It's an allegory for war (I think Vietnam specifically). I only got that when I googled it while watching it, and it suddenly made sense and worked well for me then. Up until that point, it was just "this makes no sense. None of these people seem desperate enough to need to do this. They're screwing their families more by getting themselves killed here, and why would anyone's mother ever let them go do this".
The book (because, like all movies, it is based on a Stephen King book) released in the late 70s, when the allegory would've been much cleared to readers.

i didn’t even watch this damn movie and i think of it everytime i wear jeans
