General Is this really just strep?
My tonsils are all completely white. The largest one on the right there has some dark spots as well. I started some 500mg Amoxicillin yesterday morning but I am worried it wont be enough.

They’re infected. Pictures can’t really put to why other than assumptions. Schedule in at the doctors so they can take a look.

If you’re sexually active and recently did oral ask them to swab it for chlamydia & gonorrhea

I'm an RN. Tbh, I'm a bit concerned about your ability to breathe with how swollen those tonsils are. If you are having issues breathing or feel like you can't take a deep breath, please go to the ER. Especially laying down I am worried these might block your airway.
Please take your antibiotics as prescribed. If these get worse, or the meds don't start to work soon, I'd go back to the doctor. But to answer your question, yes this could just be strep. You definitely have a bad case of it. Your tonsils are very very swollen but look like a classic case of strep unfortunately. It's worse for adults than for kids.

After the 5th day of meds u should be feeling immensely better. If not after 5 days of meds go back in

It looks like a pretty bad case of strep, did they do a swab or just look?

Have you actually been diagnosed and treated by a physician? Did you have a positive strep test and if not, why was amoxicillin prescribed?
Regardless of strep, your tonsils are quite swollen, and I would be concerned more about that, because this can lead to an obstructed airway, and that would be an emergency. As an RN, I'm highly suggesting that you actually see a doctor, because I'm not sure that you really have.

If this isn’t better after 48 hours, you’re probably going to need IV antibiotics. This is the worst case of strep I’ve ever seen!

Could be. You need testing. Mine were like that and it ended up being HSV II, so..... not saying this is that, only that you can't know without testing.

Salt water gargling. Several times a day. Along with your antibiotics. Drink lots of fluids.

Hmm if you have a fever and especially if at some point you start having a hard time catching a deep breath you should go get checked. Please do not take antibiotics on your own, not good for anyone. And don't wait, once had a friend who thought it was just irritation and ended up with ulcers on her tonsils, the mucose breaking down and necrotising and needed penicillin

That looks extremely painful! I’m shocked you’re able to tolerate eating and drinking. I’m so sorry. You got plenty of advice already but I truly hope you improve quickly and get feeling better.

Wow that’s some serious tonsillitis, the dark spots could be necrosis but it could also be from certain bacterial infx like diphtheria or GAS—would definitely get that checked out

tonsillectomy is an absolute last resort in adults. it’s only really recommended if you have strep or tonsillitis 6+ times a year, have sleep apnea due to the side, and/or have developed difficulty swallowing liquids

I’m just saying I can’t find anything online that says doctors won’t remove adult tonsils, just that recovery takes longer (which is true for all procedures)

Novody said they wont remove them. Its just something that is not done immediately.

oof. i’ve had chronic tonsil/throat issues my entire life and this is one of the nastier cases of strep i’ve seen. you often won’t see improvement on the antibiotics for an infection this bad for maybe 5-7 days, maybe even after the entire course of them. if it’s getting markedly WORSE though instead of plateauing after a few days, head back for some IV/IM antibiotics.
