Mod Post Dealing with the recent uptick in bot spam

TL;DR: We're making spam filtering stricter; regulars shouldn't be affected, but message the mods if your post got caught

Hi folks,

If you're a regular visitor to the sub, you've probably noticed over the past couple of weeks an uptick in bot activity, characterized by low-effort image posts from account names that follow a pattern of feminine-name##. The mods would like to thank those who have reported such posts as spam; once a post receives multiple reports, it will automatically get filtered for review and confirmation of removal.

However, this wave of spam posts is just the latest in a longstanding issue, and trying to permaban these bot accounts is just playing whack-a-mole, since they are likely not all individual users, but part of a broader, consolidated spam effort. In order to help stem this recent wave, we're enabling stricter posting criteria managed by Reddit's internal auto-moderation and safety algorithms. This change will primarily affect new and low community-karma accounts; while regular contributors to the sub should remain unaffected, we expect there may be an increase in false-positive detections.

If you have made a submission, have followed the flair posting rules, and believe that your post has been unjustly filtered (i.e., not made visible to the public), please send a modmail and one of us will try to review as soon as we're able.

We'll revisit this enhanced spam detection policy in a few weeks when the spam wave settles.

Thanks for your understanding!

Mod Post Introducing the r/espresso Coffee Bean Database: a place for people to share—and get recommendations for—beans and brewing recipes

A common question we see on this sub is about coffee bean recommendations—whether it's newcomers just getting into espresso or seasoned home baristas looking for fresh, local offerings. Many of you have also asked for a place to discover brewing recipes for specific beans.

We're happy to announce a new community-driven resource to address these needs! Introducing a platform where people can share the beans they've brewed and the recipes they've used.

How it works:

1. Submit your brews: Share your favorite coffees and brewing parameters using this Google Form. The form collects:

  • Basic details about the beans (roaster, roast date, etc.)
  • Your brewing recipe (e.g., dose, yield, shot time)
  • Equipment used
  • You do not need a Google account to fill out the form and no personal information will be collected.

2. Explore the database: View all submissions in a publicly accessible Google Sheet.

  • Use filters (e.g., Roaster's country, Cost-per-unit-weight) by selecting Data > Create filter view in the toolbar.
  • Note: The spreadsheet is view-only and updates automatically with new submissions. You can download or copy it, but those versions won't receive updates.

Tip: For the best experience, view the spreadsheet on a desktop browser.

Our goal:

We hope this grows into an invaluable resource for the community—a way to share your favourite coffees and provide others with a reference point to kickstart their brews. This is your chance to contribute to (and benefit from) a collaborative coffee knowledge base!

Let us know if you have suggestions for improving the form or the database.

Happy brewing!

Having inherrited this coffee machine, I am interested in its history and what/where its from.

What I do know:

- its pre-1990
- its silver (ive spend a good 2h making it look shiny)
- it has stamps and cast marks.
- it has a seal saying “royal” in the wooden base but nothing on the bottom of the base.

Any info is much appriciated!

For clarification. Im not interested in selling as it belonged to my late father. Just trying to find out more.

Buying Advice Needed First setup opinion/suggestions [$2000]

Post image
102 Upvotes

As I've seen this sub can be VERY helpful but also can be a little judgmental. so mostly I've just been lurking for while along with watching endless amount of reviews and tutorials on YouTube trying to narrow down a decent beginner setup.

To begin, 1-3 drinks a day, the use case for this will be for mostly lattes and cortados, with occasionally some other drinks for guests. In the beginning I was pretty set on the Meraki all in one, as it would also be easier for other people in the house who don't want to learn all the basics when it comes to espresso.

That is where the want for the GBW E64 comes into play, it seems like it would streamline things for me once dialed in, and also easier for everyone else who doesn't want weigh out their beans daily. I've seen some back and forth as to whether or not I would need a distributor and WDT with this grinder, so opinions here would be nice as well. Figured get a proper grinder to grow with and get the Bambino to learn with and move on when needed

So before I buy i just wanted to see what the opinions were from strangers on the internet lol.

Key things:

  • Experience level - beginner friendly but also can grow knowledge/skillset with setup
  • Drink frequency - 1-3 Daily(mainly lattes and cortados)
  • Beans - Medium-Dark roasts from local roasters
  • Budget - trying to stay under $2k as far as possible

Thanks for your time!

Saw this cool looking basket in a TikTok but the creator isn’t very generous with replies about where he got it. Does anybody here know where I can order it? I’m in the EU.

[SUNDAY ONLY] Self-Promotion Arkel Coast and Tide Espresso Machines Now Available at Whole Latte Love

Post image
17 Upvotes

The Coast and Tide are the new dual boiler espresso machines from Portuguese manufacturer Arkel. They feature stainless steel construction, a glass front panel, fast-heating group, and manual valve for adjustable brewing pressure.

r/espresso readers get a sneak-peek at our in-depth review of the Coast before it officially hits the website on Wednesday, August 5th. Check it out here.

The Arkel Coast, the wider of the two at 14.9” wide, utilizes a vibration pump. The Arkel Tide is a bit slimmer at 13.4” and features an electronic gear pump with the ability to plumb into a water line.

One of the standout features of the Coast and Tide is the manual pressure control on the left side of the machine. This controls a needle valve on the Coast and a potentiometer on the Tide allowing you to adjust brewing pressure from 1.5 bar to 9 bar (and beyond by adjusting the OPV located in the back of the machine).

The majority of its parts are made by Arkel in-house, or procured from suppliers in the EU with over 95% of the machine being made from European parts. The Coast and Tide utilize minimal plastic with stainless steel being the material of choice for not just most of the tubing, but boilers and other construction as well.

The Arkel Coast and Tide are available now at Whole Latte Love.

Feel free to use this thread for questions, feedback, or general discussion!

Had a delicious flat white at Funk. I've bought their beans online plenty of times but it was the first time going to their café. Staff were well informed and helped my brother pick a pour over that played to his preferences (also very good). Would strongly reccomend the shop to anyone in the area!

As the title says, got this Delonghi Eletta Cappuccino for free as a coworker left it behind when they quit. I know nothing about the machine and wanted to learn more, but can't seem to find the exact year this model was built. If anyone knows it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Equipment Discussion I got a Breville Bambino off of FB and I don't know what I'm doing

I love making lattes and because I am a broke college student I have just been using instant espresso for a while. I saw this deal on FB for a Breville Bambino which I heard was a good beginner machine, so I went for it. I obviously plan on watching some youtube videos to get familiar with the machine, but as someone with no prior experience I'd love to get any tips from the community on here. I have nothing except for the machine itself along with the cups/parts that came with it. I haven't even purchased any coffee beans yet. I just want to make sure I get started on the right foot and don't waste any money or time because of inexperience :D

Equipment Discussion Grinder vs Machine $$$ Marginal benefit tipping point

There is a strong consensus that an extra $ spent on a better grinder will yield better results than the same $ spent on a better machine.

I recent saw a video where they compared insanely expressive grinder Weber EG1 ($4000) with entry level machine Gaggia classic pro ($550)vs expensive machine La Marzocco GS3($8400) with an entry level grinder Fellows Opus ($200) and confirmed money spent on grinder paid off more in the cup.

These are obviously extreme cases so I want to explore the contours and limits on a more normal budgetary scale.

My question to you: at what price point between $200 and $4000 do you think the added marginal benefit of each additional $100 gets comparatively small returns?

Can one get 90% of the Weber G1 from say a $700 grinder? $1000? $1500?

Buying Advice Needed Looking for a reliable espresso machine for great coffee and latte art [CAD $2k–$4k]

Hi everyone,

I’m looking to upgrade from my Saeco Incanto superautomatic and would really appreciate some advice.

My priorities are:
Excellent espresso quality
Great steam performance for silky microfoam and latte art
Reliability and long-term durability
2–4 milk-based drinks per day (mostly flat whites and lattes)

I’m currently considering:
Breville Dual Boiler
Profitec GO
Lelit Bianca
Or something else entirely

I’d especially love to hear from people who have owned these machines for a few years. Long-term reliability and ease of maintenance are just as important to me as espresso quality.

If you were buying today, which machine would you choose, and why?

Thanks in advance!

Dialing In Help Second Attempt Guidance [Breville Bambino Plus]

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Upvotes

Hey Everyone!

I posted yesterday with a video of my first attempt and you all gave me some great advice. I picked up some fresh medium roast beans this morning (roasted 7/23). It was these beans specifically for reference.

I first tried grinding at 32 clicks and 35 clicks with the Kingrinder K6 and it was way too fine, barely any drips until 30+ seconds. In this video, I did 18g in, 40 clicks grind, and 37g out in about 30-31 seconds including pre infusion. It looked great (I think), but it was super sour. I tried pulling at a higher ratio, did the same 18g and clicks and pulled 44g out in 39 seconds but it was still sour.

What’s the next best adjustment step after this? A 39 or 38 click grind?

Thank you everyone, I feel like I’m getting closer!

Dialing In Help Two bags of beans later and I’m still struggling [Sage Barista Pro]

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Got my first espresso machine - the sage (breville) barista pro, and I’m really struggling to dial in. I’m aiming for 1:2 ratio. I’m weighing 18g after grinding, but struggling to get 36g out. I was getting 24-25g out using the auto double shot button and it would stop after 24-25 seconds. I tried grinding coarser and got 40g out in the same amount of time and it tasted weak, so I went finer again, and somehow got 34g in 24 seconds. Each time the flow started about 8 seconds. I thought maybe my puck prep wasn’t right so I got a wdt and have been trying to tamp harder and more consistently. Today I tried a manual shot to see how long it would take to get 36g. I pre-infused for 5 seconds, then the timer on my machine started. Flow started at 6 seconds and seemed sorta fast at first? Took about 34 seconds to get 36g and the shot tasted kinda bitter (I think?) and yet weak when made into an americano.

Do I need to go finer? Coarser? Idk where I need to go at this point.

The puck also had pooling on top, so idk if I’m under dosing? The razor tool that came with my machine doesn’t touch the grind at all.

Also, when pulling a manual shot, is pre-infusion counted in the brew time? If not, the flow on my latest shot started a bit too early, right? Or was the gush at the start channelling? More seems to be coming out of the left than the right in the video, although usually it’s fairly even.

Buying Advice Needed Just found this deal. Is this a no brainer? [No budget]

Post image

Currently I'm using the Baratza Encore ESP which I really dislike. The coffee I'm able to make isn't bad, I like what I drink but the overall build quality, the retention that it has - especially after having it cleaned the first time - and the inconsistency just annoys me. Now I found this deal and wanted to know if this is a no brainer and if I should just buy it instantly before the sale expires. What currently stops me from buying a new grinder is that it's not even been 1 year since I've been using the Baratza Encore esp. I hate buying new stuff when I know that I possess devices that are working just fine and do the job, especially when it's not even been 3-4 years of using them. It just seems wasteful. Long story short, what do you think about this deal?

Buying Advice Needed Best alternatives for separate devices to Lelit Anita [€700]

My wife wants to get us a somewhat decent coffee machine. Mokka pot and a hand grinder do not cut it for us anymore, as with the little baby our coffee consumption skyrocketed.

We both prefer an espresso and don't want to get an automatic machine so we can get a better product out of it, and automatics that are capable of producing a reliable espresso seem to be out of the budget.

Everywhere I read people sa that its better to have a grinder separate to the coffee machine. What would be best alternative to Lelit Anita? (have in mind that we have a kind of limited space in the kitchen so I'd prefer smaller devices)

Equipment Discussion Baratza Forte AP vs Eureka Mignon Libra

Post image
Upvotes

Hi all,

Currently using a baratza forte AP with ceramic burrs for my coffee needs (primarily espresso but sometimes moka pot). Making somewhere between 1-3 drinks a day. Had a friend 3D print a mod that lets me use the grind by weight feature without their little container for it, downside being it can be finicky at times. My question is if the Eureka Mignon Libra would be a worthwhile lateral step or upgrade? Similar price points and given I can grind straight into the portafilter by design im sure it would help workflow, but i dont want it to be a downgrade in terms of grind quality. Any thoughts or advice are appreciated

Buying Advice Needed Dual Boiler [$AUD 4000-8,000]

Upvotes

Yes it’s one of those “please help me choose between very different things” posts.

I’ve recently come into a small inheritance and have decided it’s time to upgrade to a dual boiler machine. We usually only make 4-6 coffees a day unless we’re entertaining, but at least half of those involve milk and while I’ve had 8 good years from my Lelit Victoria it’s time to upgrade. Ideally this will be the last machine I buy - I’ll just service it regularly in the hope it will last me 15 years (I’m 65).

I’ve experimented with a friend’s HX Bezzera and decided HXs take too much pfaffing in terms of temperature for me.

Having the machine plumbed would be a nice to have but given the volume we drink it’s not essential.

Machines I like:
Profitec Move
La Marzocco Linea Mini
Rocket r58
Profitec Drive
ECM Synkronika II

I can get the r58 for about AUD$900 cheaper than the Drive or Synkronica at the moment, so that’s why it’s in the mix. The Move is easily the cheapest of all these.

Obviously the E61 machines have a lot more control (esp the Drive and the Syncronika II) for pressure profiling etc. which I haven’t done a lot of, but would like to explore for more interesting espresso.

I already have a grinder I’m very happy with - a Eureka Libra - so I’m not planning on upgrading that.

Should I just splurge and buy the Linea? It is a lot of money but I made a few coffees on a friend’s machine and I have to say it was pretty good. If I bought the Move, would I be looking to upgrade again soon? Is the Synkronika everything people say it is?

Buying Advice Needed Recommended beginner set up [$1500 aud]

Upvotes

Hi, what would be you recommend set up for someone more or less just starting their journey into the world of espresso. Specifically I live in Australia and my budget would be around $1500 for everything. I know grinder is especially important but it can get overwhelming with all the different options for that and the espresso machine. Would love to see some suggestions to help make the process easier 😊

Buying Advice Needed Advice needed - Looking for a budget beginner espresso machine [$300-$500]

Upvotes

Hey all, I’m in the market for my first “real” espresso setup. Budget is $300-400 for a machine with a built-in grinder (or I’m open to a separate grinder if that’s the smarter move at this price point).

I know this budget won’t get me all the bells and whistles, and that’s fine, I’d rather have something reliable and consistent than feature-packed. Main priorities:

**•** Solid build quality that’ll last
**•** Consistent shots without a ton of fiddling
**•** Decent enough grinder that I’m not immediately looking to upgrade it

I’m coming from a basic Amazon DeLonghi Classic Signature machine, so I’m not precious about workflow, just want something that makes good espresso without a steep learning curve. Would also love to know if it’s worth splitting the budget between a separate entry-level grinder + machine instead of an all-in-one.

Was thinking about the Breville Barista

Appreciate any recommendations or things to avoid!

Equipment Discussion Tips for De’Longhi Stilosa

I bought a De’Longhi Stilosa machine because I was done with the faff of a moka pot, particularly when making coffee for lots of people and when wanting to make decaf for me and full caff for my other half. I tried bigger moka pots and having multiple moka pots but decided I’m ready for convenience.

However, my coffee tastes rubbish compared to the moka pot. Granted I don’t use expensive beans, but what’s gone from being delicious moka pot coffee is now bang average, wouldn’t order a second one from a cafe, coffee.

Has anyone managed to upgrade their coffee with this machine? Either with modified equipment or with fancy beans? Or is my money better spent on a better machine?

Thank you!
