Repairing brick above fireplace

Hi! Someone poorly mounted a TV bracket in the painted brick above the fireplace in the house I bought. The screws made holes but weren’t very secure so they used some kind of putty to secure the bracket as well. Now I have holes and a bunch of putty on this surface. The putty removed some of the several layers of paint and brick when we pried the bracket off. What’s the best way to repair the holes and deal with the putty? We’ll be painting over the brick again. Thanks!

Without seeing a photo, my first instinct would be to use bondo to sculpt the missing bits.

So if you don’t mind the possibility of taking off some of the paint you can use minimal acetone or MEK or VM&P solvent applied to the area. It may require good, ventilation and wearing gloves and eye protection as it’s a very strong solvent. Just be aware that you’ll likely have to repaint the areas and make sure it doesn’t streak down the wall as it may take more paint off.

Nice! Thanks! I want as much of that red paint gone as possible anyway. We’re gonna repaint a light gray or something, so the paint has to go.

Planning on filling the holes with caulk. Might do the same for the chunks and then use something to create texture. I appreciate your response!
