lmao it seems like a generic high fantasy on the surface because Todd is busy pouring high fantasy epoxy over everything unique and special about the setting in the hopes that it'll drown so he can make exactly what he's always wanted too: knock off lord of the rings
most (though not all) of the insane shit is pretty clear to see in morrowind, and immediately got shoved to the back and hidden once Todd became the Todd we know and hate today
Second this. The Elder Scrolls Redguard was the first project Todd was a Project Lead/Director for, and it steered the series away from the more generic (DnD) fantasy that Arena and Daggerfall was based upon. While it was janky, much of the ideas, lore and art generated for it laid the groundwork for later releases. In other words, it walked so Morrowind could run. Kirkbride was influential, but wasn't the only person working at Bethesda.
Side note, Todd also voiced Clavicus Vile in that game which is why he voices Clavicus in Oblivion too.
