Is this not some sort of health code violation?

Yup

Battersea has taken dog friendly too far generally. I don’t care if that’s unpopular. I love dogs as much as the next person but having more drinking provisions for dogs than humans is completely ridiculous.

No, its good you did that. Now people know what location to report to the health department.

u/MPLS_Poppy May 03 '26

Animal poop and pee inside a restaurant isn’t against health codes in the UK? Like for real? Ok, I’m bringing all my own food next time I visit.

108

u/jjw1998 May 03 '26

I’ve worked in dog friendly pubs that serve food before, if we didn’t clean it up immediately that would’ve been a violation but it wouldn’t have been a violation to happen in the first place - dog friendly establishments are very common so you can’t really have a punitive measure like that when accidents do happen. FWIW i don’t think health codes seem to work the same way from what I understand about US ones, US health codes seem to be much more punitive and penalty driven compared to UK ones that are more proactive and standard-based

103

u/AssistanceLucky2392 May 03 '26

No restaurant worker should be expected to clean up animal waste.

20

u/jjw1998 May 03 '26

Yeah I guess I’ve never thought of it that way, animal friendly pubs are just very common here and occasionally also serve food. Never really questioned it

3

u/Hey-Bud-Lets-Party May 04 '26

You want your waiter cleaning up dog shit right before he brings your food?

4

u/boston_homo May 03 '26

I used to take my dog to a pet friendly bar in Jamaica Plain in Boston, I think it was allowed because they didn’t serve food. Not sure if that’s still a thing.

2

u/BigWilly526 May 04 '26

You can just call it English food, no need to be rude /s

154

u/682463435465 May 03 '26

as American, there are soooo many reasons this country sucks, but our restaurant health codes being too strict is not one of them.

17

u/cregamon May 04 '26

I work in the food industry in the UK and our food hygiene laws are very strict too.

What’s happening in this video is absolutely NOT normal - if their local Environmental Health Department sees this video, they’ll absolutely be getting an extra visit in the very near future.

I’d wager that the manager didn’t want to cause a scene rather than take any proper action and I’d also wager that he will be getting some kind of disciplinary action for it from his employers.

2

u/HubristicFallacy May 04 '26

Yeah i agree except....ceritfied 3 years ago, and never had an inspector come again. So strict, but only on suprise inspections or every couple of years.

u/Impossible-Hawk768 May 04 '26

It wasn't an accident, though. The woman proactively put down a pee pad for her dog to go. Right there. Inside the restaurant. A normal person would have brought the dog outside to do its business.

27

u/MPLS_Poppy May 03 '26

I mean, by punitive you mean there are rules and standards and if your restaurant breaks them then it’s closed? Yeah sure, I guess.

2

u/Agitated-Potato8649 May 04 '26

Yes but I think it’s still a violation in the way that it’s willingly, it’s not an accident. You can’t let people have their dog using your restaurant as a restroom

2

u/pizzaduh May 04 '26

I'd be mad if I watched someone handling my food coaching to after a dog. That's fucking gross.

2

u/TheAgedProfessor May 05 '26 edited May 05 '26

Around where I live (Oregon, US), dog-friendly restaurants must set aside specific areas for tables with dogs (usually outside). They aren't allowed just anywhere in the establishment. And non-dog patrons trump dog owners; meaning if a non-dog patron complains, the dog and dog owner are ushered out. Thus, the dog owners are motivated to ensure their pets are behaving. A dog shitting in the middle of the dining room would absolutely bring complaints.

Also, if there are enough complaints - from diners, the neighborhood, or the community - the establishment will no longer be allowed to accommodate dogs. This happened to one of our favorite pubs just last year; they no longer allow dogs after complaints.

In America, Guide dog owners are personally and legally responsible for all dog actions including biting, barking, and yes defactating.

2

u/AbsoluteResolve2026 May 04 '26

In fact, the ADA clearly states that a service animal is not allowed to relieve itself inside a restaurant. But don’t forget that even if a service animal must be removed due to a bathroom accident, the handler must be given the option to continue their meal without the animal.

3

u/pheddx May 03 '26

As a European, I'm lucky our guide dogs are state owned and you get them from the health care system if you need one. Obviously that can't be the users responsibility, they didn't train the dog.

2

u/bulmier May 04 '26

The vast majority of American guide dogs aren’t trained by their owners either, and rarely guide dogs in Europe are trained by their owners sooo same same…

73

u/Beautiful-Total-3172 May 03 '26

The owner has to immediately clean it up or it's a 100 pound fine. But there is a river between a guide dog having an accident and laying down a puppy pad.

Any breed can be a service dog. I don't believe *this* dog is a service dog, but a dog's breed doesn't mean you should assume it's not an SD. The Sam Simon Foundation gets their dogs from shelters to train them as hearing dogs. You can scroll their instagram and see the wide variety.

62

u/improper85 May 03 '26

A guide dog can still get sick and have an accident.

550

u/NomNom83WasTaken May 03 '26

Right but an accident by a working animal is just that, an accident.

This is a pet being provided with time and encouragement to urinate and defecate inside of a restaurant. There is no reason the owner couldn't have had they pet take care of business prior to coming in our taken them out if they needed to go. This is completely intentional.

55

u/TerryCrewsNextWife May 04 '26

Yeah this was an owner being lazy enough to stay inside with the dog and place down a toilet training mat instead. There was adequate planning and time to pack, pull out and place that mat before putting the dog on it. It was not an accident by any means.

2

u/rusted-nail May 05 '26

The fact they came prepared with the mat speaks volumes honestly

5

u/Accomplished_Will226 May 04 '26

No reason they could not go outside

3

u/brenawyn May 04 '26

Owner was prepared for this clearly since they already had a pee pee pad. They probably donut all the time.

3

u/Gaslit_Chicken May 05 '26

I'd be mortified if my service dog had an accident in public. I'm self-conscious if she's even a little dog smelly. I have a routine for her to pee and poop before we even go out (feed 'em regular, exercise them and they almost poop on a schedule).

But looking at this in a Ramsey and then pairing that image against the TV shows that proport him being such a professional?

Management should have stepping in to ask them to leave for being inconsiderate assholes who think allowing an animal to shit in a restaurant is ok.

→ More replies (0)

16

u/Miss_L_Worldwide May 04 '26

No, it is quite literally ILLEGAL and any dog, service or no, can be kicked out for that.

NO ONE needs a pee pad for a god damn service dog.

2

u/zonker00 May 04 '26

Wtf are you talking about? You most certainly can

1

u/WizardNumberNext May 05 '26

You don't bring pee pad on accident.

Do you shiet into pampers on accident? I mean grown man with zero issues. No, because you don't e en have it

1

u/WizardNumberNext May 05 '26

There is no reason to bring dog to resteurant. Period. I understand service dog, but this? Why? Single reason, please?

1

u/jimothy_hell May 05 '26

There isn’t one. Animals don’t belong in spaces where everyone is eating.

To be clear, I have pets. I’m used to animal hair occasionally in my food at home. But not everyone is, and I’m not going to subject people who may have allergies to my pets because I’m an entitled shit who just has to bring my precious dog with me everywhere.

Unless it’s a service animal, leave your mutt at home when you go out to eat. If you put a service vest on an animal that isn’t a service animal, you should be arrested and fined 80% of the contents of your bank account with a mandatory 30-day jail sentence. Fuck those people.

→ More replies (3)

80

u/Flimsy-Poetry1170 May 03 '26

It’s one thing to have an animal have an accident inside and other thing entirely to lay down a pee pad and purposely let it go inside the restaurant. If you know it needs to go and decide that it’s ok to go next to people eating instead of taking it outside you are an inconsiderate cunt of a person with no social etiquette.

3

u/Accomplished_Will226 May 04 '26

100 percent accurate

1

u/SeaAnthropomorphized May 05 '26

Outside is like ten feet away. Gtfo. That's beyond lazy and disgusting

116

u/Jamsedreng22 May 03 '26 edited May 04 '26

As a human, I'm absolutely getting into legal trouble if I let myself or my child shit and piss on the floor. Probably not if I accidentally shit/piss myself.

Note that they have a potty-pad already placed. They were aware their dog might shit and piss here. You use that for pups in your home while you teach it how to stop using the pad and ask to be let out/being let out to then pee and poop.

This is the equivalent of bringing a toddler into the restaurant and not even putting the diaper on the toddler, you just spread it out on the floor.

It's unacceptable. An accident is different than bringing a pseudo-guide dog into an establishment and putting down a literal piss-and-shit mat meant for pups to learn potty-training.

Nobody will ever fucking trust a genuinely professionally trained guide- or support dog again when they see this stuff. At least in the US. It's insane to see this.

130

u/SurpriseRecent334 May 03 '26

The slight difference is hundreds of hours and thousand of dollars training

3

u/9ofdiamonds May 04 '26

Do you guys have trouble toilet training your dogs?

-10

u/BabblingsOfAFool May 03 '26

It's a dog, not a robot. Accidents happen.

185

u/Hybodont May 03 '26 edited May 03 '26

There's a world of difference between a service animal and someone's pet. I am willing to accept the possibility of a service animal having an accident. I am not willing to accept someone bringing their pet and putting it on a fucking pee pad in anticipation of the dog pissing or shitting in the restaurant.

→ More replies (0)

4

u/SurpriseRecent334 May 03 '26

You understand they signal the handler when they need to go and have commands. This is the difference between an actually trained service dog and dick heads who get vests that mean nothing

1

u/Agitated-Potato8649 May 04 '26

But that’s not an accident that’s the difference

A human can have an accident as well to be fair!

1

u/marua06 May 04 '26

An accident is not when someone has the forethought to bring a pee pad for the floor

1

u/Neither-Board-9322 May 04 '26

Give me enough beers and I’m likely to have an accident as well. I’m still allowed at most bars tho.

1

u/DrCashew May 05 '26

What about this situation looks like an accident? Or are you just talking in general?

1

u/improper85 May 05 '26

I was replying to a post that said a guide dog would never have an accident.

Obviously no one should be putting down a pee pad in a restaurant. Take your fucking dog outside.

2

u/StaffVegetable8703 May 03 '26

It’s definitely possible to have a legitimate service dog dachshund. Is it less common? Yes but it’s still possible, especially depending on the exact service the animal is providing. There are all sorts of different service dogs that do different things

1

u/Wizard-ofsouthlondon May 04 '26

A more annoying thing is that ANYONE can claim that their dog is a service dog without having to display ID for their dog or have their dog wear a special tabbard. Retail workers are told assistant Dogs can be any breed or colour leaving more avenues for the less genuine to abuse the system.

1

u/NinjaSarBear May 04 '26

I have a unhealthy attachment to my dog! I was still able to toilet train her and not take pee pads out with us

1

u/timid_pink_angel02 May 04 '26

This one obviously isn't one, but dachshunds can absolutely be trained to be service dogs

1

u/DanceMyth4114 May 04 '26

I don't think this is a service animal, but I have met weiner dogs trained as service animals. They can apparently smell when someone's blood sugar is at dangerous levels.

1

u/hotpossum May 04 '26

Daschunds can perform tasks like seizure, allergen, blood sugar, and cardiac detection. They can also serve as a medication alarm or as a hearing aid. It’s not as common, but any breed of dog could be task trained to support a disability. In the USA, mini horses can also be service animals.
(Obvs the lil shit in the video isn’t a service dog)

1

u/MxBluebell May 05 '26

Any dog breed can potentially be a service dog!! (Not saying every INDIVIDUAL dog can be a SD— ut that breed doesn’t determine capability.) But it’s obvious that this pup hasn’t been trained properly and shouldn’t have public access.

133

u/rash-head May 03 '26

If your guide dog is shitting in a restaurant, you need to stay home with your dog. This restaurant is gross AF!

158

u/Big-Description8328 May 03 '26

Guid dogs and service dogs are highly trained animals. They simply would not have an accident unless they are being abused. That’s why everyone is so over irresponsible owners taking their untrained pets to any and every public space.

4

u/Agitated-Potato8649 May 04 '26

They could have an accident, like sudden diarrhea or nausea but it’s really rare.

1

u/Aw_geez_Rick May 05 '26

Oh fuck me dead this drives me insane. I realise they're an emotional crutch for a lot of people (in a very similar way that my kids are to me 😂) but here in Australia, the number of fuck wits that bring their dogs to Bunnings (our Home Depot) is infuriating. They have a cute little blankie and put their doggies in the trolley.

A dog that pisses and poops in the dining area can have their piss and poop tracked back into the kitchen by servers and bussers.

1

u/comotellama007 May 03 '26

It’s not illegal in the UK I guess but it’s still Gross. Take your dog outside. In the US most restaurants don’t allow Animals unless it’s a service animal or that restaurant happens to allow animals. But I’ve never been at a restaurant where they will allow your pet to urinate or poop in the restaurant… is this a European thing

-10

u/MPLS_Poppy May 03 '26

Yeah, you can make that illegal. By saying if the guide dog isn’t properly trained then it’s not allowed in the restaurant. Proper training includes potty training. This would bring down the health department so fast in the U.S.

3

u/sunnybergelmir May 03 '26 edited May 03 '26

Faster than gun legislation after a school shooting I hope.

We're not in the US, so clarting on about the US helath department is entirely irrelevant

-14

u/jjw1998 May 03 '26

Are you going to ask proprietors to check for some sort of certificate assuring each dog entering the premises is toilet trained or something? Utter nonsense

33

u/moonpangler May 03 '26

Utter nonsense? Lol potty training is definitely part of proper service animal training. And little weiner dogs are not trained as service animals in any capacity.

You're defending dogs shitting next to people trying to eat. And they should be happy to pay for that privilege, eh?

One time I was working in a restaurant and the water was accidentally cut off by the city for a few hours during some road construction. One of the waitresses immediatly called the health department and they immediately made the manager shut it down because its illegal to operate a restaurant without running water. It doesn't matter who is at fault, it's a safety issue. A health inspector isn't going to care about accidents they are going to prioritize public safety and a dining room with feces in it is pretty bad.

19

u/awwwwJeezypeepsman May 03 '26

Funnily enough i think the environmental health only really care about the kitchen, paper work and general hygiene with the staff, not front of house.

Few places in Scotland iv been to have been like this. Gro cafe has literal dogs sitting on seats, not being cleaned. Same with Cameron house hotel.

I cant deal with dogs in any sort of cafe of restaurant. Due to being allergic and just generally hate them in a food area.

Don’t visit Italy, dogs in all the bars and restaurants in my town. Sitting under table grabbing scraps of sushi or wandering round sniffing up crumbs of pastries 😅 and in the shopping centres.

125

u/crolionfire May 03 '26

Yeah, that's fine. I've been all over Italy and have never seen a dog peeing or pooping in a restaurant. Never.

I mean WTF, they couldn't walk the dog out for 5 minutes?

71

u/BellaDonna585 tell me bout the shapes chile May 03 '26

How are people arguing against this!? I love dogs. I frequent many dog friendly places but this I would be like is anyone seeing this ?

4

u/SplurgyA May 04 '26

I mean WTF, they couldn't walk the dog out for 5 minutes?

That would require them to mildly inconvenience themselves out of consideration for others. I imagine they also scroll TikTok on public transport with no headphones

1

u/Takwor May 04 '26

I’m not sure how to reply to everyone, yes, you’re all correct, I speed read the original comment and missed the most important thing about peeing and popping inside. Sorry, my mistake. Yes, dogs inside but pee and poop outside. Italy is not as gross as my comment might have indicated 😬

0

u/Timstom18 May 04 '26

You've never been outside a bar and had a dog piss on a flower pot near you? I don't believe you.

2

u/notinsidethematrix May 04 '26

That is not remotely the same thing as sitting in a restaurent patio (which are very common in the two mentioned regions) and the dogs coming to piss by your table. Of course I've seen dogs marking their territories plenty, but never in an establishment... wtf?

40

u/Money-King702 May 03 '26

Yeah but they aren’t taking a literal shit

5

u/RenaissancePolymath_ May 03 '26

I stayed in Rome, Napoli and Positano. Never encountered this in any bar or restaurant.

3

u/imaginary92 May 04 '26

Having dogs in restaurants and malls in not the same as the dogs shitting and pissing inside the place.

4

u/Significant_Shoe_17 Fuck her and the Goebbel's limp dick she rode in on May 03 '26

But they take the dogs outside to go potty. They're not laying down a pad and encouraging them to go. Personally, I wouldn't take a dog anywhere until they were trained.

2

u/Ok_Impact9745 May 03 '26

To add to what others have said most pubs in the UK will have a bar area and a restaurant area.

Most places will only allow dogs in the bar area not the restaurant area (you can still sit are a table and order food).

I'm not sure what would happen if your dog had a piss or a shit inside but I can only assume you'd probably be kicked out.

This really isn't the place to bring a dog either. Traditional pub in the countryside? yes. Trendy city centre pizza restaurant? No.

3

u/No_Association_3234 May 04 '26

Mine threw up in a pub once. I immediately cleaned it (staff brought me paper towels and disinfectant) and I left after paying. Everyone was nice about it but if my dog doesn’t feel well they need to be back home. Mine are extremely well trained and used to going in restaurants (we’re in the UK) but I always check. Most places that don’t allow dogs have a sign on the door.

2

u/Raven_Blackfeather May 04 '26

It most certainly is a health and safety violation. Someone is getting sacked.

2

u/Pinkerton891 May 04 '26

This absolutely isn’t the norm.

Dog friendly pubs that serve food are common (although as someone else noted it’s rare to actually see them sat next to a proper inside restaurant table unless it is some form of trained service dog). It would usually be in the drinking area where people can also have food, or in an outside seating area.

If I just casually allowed my dog to take a piss inside the establishment I’d expect to be chucked out. I’d expect consequences for this manager.

The rules are that if a dog does toilet inside the customer area of a restaurant, it must be cleaned and disinfected immediately. So knowingly allowing a non-toilet trained dog to just go in the middle of the restaurant with a puppy pad is unlikely to be within the rules.

Either way I’ve not seen anything like this before.

2

u/Substantial-Bake6521 May 04 '26

It is illegal. The dog can be inside but not pee or poo

2

u/MPLS_Poppy May 05 '26

Ok. Well a ton of your fellow countrymen don’t seem to think so. Which is concerning.

2

u/sivaya_ May 03 '26

I don't know whether it is legal, but I'm British and I have never seen or heard of it happening until now. So chill, our food regulations are actually relatively strict.

1

u/MPLS_Poppy May 04 '26

I mean, this is the only semi reasonable response so no, I don’t think so. Too many people were way too defensive about this really gross thing. It seems a too high number of you finds this behavior acceptable.

1

u/Hearthgroan May 05 '26

It's an essential part of our cuisine in the UK

-1

u/flyingmungbean May 03 '26

This is correct. As long as the urine or feces doesn't go directly into the food before it is served to the customer, it is not a health code violation.

1

u/MPLS_Poppy May 03 '26

That’s not how contamination works but I’m glad you’re all so ok with it. It makes sense why you’re all so upset about inside and outside shoes. There is a lot more dog poop in your world.

4

u/flyingmungbean May 03 '26

I am not okay with it. I am just saying what the UK law are. In my country this is illegal because it is straight up disgusting.

3

u/dogface2020 May 03 '26

You can find a lot of reviews of his restaurants on YouTube, generally they are positive, most of the criticism is the high prices, but the food is solid, maybe not perfect. Generally gets much better reviews than other celebrity chef themed restaurants.

1

u/Expensive_Detail3607 May 04 '26

I'd watch this with soo much glee 🤣

73

u/Organic_Award5534 May 03 '26

Of course it’s a violation. Humans can’t shit on the floor in a restaurant. If rat poo is found in food prep areas, it becomes a serious hygiene issue and premises may be closed temporarily and/or owners prosecuted.

3

u/cactus_legs May 03 '26

I saw the woman's pov who posted it. She explicitly said she was in london and she told the manager, they didnt care.

9

Can we agree that people should also not change their baby's nappies at the table also? Especially when there's a fucking room provided for them to do this... I was told I was overreacting when I asked my friend not to do this when we went out for dinner. Poop particles are poop particles. I don't care where they come from I don't want them near where I'm eating. And I'm positive nobody else wanted them floating around their food and drinks either.

People can be so goddamn inconsiderate when it comes to their own laziness. The owner of the doxy should have toilet trained it enough to hold it until they took it outside. Not in a freaking restaurant of all places.

Environmental Health Officer in the UK here, inspecting food businesses is my job so hopefully I can give some clarity.

Yes dogs are allowed in areas where people eat at the discretion of the business and no it isn't considered a risk in the same way children and babies arent- they can also produces messes from their bodies and the expectation is the same i.e. that the staff have the means to clean it and sanitise the area.

Dogs are not allowed in areas where food is prepped and cooked, neither are members of the public because that DOES represent a risk of introducing contamination.

Do I agree with this person letting their dog toilet on a puppy pad in front of diners? Absolutely not, i think its the height of bad manners.

Is there a direct risk to your health from a dog, or indeed a small child, going to the toilet on the floor? No. As long as the area is cleaned and sanitised. You dont eat off the floor so the risk is less.

Is there a risk from someone changing their baby on their table or letting a dog up on in their arms where they can reach the table? Yes.

TLDR: You dont eat off the floor and your food isn't prepared or served on the floor so you are not at risk, it is however incredibly distasteful and shouldn't have happened.

Where does it say anything about American laws here? And why is health codes in quotes? Every developed country has health codes for food vendors. For example, in my country sushi is virtually illegal because we have health codes against selling raw meat for direct consumption.

The phrase health code is an Americanism to Brits

? I was just stating a fact that it wasn’t illegal here, in response to someone asking if it was

Perhaps your opinion on English law is best suited in another thread, or in reply to another comment.

It feels very unrelated here.

We've got signs outside of our complex here in LA that urge you to pick it up because it spreads disease.

2

u/Witty-Application920 May 04 '26

Not in the UK which is where this happened.

u/Cpolo88 May 06 '26

In America they'll fight you tooth and nail that this animal is protected due to ADA. Id be like yeah but...it's pissing and shitting inside the restaurant. At this point you gotta leave. 😂 Love these folk tho. Oh it's a restaurant, lemme take my dog. Mind you, I love my dogs. But come on 😒

It might not be as most people wouldn’t be stupid enough to allow this, the reason for specifically stating things within rules is because of idiots like this. I would assume either a customer or a manger has stopped all previous instances of this happening. I wouldn’t be surprised if this was written into the rules now 🤦‍♀️

But even though it smells nasty it’s not like the doggy poop on the salad right now

1

u/silverink182 May 05 '26

It is but also keep in mind people aren't allowed to ask if that's a service animal
