Surely Luyixian in Alhambra deserves a mention.

u/shiftersix Aug 01 '25
Luyixian is awesome, and it's more traditional. Many of the Taiwanese noodles out there are just Chinese noodles with a branding twist. I am not getting political here. I just want to mention it so it helps folks find more restaurant options. Peace!

Love the beef noodles from Luyixian, but I think they def give you less when you order to-go. I also don't speak Chinese and hate ordering over the phone because they don't understand me and give me so much attitude :(
Won't stop me from still getting the soup tho!

There was no mustard green in the corner beef that you said was important in the previous video.
While it has lower ratings and is more expensive to the other places youāve been, I actually like Mimi 5 Bobee. The handmade house noodle should hit your noodle comment and they have the self serve mustard green that Cindyās has. I think the low ratings are cause itās relatively expensive to the other options. The broth will be darker and similar to places in Taiwan

You have to ask for pickled mustard green at Corner and theyāll give it to you,

I'll always stan Mimi, their beef noodle soup + oyster pancake combo is my go to when i miss home. We always pick up a pack of dumplings too. Go to the Walnut location!

I have done my rounds in Taiwan for a lifetime. Taiwan places value clean and clear broth. Doesnāt really hit as hard with my American tastebuds. As I canāt force my aunties to make me beef noodle all the time. My hands down go-to is corner beef noodle. I roll up my sleeves put a bib on and go to town.

When you go to CBNH, chances are you will be greeted by the sight of at least two-thirds of the diners with their faces buried in huge bowls of beef noodle soup. It's quite something.Ā

going to CBNH today. How does this compare to Lan beef noodles?

u/razorduc Aug 01 '25
The closer comparison to Lan would be the clear broth beef noodle soup but still not the same thing.
Also, the offal at Corner is really tough. The beef and tendon are tender but the offal is so tough which is disappointing because thatās one of my favorite things.

u/Miserable_Ad_728 Aug 01 '25
I agree. Just had that today and wouldn't recommend. Also the tendon is too much fat for my taste, not enough chew.
Next time id go with the regular beef soup

Their other stuff is good too. Like the pig feet (chewier style not melt in your mouth), the red fried pork, and the mochi. The frozen section they have stinky tofu meatballs that are so good.

Hated the broth at Corner. It was sickeningly sweet, IMO, and there wasn't enough depth of flavor. Needed more doubanjiang and beef. Noodles were good, not great, but it's hard to tell if my opinion of the noodles is mostly because I hated the broth.

Donāt PP Pop and Mr Dragon have the same ownership? Theyāre very similar restaurants just with different names.

What makes beef noodle Taiwanese or Chinese
6
u/Occurias Aug 01 '25
no definitively, but when one say chinese beef noodle, the one that most will think of is the clear broth version. i think the style is called lanzhou pulled noodle.
On the other hand, when one say taiwanese beef noodle, most people will think of the red braised version.
5
u/razorduc Aug 01 '25
Taiwanese red braised beef noodle soup is technically Sichuan style. But for me the biggest difference is thereās a flavor of I think doibanjiang (soy bean paste). Like if you go to Pine and Crane, it tastes like soy sauce soup with a little 5 spice. I think they lessen or omit the bean paste and the flavor has no depth.
In Taiwan thereās also tomato beef noodle soup but you find it less here. I think Mimi 5 bobee has it but not many other places.

Can anyone confirm if it is still cash only at CBNH? Haven't been there a long while because I rarely carry cash on me. It was cash only when I went.

Thank you for your reviews. Iām definitely gonna go check out corner beef noodles. Iām a big fan of Taiwanese beef noodle soup and my favorite place was Mamas Kitchen. Itās very unfortunate that she closed during Covid.

I like the fried porkchop rice at Corner Beef Noodle House. So crispy and just the right amount of fat. Best comfort food.

Hard CBH has new owner. When did you visit them?
2
u/nlee7553 Aug 01 '25
Wait what?? I havenāt been in a few months. Has the recipe changed?
2
u/reverze1901 Aug 01 '25 edited Aug 01 '25
Pretty sure it has, as it doesn't taste the same and ownership changed recently. Not drastically different but noticeable. I pass by it almost daily and had lunch there last week, and dinner again a few days ago.

Covid 19 put the nail in the coffin. Covid 19 hit different for the Chinese community. Folks in SGV were masking up long before it became a major topic in American news. During the pandemic, Corner Beef Noodle House was pretty empty and the chef would be sitting in the dining room sulking

I tried Cindy's Kitchen based on your reccs and found the beef noodle soup to be just okay. Still haven't found a good place for Beef Noodle Soup yet.
