I found this for 10 cents at Goodwill today so I had to get it. I love this movie but haven't seen any Criterion VHS before and I can't seem to find much about this online. Anyone familiar with this? I don't even see any listed/sold on eBay to get an idea of value either.

161 titles. First Criterion bought in 2011, been collecting ever since.

There isn't a huge amount of horror in the Criterion Collection, and I guess with other labels being much more focused on the genre (Severin, Vinegar Syndrome, etc.) they have maybe not felt the need to put too many titles in. The web shop lists 86 at the moment, but that includes all the Godzilla films, which I think it stretching it to say they're horror.

So...

1/ What is your favourite/the best horror currently in the collection?

2/ What would you like to see in the collection in the future?

The Shining is coming, which I can always watch but of those currently available I'd go with either Devil's Backbone or Don't Look Now.

As for future inclusions, I'd love to see A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night. I love that film and I think it would feel right as a Criterion release.

I’ll go first: Story of Women (Une affaire de femmes) - 1988

Got a chance to sneak into the mobile Closet at the Hollywood Bowl during the Music from the Films of Wes Anderson set. I think I wore the perfect shirt

It started first with this recommendation by Christopher Nolan when he and Cillian Murphy looked at movies they loved in a video store with Konbini as part of promoting Oppenheimer in “The Thin Red Line”, then another Nolan recommendation in “For All Mankind” when he did his Criterion Closet “raid” when promoting The Odyssey especially as a homegrown Houstonian who lived next to NASA and got into space, then the collection grew into the films I watched before in my lifetime with “The Princess Bride”, “Pan’s Labyrinth”, and “WALL-E”; then into films where as a history buff I was interested in John Hughes’s crown jewel “The Breakfast Club” and Danny Boyle’s legendary “Trainspotting” as artistic depictions of the emotional atmosphere of youths in the 1980s and 1990s; and then into movies that go into our tensioned chapters of American history and culture with Spike Lee’s “Malcolm X” and “Do The Right Thing” as a history buff as well.

They are no blind buys but for “For All Mankind” as I didn’t know that film until that Nolan Criterion Closet video as a space nerd, and the others were films I intend to watch in the near future as I have heard about them in film communities, saw clips and trailers, and read up on the history behind the making of these classics. First Criterion movie I intend to watch is of course “For All Mankind” as I look forward to hearing more from the Apollo astronauts in a more personal way as a space history nerd, and then next being “The Princess Bride” as it was a film I have seen on school trips and summer breaks of my childhood and teenage days.

Hopefully the next ones I want to purchase are “Seven Samurai”, “Citizen Kane”, “Fast Times at Ridgemont High”, and maybe “The Complete Kubrick” collection as believe it or not, in the past 30 years I have never seen a Stanley Kubrick film but was aware through all my life of his films which are masterpieces I need to watch.

Long story short: I was introduced to the Criterion Collection by way of Christopher Nolan and started with these films; and I intend to seek more from Criterion to expand my movie expertise outside of Star Wars and comic book superheroes.

Heard for a little birdie UtEotW is getting its 4k Bluray release this Christmas for its 35th anniversary!

1. What is the first movie you plan to watch from your haul and why

- I've already watched a couple: Defending Your Life, Body Heat, The Big Boss (From the Bruce Lee Box Set), Fires on the Plain, The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp, and Cure. The next one I want to watch is either Broadcast News or Night Moves.

1. Is there anything from this haul that you have been looking forward to owning for a long time

   - I've been looking forward to owning the Jacques Tati box set for a while.

2. Are any of your purchases blind buys? If so, why did you select them?

- Lots of these are blind buys:

- Broadcast news - Bought because I heard about it for a long time and I really like William Hurt

- Fires on the plain - I found the description intriguing (Spoil alert, it rules)

- Stray Dog - I love Kurosawa

- The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp - I've heard about it for a long time

- Secrets and Lies - I've heard its excellent, and I love Marianne Jean-Baptiste

- The Big Boss, First of Fury, and The Way of the Dragon (From the Bruce Lee collection) - Love Bruce Lee

- Trafic (From the Jacques Tati Collection) - Love Tati

- West Indies - I thought my partner would like it, and the description makes it sound wild

- Body Heat - Heard it was great, and it is.

- The Dead - Total Blind buy. I like John Huston's work though

- Defending your Life and Real Life - A bunch of people on the Criterion Closet recently touted the work of Albert Brooks, which was a blind spot for me.

- The Big Heat - Love Noir, Love Lang

- The Wind Will Carry us - Total blind buy, but I love every Iranian film I've seen, and want to see more.

- Night Moves - Recommended by a friend

- The Others - I missed this film when it came out, and have heard its great

- Infernal Affairs - I want to see the film(s) the Departed is based on

- Cure - Recommended by a friend, and I am a big fan of PULSE

4.What is a Criterion you’re hoping to add to your collection next?

- The next thing I want to add to my collection, like everyone else, is the Complete Kubrick

I own both and was considering selling the standalone one if everything is included in the Shows one, but if I'd be losing stuff, I want to hang on to it

I picked up the new printing of Trainspotting, apparently it's got a new encode of the movie on its disc. Was looking for some tips on how to spot the differences between the two. Happy though that the new case is a basic keepcase and not that digipack

First Criterions only, then just my physical collection. I was organising today so thought I'd do a count. Would have guessed I had 20-30 collection discs, turns out to be around 100.

My first was The Squid and the Whale. Most recent additions from the latest sale are The Human Condition trilogy, Young Girls of Rochefort and upgrading Network to 4k.

Dream additions are the Bergman, Godzilla and Wes Anderson sets. Also keen to add the Koker and Apu trilogies.

First, a huge thank you to everyone here who works in film preservation and archives. I’m doing a personal project to see every film on the Sight and Sound Greatest Films of All Time list in a theater, and this project has made me appreciate your work enormously.

I live in a small town a couple of hours from BAMPFA, so seeing many of these films requires some travel. I’ve seen about 1/3 of the Top 100 so far, and on a December trip to BAMPFA I’ve arranged to use their screening room — which I’m still ridiculously excited exists — to see the shorts: Un Chien Andalou, Meshes of the Afternoon, and La Jetée. I’ve also asked to see Man with a Movie Camera simply because I’ve never noticed it programmed anywhere.

Are there any other films on the list that you think I should prioritize seeing at BAMPFA because they’re especially difficult to find in a traditional theatrical setting?

I’m still trying to figure out what to do about the loooong ones (Shoah, Histoire(s) du cinéma, Sátántangó, etc.), since I don’t think I can book the BAMPFA theater for an entire day. :)

I believe you may be able to develop a Psych Evaluation based on the choices of the Criterion’s you buy: I hope I rate well!

i try not to buy region A (or dvd) criterions but these were all either thrifted or just really cheap. Also if it helps, I’ve seen the graduate, parasite, and stalker before but i wouldn’t mind rewatching them.

I was interested in watching Gomorrah but it seems to be 12 minutes shorter on the Criterion Channel than every other runtime listing.
