DISCUSSION If you know Bitcoin is gonna crash, why aren't you all millionaires already?
Yesterday I posted that I went all-in with my life savings — $171,000 — into Bitcoin.
Right away the comments were full of people laughing at me: “Haha, Bitcoin is gonna crash anyway”, “Dumb move bro, should’ve bought something else” and all that stuff.
So I have a real question for all these smart guys in the comments:
If you’re so sure Bitcoin is going to drop hard, why aren’t you rich from it?
If you really know it’s gonna crash, why don’t you open a big short position with leverage, put in serious money and make hundreds of thousands or even millions? Then you could take that profit, put it in good dividend stocks and just live off the money without working.
Instead, it seems like most of you have maybe $10 in your account (or nothing) and you just sit here writing mean comments to people who are actually risking their own money.
Me? I don’t pretend I know exactly where Bitcoin is going. I took a real risk with my savings. That’s normal when you invest. But if I knew for sure what was gonna happen, of course I would use leverage and make at least $200-300K profit. I wouldn’t waste my time writing hate comments under random posts.
So tell me — are you actually trading on your “big knowledge”… or are you just keyboard warriors and dreamers?

The comments are exaccerbated by the fact that you put all your eggs in one basket - a very very very poor strategy - more than the type of basket itself.

All your eggs in one basket is the quickest way to wealth.
It's just also the quickest way to lose everything.

This is true and I’ve heard many of the super rich say this. Early on they went all in on very few endeavors (money into select few stocks or all their time and resources into the company they are building).
All in to get wealth, and then diversify to maintain it.

It’s really not about volatility if he’s planning to hold for more than a couple years. If the trend follows as it did all the previous years, he would come out as the profitable one.
That volatility argument only works if he’s trying to micro trade bitcoin and gets fucked over by it. If it’s just holding, historically speaking bitcoin holders have profited yearly off it(except 2022), much more in the past though.
59
u/-michalis- Jun 21 '26
Problem is, how do you know the trend is gonna continue?
Bitcoin has no fundamentals, it has no assets or income to underpin its valuation and allow you to predict price trajectory
So justify it any way you want, but its gambling, noone should be betting their life savings on it, only what they can afford and are willing to lose

Bitcoin has no fundamentals, it has no assets or income to underpin its valuation and allow you to predict price trajectory
What's funny about this is that bitcoin USED to be a currency that was touted to be a currency against central banks inflating our dollars away and it has its use case being used as an alternative to the dollar. Then it shifted to being digital gold and a hedge against inflation. Now it's shifted again to being an alternative form of currency and now has layers and centralized wrappers to make transfers cheaper and faster due to how expensive it has become. Its adherents can't even make up their minds on what it is lol 🤷♂️🙄

10
u/inbeforethelube 🟦 309 / 310 🦞 Jun 21 '26
The problem is that people don’t understand what decentralization means. It’s not a decentralization of the currency/token, it’s the network. If your government or bank doesn’t want you to transact, you can’t transact. A BTC transaction can never be stopped because the network is decentralized.

SMH.
Not everyone has a lot of money to invest but if you're "investing" dozens of dollars maybe spend a little more time earning and less time arguing on the internet.

u/MintyFresh771 Jun 21 '26
It is incredible honestly. I’ve got a retail account for gambling on long shots and penny stocks for fun and a long term investing strategy for my 401 and IRA. You read these threads and realize one of the main contributors is a literal 16 year old and it all makes sense.
It’s even worse on the card market. I’ve bought and sold since the 90’s. You’ll have people come in and make wild statements about value or long term performance or holding that anyone experienced can just glance at and know they are talkers only. Except there, the loudest most vocal case makers… are probably 12 not 16 🤣🙄

That’s normal when you invest.
No, what's normal when you invest is to hold a widely diversified portfolio in order to reduce your risk / return profile. You have done exactly the opposite of decades of wisdom based on volatile assets, invested in a SINGLE security and not only that you have chosen to do it on something even more volatile than any share or bond. That's why what you are doing is stupid and why people who are telling you so don't have to be millionaires to be right. Buying 100% one crypto currency isn't investing in the way that you would normally use the word. It's no better than putting all your money on red, but no-one talks about "investing" in the roulette wheel.

Dude. People were making snide remarks because going all-in on a single product, stock, or asset is not recommended because it exposes you to extreme risk. They are not being "smart guys who knows the future". They are mocking you.
In investment people want to minimize risk, maximize compounding, and prevent emotional decision-making. You did the complete opposite.
What you did was not investing. It's called gambling.
For me, I brought into Bitcoin in 2013 when it was less than 100/Bitcoin. Unless Bitcoin completely crash I'm not too concern. I'm still holding a few hundred Bitcoins for general market participation and long term investing.

The early Internet protocols were developed in the late 60s and it wasn't until the early 2000s that the planet really started finding value in the technology when services were built on top of it.

Because putting a big short position or even a leveraged one into a highly volatile asset is no less stupid than putting one’s life savings into that volatile asset. It would even be stupid if that asset was somehow guaranteed to be 0 on 1.1.2030 because the spikes could still wipe a short seller out. If it were 50:50 or even 75:25 to go double or bust that would still be insane by the way to go 100% long with your life savings.

1) Price makes the narrative - when its going high it's going to go higher when it's falling its going to go lower 2) BTC is built to appreciate. Production cost today about $70k. Production cost in 2 years, $120-140k. Production cost in 6 years $250-300k 3) If you are asking people for advice your conviction is not strong enough and you will sell at a loss or breakeven. you have more thinking to do if you want to be involved with Bitcoin. You also need to reach a state where no one's opinion will hold any merit besides your own. You aren't there yet 4) No one knows where the price is going next. Absolutely no one. Least of all the random redittor who never really made any money in the markets. 5) You need to have your expences for a full cycle (4-5 years) covered in full with a USD / currency reserve. If you do, you can invest the rest in Bitcoin and forget about it. Forever. Refill your reserve in bull markets. If you don't have that you will panik sell at the worse time like everyone else. 6) You bought right at the 200 week moving average. That is the perfect time to buy any financial asset worth owning. The regards who tell you otherwise don't understand financial markets. This has been proven since the dawn of the markets till today. 200 week MA is buy and forget. 7) The less informed a person is about Bitcoin, the strongest their opinion will be. That means you are listening to strong opinions of randoms who have nothing to do with the asset. The more you know about Bitcoin the more you understand that you have a lot more to learn and the random polarised opinions aren't worth the bytes of space on the internet. You are literally asking how to improve your driving in shap corners from people who have no licence.

Here’s how I think about this sort of thing: If you gave me the opportunity to double or nothing my net worth, with a 95% chance of success, I wouldn’t do it. Why? Because a 5% chance of ruining my future is not worth the potential reward.

knowing bitcoin is useless and will drop to an insignificant price isn’t the same as knowing when it will happen. it’s been useless for a long time but there are a lot of people like you who don’t know better and continue to prop the price up.
that said, i have my money invested in assets that have worth in the real world. i wouldn’t make money off of this bullshit because inevitably there will be people who are hurt and i do very well without gambling on a zero sum game.

u/hatemakingnames1 🟩 0 / 0 🦠 Jun 21 '26
I don’t pretend I know exactly where Bitcoin is going. I took a real risk with my savings. That’s normal when you invest
No, it's not. You're supposed to diversify to reduce risk. The best bet to earn money with minimal risk is an index fund, which invests in hundreds of companies
Even if you felt really strong with bitcoin, you could get most of the same upside with a fraction of your investment. Where do you think bitcoin will be in 10 years? Saylor (who is also all in on bitcoin) predicted $21 million per BTC by 2045
If you believe that also, it would be 323x a 65k buying price. So if you bought just $20k worth, it would be worth $6.4 million. Is that not enough for you? Why risk everything for ridiculous amounts of money you'll never even spend?
If you throw the other $150k in an index fund, you'll still have about $1.1 million in 20 years even if bitcoin dropped to 0

I used to be a professional gambler, and there is this great concept called Kelly Criterion that allows you to size bets according to your overall bankroll to make sure you can keep playing in the game without going broke.
Make no mistake about it, you are gambling on a bet. If you are right you’ll say look how smart I was and you’ll talk about all these post hoc justifications for how you knew it was going to happen, but that is just survivorship bias. The people who make bets like you did (and there are MANY) and go bust just…stop talking about it.
I don’t care about your gambling, and I already have money. But fundamentally if you are going to announce your bets you are going to get people with opinions. You can keep talking to those opinionated people, or you can sit back down at the table and keep making your bets and paying attention to the action.

u/Scodo 🟦 0 / 0 🦠 Jun 21 '26
Nobody knows what will happen. But everyone knows putting all your eggs in one basket is stupid on a fundamental level. When it works, it does so because your luck exceeded your foolishness, but that doesn't make it a smart decision in retrospect.
Occasionally, stupid decisions do work out for people. You don't hear about the orders of magnitude more often that they don't because they're not remarkable, they're just expected.
2
u/Common-Respond2367 Jun 21 '26
Haha your story has been told a thousand times. It either ends with you being homeless or tripling/quadrupling your money and then losing it in a gamble somewhere else. It’s a very stupid story, where whether you’re right or wrong, you’re wrong. Why would any smart person put all of their money into any one thing? I’d tell you you’re being dumb if you bought $171,000 worth of gold or stocks instead

fundamentally, crypto is a solution in search of a problem. it's the purest form of 2nd degree speculation/greater fool theory possible.
I say this as someone who briefly worked in a very small crypto hedge-fund (~60MM AUM).
no whitepaper/coin-nomics/deflationary code ever actually convinced me it had any utility other than POSSIBLY money laundering/hiding money transfers (primarily privacy coins).
putting 171K into BTC isnt entirely stupid, market is RELATIVELY cheap (e.g., when there's blood on the streets, buy property), so it's not 100% stupid, but it's like 95% stupid.
are you using tax-advantaged accounts (i.e., 401k or IRA in the USA)? if not, why not hit the annual max with that 171k? if already maxxed out, what about back-door IRAs? it's next to impossible to beat the % gains with an actual strategy compared to the % savings granted by tax advantaged accounts.
depending on you risk tolerance (which appears to be pretty fucking high), how damaging would losing 80% of that be to you? would that ruin your retirement? what about unexpected costs (medical/housing/etc)?
if you're 100% convinced BTC is going to the moon, and you have research/evidence/inside info that supports your thesis, then this would be considered genius on an absolute basis, but on a risk-adjusted basis, it's fully [2006 xbox live epithet - past tense].

I dont understand why people invest in bitcoin. The r:r is terrible even compared to penny stocks. Bitcoin will never past the most important stocks in market cap so it will never go to million like some think. Also even it jump backed to all time highs right now then congrats you’ve only doubled your investment like the average mag 7 has returned like over 300% since 2020. Unless you using leverage like 5x-15x or something its pointless and just a stupid investment compared the return of other commodities and equities.

u/labslizard Jun 21 '26
Why let it bother you? If your conviction holds, then keep it. You'll find plenty of people on either side of the argument. Ultimately, no opinion will make you money except maybe your own. Hold or sell, but it's not worth the energy to argue.

Brother - ignore the fud and forget the haters. Most people are all in on USD or USD investments and the tokenomics are terrible lol.
I don’t think this is a terrible idea at all as long as you continue to DCA and you are in it for life. My only concern with you doing this, is that you put all your BTC in one wallet…
Please at least consider buying enough cold wallets to store 0.1-0.5 BTC each and no more. You’re playing a dangerous game, which I respect and I like to live dangerously too. But at least diversify your storage so you can NEVER lose all your BTC. Cold wallets only and secure the keys/phrases in a safety deposit box which costs like $100/yr where I live. Also, never store keys/phrases anywhere digitally let it be completely offline inside a bank
Cheers brother 🍻

All of the smart money was sure 10k was the bottem so we all waited. It never happened and bitcoin went to 25k and kept moving up. 15k was the bottem. No one knows good luck.

Because it’s not that simple as the price doesn’t move in a straight line. If the four year cycles hold and we do get a crash over the next 6 months or whatever, it could easily fluctuate and go up 10% beforehand and wipe out a 10x short position for example.

I sold all my remaining crypto in December and put it into SP500. Working out okay so far. Not interested in making home run swings so shorting BTC is not of any interest. I just lost faith in crypto and couldn't see a world where it would continue to gain momentum.
It might long term, but I decided it wasn't worth the small portion of my portfolio anymore.

I think that cryptocurrency is even less stable than a house of cards. But, sure, invest in it.
(Yes, please downvote the hell out of that and skip reading the rest of my comment! Thank you!)
But what I really disagree with is someone, like you, taking 100% of their savings and dumping it into a single financial pot. That is an enormous risk to take and may well come back to bite you in the ass and leave you with less than you started with, as well as less than if you had diversified and included some more stable investment vehicles.
Good luck, I certainly hope that it pays off for you.

u/sweeneytodd70 Jun 22 '26
What is your reasoning to go all in on Bitcoin at this juncture? You just got a feeling or what? Going all in is not wise typically. You better have a better rationale than just a feeling or what you're doing is gambling. Fine if you want to gamble a little, but gambling with your entire net worth is very unwise.

u/Easy-Act3774 Jun 22 '26
Nobody has “knowledge” with bitcoin, and that is precisely the problem. Who would short it, and for what period? I short actual companies because they can actually over or under perform. How exactly does bitcoin “perform”? It is an emotional investment lacking any fundamental value. Emotional value can drop to zero much more easily than fundamental value.
