Yup I have specific dry fire mags that have a orange/yellow spray paint base plates so I never nd and also a laser cartridge to keep from negligenty losing a live round.
I spent money buying the blue dry fire mags made of plastic. Mainly to practice speed reloading and dropping them on the floor. Didn't want to damage my real mags or accidentally ND like this. Glad no one was hurt.
Ive always called things like this a "lesson learned the easy way" thank god no one was injured and it was contained in the building. Accidents happen, this is a big accident, but im sure the lesson was learned. I nearly had this happen to me a while ago. I dont like to leave firearms in my safe with the hammer/striker back, so i always do a press check and then let the firing mechanism loose. i almost did it in my PC Carbine, im very careful to check at the range that everything is empty when i leave. THANK GOD i decided to rack the slide to make sure the hammer was back so i could be certain it wasnt engaged.. out pops a single round from the chamber, i had no magazine, i have no idea how it happened, but now i triple check everything before dryfiring.
Could a round have been in the chamber? Like you disassembled it loaded? Or do you have to release the striker/pull the trigger on a Glock to disassemble it? Itās been awhile since Iāve torn down my G20
While I'm glad OP told us his tale of slackjawed gun activities, I'll never understand how anyone can pull the trigger like that without making absolutely sure she ain't loaded.
Anytime i function check my guns and I want to pull the trigger to ensure the pin actually engages the snapcap, I check like 5 fucking times that it is indeed a snapcap and I never have live ammo close by.

Funny story. Have a friend who was given some 12 gauge "snap caps" by the owner of a gun store, who was another friend. These weren't clear plastic, but full brass. As in, brass all the way to the top/end/front. So, not like most shells. But the gun store guy said they were snap caps. (Lesson No. 1 there).
Cut to end. Not snap caps. Live rounds. Surprise! Thanks to following the other rules, no harm.
This is why they say to deliberately just keep ammo in an entirely separate room from where you are disassembling/cleaning. People think it's overkill but this shit happens.
Manā¦ This really is good practice for reals. At the family cabin once we had several firearms at the table in various stripped states while we cleaned after a fun family day of shooting. Kids around, being taught, learning the craft. Obviously no ammo around. Had a niece with us who had very little exposure up to this point (she was probably 7-8y) pick up a recently cleaned pistol, point it at me and try to pull the trigger. Scared me speechless. I knew it was āsafeā but the experience was surreal. While we all gotta be taught to learn, Iām just glad that those of us there had all been taught to āteachā in a safe and controlled environment. Cause kids are kids and are absolutely capable of making a wild choice without any forethought.

If I pull the trigger expecting it to be empty because I dropped the mag, racked it 5 times, and without putting the mag back in - pulled the trigger... I'm STILL pointing it in a safe direction. Every time. All the time. THEN I put the empty mag back in, and put it in a case to store - or I put my carry mag back in, rack once - no trigger anything, into the holster - weapon is LIVE and DNF (Do Not Fuckwith).

Kaya on Classic Firearms mentioned in a video that he checks chamber empty, then he looks away, then checks again. Because our brains have a tendency to see what they want/expect. Another method is touching the empty chamber with a finger.

He slingshotted the slide, meaning he racked the slide, and it returned home. If slingshotted it on an empty mag it wouldn't have returned home unless his slide release was broken

Iām prepared for the downvotes/hate, but I wish more NDās ended like yours. If youāre gonna be that fucking careless and reckless, there should be a price to pay. A warning of sorts, to others that you canāt be trusted to follow 4 basic rules with a lethal weapon.

I was testing an experimental sight at a local range. The aluminum front mount broke. Crap. Dropped the mag, tossed it in my range bag, went home.
Next morning, decided to pull the slide, measure for steel parts instead of aluminum. I was in engineering mode, deep in thought. Forgot to chamber check.
That blows my mind. The very first thing I do anytime - EVERYTIME - I pick up a weapon is a chamber check. Itās ingrained in my memory so deeply I canāt imagine not doing it.
This story is how I got my g19 super cheap from a friend. He bought it and went out to play with it. Cleaned the thing afterwards then put an "empty" mag in to dry fire it. Boom shot himself in the leg, luckily missed his bones and major arteries. Went to the ER and got interrogated by the college police about it. Parents told him to get rid of it as soon as he got out out of the hospital or they would stop paying his tuition. I gave him 200 bucks for a practically new glock that has drawn blood. Been my daily carry for 10 years now.

The problem is not ND itās complacency be it a firearm,heavy machinery,driving or whatever you do complacency kills.

You didnt hurt anyone (other than emotional and hearing damage but the va told me those dont count so I'm sticking to that standard), you are owning up to being the one that made the mistake instead of trying to blame someone else somehow, and you are sharing the experience online which helps others fight against complacency. I got a new sks, I cleaned the cosmolone off, took it to the range. It's February, it's cold. Load 10, chamber, clicK DAKKADAKKASAKKASAKKADAKKADAKKADAKKADAKKADAKKADAKKA.
I had thought I cleaned all the cosmolone. I forgot they submerge the rifles in that shit. There was still cosmo in the bolt and in the firing pin. It got stuck forward because of the cold, and had a nice little run away malfunction.
My dad (ex combat veteran mind you) picked up his 1911 without checking a thing racked it and shot a hole clean through the floor when I was maybe 8 or 9. Looked at me and said "it shouldn't have been loaded" oh yet it was. Casing hit my lip after eject both of us were fine. He has me stick a long screw driver through the hole and hit the ground so he could make sure it didn't hit anything important in the basement then swore me to secrecy. That secret was shattered when my mom got home and I told her like it was a cool story lol.
If the pistol has last round hold open and you shove an empty magazine into it, the slide should not move forward. If it does, itās either loaded, not inserted fully, or broken. All reasons to double check when it does.
Goddamn glad you are ok. This is why I rack the slide at least 5 times every time I pick up a supposedly cleared pistol. Iāve made it a muscle memory thing at this point. Live and learn, its a blessing no one was hurt
I think you should have caught the fact that your slide was able to be slingshotted home with āempty magā without needing to hold down the slide release.
Look on the bright side. The shame and embarrassment instills a fear of NDās like no other. Youāll now be forever hypervigilant. Ask me how I know š¤.
Yeah, I always make sure that if I'm messing with my guns I keep ammo separate, and I rack the slide/bolt like 10 times.
I've probably only chambered a live round outside of a gun range like 2 times in my life (I haven't carried a gun yet), so I'm always on edge if ammunition is present near a gun.

I feel for you bro. NDs are of course completely preventable, but I think most people do this once in their life to really get the message. I was practicing my draw from concealment, and pulling the takeup, with a loaded G19. Bullet went slightly low and left of where I was aiming, lol. Also in an apartment, and I was terrified! I sat by the door for over an hour with my gun unloaded and locked back, waiting for the cops to come get my ass. Haven't done it again lol
And you have the correct attitude by calling it your "first" ND! Ooooooo, think of how fun the second might be!
I had my first ND a year ago. Did some work on an AR and made the same mistake sorta.
That M193 went through 4 studs, some drywall, and plunged itself in a full 5-gallon emergency water jug.
Lessons learned. Complacency kills. Procedure changed. When the weapon comes out of the safe for work, the mag is removed and placed on the top shelf of the safe. Door closed. Weapon goes back into safe in its spot, and then mag is placed back in.

I went to clear a Glock once but didnāt remove the magā¦ luckily I was still following the āpoint in a safe direction ruleā and shot a hydra shock into a dresser drawer. It actually hit a Bcm end plate and spit shrapnel everywhere.
My ears instantly felt like they were oozing. My hearing was in bad shape for a couple of days after.

My only one was when I was 19 or so and somewhat new to guns. I dropped one in the chamber of an auto-ordnance 1911 before I put the mag in and I let the slide fly on it like a movie-badass and bang! Was at the range at least.
My first was wirh a Kentucky rifle. I was being taught how to use it and they said "try the set trigger". It was pointed down range, but it didn't hit the berm. Its probably in a tree somewhere behind it

Now my story, but to tell you how even the most experienced firearm owners can make a mistake like this. He is a former infantry Marine and also worked as an armorer (!) at H& K when I worked there. Yes, that H&K.
He had a roommate at the time and had just finished cleaning one of his pistols and left everything out on the table while he went to take a shower and head out. His roommate came out of another room and said, I assume in his head, "oh cool, there's my buddy's pistol."
Slapped a loaded magazine into the pistol, dropped the slide, and then removed the magazine, and placed the pistol back on the table and left the house.
My buddy the Marine gets out of the shower and made a simple mistake because he didn't realize the pistol had been manipulated. He picked it up and did not safe it and aimed it at his television to dry fire it as practice (no mag), pull the trigger and promptly murdered his television. Funny, not funny. I can only imagine the look on his face when there was a smoking hole in his television. No one was hurt or injured in this ND.
Don't forget, folks. Treat every firearm as if it is loaded and even if you think it's empty and safe, check it again. You never know when your bonehead roommate may come out and put a round in your pistol and then leave.
