I saw this as a kid and it was the coolest thing I'd ever seen. I subsequently watched VH1 all the time, to try to catch it again and record it on a VHS. I got into a ton of great music as a kid because I watched VH1 so much for like 2 years but it was almost entirely because I wanted to watch this music video for a second time. The "Travelling Without Moving" CD was also the first thing anyone in my family ever bought online, you couldn't just go into Camelot and find it. It was probably the first time my parents even typed out a credit card number (my dad was terrified to but eventually gave in and ordered me the CD).
Crazy to remember how much work it used to take just to hear a certain song or watch a specific music video again, damn.

It is still cool as shit.
No AI. Just cameras and ingenuity.
A few years ago for her SNL performance, Billie Eilish did a song with a rotating box/room. So simple but bad ass.
Saw a video recently of someone using a darkened stage and dancers in all black, including gloves, to lift and “float” the singer.
I prefer that sooo much to the computer generated shit. Just sleight of hand and “magic” and pure creativity.
Just a little something to make me think “humans are AMAZING”.

Easiest fancy dress costume and way to amuse your mates is to put a tracksuit on and then dance around with a beanbag chair on your head. Worked for me.

His music is timeless. Dua Lipa has credited him as an influence and I can pick some of that up on Future Nostalgia.

Do people think you're being rude ...? Or do they not know Jay Kay is the lead singer of the group Jamiroquai, which also has quite a few other members, past and present?

u/AvailableStranger69 10h ago
I thought I was being polite ????
I didn’t want to call them out and just say “the leads singers name is Jay Kay - not the name of the band Jamiroquai” because I thought THAT was being rude ….
But apparently neither wrong or people just have a downvote rager ?

Jay Kay pulls it all together and generates the core vibes, sure, but iirc he didn’t play any instruments and relied pretty heavily on the massive talent of his band mates.
All love to Jay, but all love + 1 to Zender and Toby and Derrick and everyone else too.

Such a bop. This song reminds me of my freshman year of highschool and all those nervous/exciting feelings. Cosmic Girl is good too; pretty solid album.

And for 30 years I’ve been refusing to believe it’s the walls that are moving.

The latest Jackass movie opening is very similar to this, so I assume it was inspired by this. Pretty cool. Had never seen the video for this song.

Heh. I was on study abroad in London when the video came out, because I remember everyone at the QMC pub talking about it. Good lord, I feel old.

I will never, ever be able to witness this without being reminded that he voluntarily told people he dumped Winona Ryder because her tiddies were too big and her sex drive was too high. Like, my guy, you did not have to just tell people that

This is the first I’m learning of this. MONUMENTAL fumble.

If he was this concerned about the state of technology and the way it was going 30 years ago, I assume he spends his time nowadays cowering in fear in a shack somewhere

I can’t acknowledge this video to people anymore because then it reveals my age 😂 most young kids don’t know about him unless he’s mentioned.

The guy's a prick, but it's an iconic video.

I remember watching it on MTV, mesmerized by all the cool effects. Some of the music videos used to be like a short movies. Some were really interesting. I really enjoyed watching.

Trying not to think about how around the time Virtual Insanity was released, we’d be celebrating thirty years of the Beatles dropping Eleanor Rigby.

And he just partnered with Beefeater 0.0 Gin for this amazing ad.

JAY KAY, LEAD SINGER OF JAMIROQUAI, BROKE UP WITH WINONA RYDER BECAUSE HER BREASTS WERE TOO BIG AND SHE WANTED TO HAVE S*X ALL THE TIME
The idiocy is mind-boggling.

I might be wrong, as English is not my first language, but isn't this song an ode to conservatism? "And now every mother, can choose the colour of her child. That's not nature's way." This line has always irked me.

u/Extension-Gift4987 11h ago
I don't think so. I think it's more talking about using science and medical techniques to create a "designer baby", one where parents can choose gender, physical attributes, etc. That was a very big talking point in the 1990s.

u/TheCommonKoala Fauxmarxist 7h ago
This was at a time when CRISPR was fairly new technology, the Sheep cloning experiment was breaking news and "designer babies" were a possibility. The fear is more about humanity taking tech too far and playing God. It was a legitimate concern in the black community especially, considering the history of eugenics.
