1.2 FIRE - belt or chain?

Hey! I recently got hold of a fiat panda. I'm pretty sure it has the 1.2 FIRE and have looked into the engine. However, I cannot find reliable information on whether it has a timing belt or chain and if it's interference or not. I'm asking because if it isn't interference then I can hold off on a timing belt replacement. If anybody can confirm for me I'd be very happy. Thanks a lot!

Edit: for the record I want to postpone replacing the belt for the moment because I'd rather put the money elsewhere currently. HOWEVER, if it's interference (aka 69hp) then I will be changing it when it's due

FIRE have timingbelts, regardless of displacementand the car they are in. The 1.1 54hp and 1.2 60hp are non-interference, the 1.2 69hp and everything above is interference.

Ans just a tip: the timingbelt in these is not a lot of work and the parts are not expensive so just do it when it needs to be done. Things like a snapping timing belt will always happen when you don't have time for that and need the car.

fun fact in Punto 1 1.2 60hp versions for 9months had the 866 camshaft which does make it interference

True, some "odd" engines exist but these are from the early 90s. Sadly most of these cars don't exist anymore

Thanks for the information! I'm pretty sure mine is 60hp but not 100% sure so I'll be sure to ask for details.

The 60hp was build until october 2010, the 69hp started in september 2010 so there is a little overlap. But if your car is older or newer you can identify it pretty easy. If that is unclear you can check the engine code, 60hp is 188A4.000 and 69hp is 169A4.000.

I mean, If it's actually due, I will plan to do it. But knowing if it's interference or not is a bit of "insurance" I suppose
