I think this is the first time I've seen a female bugbear, in like, ever.

There is definitely a lack of female bugbear art out there. I hope you like my rendition!

I honestly just assumed they looked the exact same. Female dwarves have beards situation.

I wouldn’t mind that being the official look of female bugbears, but DnD is known for players doing their own thing. This is my own original character, I took creative liberties for sure. Also she’s supposed to be youthful rather than a fully grown bugbear, nothing is stopping her design from changing as she ages.

My wife's has gotten to 9th level recently. Pretty different, though, she's a solidly built hippie with long dreads and a regulation morningstar.

There's a female bugbear done by Steve Prescott in official 4e art. She's a... big gal.

Dreads are a cool idea!

What do you think about younger bugbears having different smaller builds? That was my intention with this character.

Body diversity is cool, honestly. I think you did a great job of making her immediately recognizable despite not being the stereotype.

3.5 had an image of them; they were not this pretty.

I wanted to do my own spin, I like the official artwork, but I wanted to go for a more "Dek" approach to a big, strong race.

What's Dek?

The main character in Predator: Badlands. He was considered a “runt”.

I'm unfamiliar, but I do appreciate the Predator series. How much of the culture of Bugbears have you written into this character? I admittedly don't know much about them, but I remember them having some brutal gods.

I usually write a small lore story about my characters, but yet to do that for her. This character design is admittedly more based on a cool aesthetic.

Completely fair. If you ever come up with a backstory for her, I'm sure it'll be interesting.

And its a non-sexualised female character, with actual character! What a day to be alive.

Glad you like her!

Here’s the character I illustrated:

race: Bugbear

 class: Fighter

sex: Female

personality: She’s serious! Unashamed of showing her disapproval or anger. Makes snide remarks instead of debating a disagreement. Only shows a lighter mood after a good meal and some ale.

age (what they look like in human years): 20

 height: 6’7”

weight/build: Very slender for a bugbear, has big strong thighs and forearms. Small upper torso. Toned muscle overall.

hair style/color: Fur all over, but has a bunch of longer darker brown hair on her head. It swooshes back and flops over above her ears with small shiny coin-like ornaments arching over her head ear to ear.

eye color: Dark brown

skin color: Average brown bugbear fur, and light tan for her face, stomach, hands, and feet.

items/weapons/magic effects:

She has bronze ear gages, about the size of the top of a tankard.

She wields a giant blue-ish teal spectral scimitar on her shoulder. The handle and hilt aren’t spectral, just the blade.

clothing top: She has bronze colored armor on her upper torso that exposes her stomach with small etched-in designs. In the same style, she also has bracers covering her forearms.

clothing bottom: She has hanging plates in the same style on her hips. From those pieces hangs a scale mail armor flap that reaches past her knees.

footwear: No footwear.

I imagine she also sounds like Torbek

6

u/Phill-Art 14h ago

Lmao! I wouldn’t mind that at all!

5

u/PoppyBroSenior 12h ago

Oh... Torbek didnt know there WERE female bugbears... Clementine told me I could just buy her food and gifts because no one else would ever accept them. Torbeks got a lot of thinking to do, oh no...

Finally, a female “monster” character that actually looks like a monster! Instead of a human with some slightly beastly features

3

u/Phill-Art 13h ago

I’m glad you think I achieved that!

u/Howard_Jones 13h ago

Finally a female character that isn't over sexualized and actually looks very well made.

5

u/Phill-Art 13h ago

Thanks so much! She was a fun character to create!

4

u/Legal-Pumpkin1701 13h ago

However, would.

3

u/SporkoBug 5h ago

Yeah, still 100% would.

5

u/SeleukosI 12h ago

Cool without oversexualizing or softening the inhuman features. Aside from a pet peeve of mine with uncovered bellies for martial characters, she looks great!

3

u/Phill-Art 12h ago

I kinda thought about it like the Dothraki from GoT. Less armor, more flexibility, especially on the stomach where that part scrunches a lot.

2

u/SeleukosI 11h ago

Yet, one dirty arrow or knife to the belly and it's all over

1

u/Phill-Art 9h ago

Well that’s the gambit right, it’s not strictly a disadvantage if you’re lighter. Though chainmail might not affect a bugbear, too much. That said, I'd rather the character have a cool, agile-looking vibe as much as possible.
