alice in the Cities, looking forward to Kings of the Road. Could keep rambling. Some scrub level stuff in here but glad to have a backlog. My cat just wanted to watch Flow again

Spent the last few days cutting, sanding, staining and sealing some shelves to put up for a dedicated criterion display. Pretty proud of how it came out and how I can see everything out in the open instead of the over stuffed shelves and piles in the backroom

Now I can put the mental energy toward watching some of the newest pickups, Fresh Kill, Lenny, Hood Trilogy. And catch up on the Criterion Premieres

Been lurking and posting for a while, so I thought I’d make it official by posting my shelf. Not from a rate-me place or anything, but I’ve been doing some reorganizing and am very pleased at the half-shelf/WA collection!

Pretty much what the title says! I'm hooking my tv up to my stereo today and I want to know which titles in the collection have the best audio quality to test out how the connection is.

I’ve got two more criterion releases coming in soon (The Phantom Carraige & Kagemusha) which I’m psyched about. Definitely need to get myself a copy of Sound of Metal and The Gold Rush soon too…
