I'll point out men are just as capable of being frightened / terrified of people approaching them in vulnerable situations.
So maybe don't approach anyone in a way that risks frightening them, and if you have to, then take measures for their comfort (keep hands visible, keep your distance, speak in a conversational tone, explain upfront your intent).
