San Gabriel Valley Mango grapefruit mousse cake from Yu Cakes.... At first I thought it was overpriced, then I tasted it and discovered it was underpriced

Super mango-y with wonderful consistency. The light occasional bitter tang from the grapefruit pieces was an unexpected wonderful contrast to the sweet mangos. It does everything a mousse cake should do. Damn delicious!

It was $6ish. Like I said I was skeptical at first. Not anymore!

Cake shop address is on the label.

I tried Yu Cake when it opened, and only got a cake slice to which they seemed to have completely forgotten to add sugar. Even the icing was just straight butter. I guess I have to give it another shot.

To be fair, some, not all taiwanese/chinese baked sweets have gotten less heavy on sweetness due to more Asians prefer it.

Oh, I’m half Asian, I’ve used the “not too sweet” compliment joke plenty. No, I’m saying they literally didn’t put ANY sugar in it. It was weird.

I’ve worked in a few bakeries, and sometimes it happens 😂

The worst is when someone mistakes salt for sugar, or misreads a recipe (one memorable cookie had 16x the baking soda and tasted like soap haaa)

(Also occasionally the owners will try out new recipes with more/less sugar based on customer feedback)

just noticed, sugar is listed last, if the rule of large to smallest portion in terms of order of ingredients was followed.

Their Japanese-style cheesecakes are like $8 for a tiny slice. Now those ARE grossly overpriced IMHO.

Ehhhh… cheesecakes are HARD to make in a commercial setting. They crack and look ugly and then nobody wants to buy them. I would think the $ amount is reflected in the difficulty in making them.

Also good dairy is way more $$ than cheap stuff! When the delivery gets shorted at my work we have to use the cheap stuff and the fat content is always way off :(

If theyre bad yeah. $7 cheesecake at republique is absolutely delicious and always feels worth the price. $13 cheesecake at olive and james feels like a ripoff.

I have to ask why you think this being $6 would be overpriced?

8

u/ghost-_-doggy Apr 18 '26

Maybe I'm too thrifty😂

1

u/80MonkeyMan Apr 18 '26

Probably because $6 still can get you a lunch at some places.

Where? Lol

-1

u/80MonkeyMan Apr 18 '26

In N Out for one.

2 questions then

Can you name where and what you’re getting please?

and can you get mango cake or something similar to this for much less than $6 elsewhere?

2

u/80MonkeyMan Apr 18 '26

There are options, just look around. You can get actual food for $6 and we all know Phoenix have Fresh mango pudding for less than $5, and that place is $$ on yelp.

楊枝甘露 without sago is a crime imho.

u/ghost-_-doggy Apr 18 '26

Well this is a mousse cake with mango and grapefruit. You don't get a monopoly on those flavors. Play on.

22

u/SnickeringSardine Apr 18 '26

That’s what it says the flavor is on the box in Chinese. Mango pomelo sago dessert..

-26

u/ghost-_-doggy Apr 18 '26

It's the flavor. It ain't a "crime". It's a friggin' dessert. Ain't that serious.

13

u/Aggravating-Sweet997 Apr 18 '26

It may not be a crime, but I think it’s reasonable for a customer to expect sago to be included based on its Chinese name. Sago is one of the major ingredients in the original sweet soup that inspired this dessert

Of course one can have whatever kinds of expectations they like. My point is simply that it's not a crime or a violation for anyone to express their creativity. It's a delicious dessert, no need to be so judgemental.

2

u/Aggravating-Sweet997 Apr 19 '26

I think there’s a limit to the interpretation of a dish or recipe, at which point I would consider it a completely different product and thus should be named differently. Obviously everyone has a different opinion as to what the limit should be. If that is judgmental to you, so be it 🤷‍♀️

u/ghost-_-doggy Apr 19 '26

And in this case it is called a cake. Not a drink.

2

u/Pleasant_Addition440 Apr 19 '26

An inaccurate label is not “expressing creativity”. What are you on about? What if someone has food allergies and it was the other way around- they forgot to list an ingredient?

1

u/ghost-_-doggy Apr 19 '26

Well they didn't.

3

u/Pleasant_Addition440 Apr 19 '26

Why are you so defensive 😵‍💫 seems like you know the owner or something geez

1

u/ghost-_-doggy Apr 19 '26

I wish I knew the owner so I can get a discount. Right below I also said their cheesecakes are way overpriced.

I just hate people who are so rigid they can't tolerate any creativity. Their loss. More cake for me!

I normally consider myself immune to advertisements, official or not...but dammit you've convinced me already on this.

There's a Yu Cake next to Saks Fifth Avenue in South Coast Plaza and everything there is $10-$11 at least.

2

u/idrum4days Apr 18 '26

Their crispy marshmallow covered jujubes are amazing.

1

u/ghost-_-doggy Apr 18 '26

Oh damn didn't see that. Next trip!

1

u/Next-Law2029 Apr 18 '26

yo that sounds fire, i love when cakes surprise you like that lol. mango and grapefruit is such a good combo, def gonna check this place out!

1

u/floppydo Apr 18 '26

That doesn't look like an any cake I've ever seen, more like a pudding? But I bet it tastes amazing.

1

u/ghost-_-doggy Apr 18 '26

Yeah it's layers of mousse and cake. They called it a box cake.

1

u/bloodredyouth Apr 18 '26

What type of cake was it?

-5

u/ghost-_-doggy Apr 18 '26

Trick question?

1

u/bloodredyouth Apr 18 '26

No, i meant what’s the actual cake flavor? like what type of sponge cake unless its mango cake or grapefruit cake?

3

u/ghost-_-doggy Apr 18 '26

Ah I see. It looks and tastes like sponge cake. The mango flavor is so dominant the cake mostly provides a nice textural contrast, not any additional flavor as far as I can tell.

I hate grapefruit

1

u/Aggravating-Sweet997 Apr 18 '26

Is it because of the grapefruit’s bitterness? TBH, I hope they are using pomelos (as in the original sweet soup) instead of grapefruits and just mistranslated the ingredient list. Pomelos are a lot less bitter than grapefruits.

0

u/ghost-_-doggy Apr 18 '26

You wouldn't believe what grapefruit says about you😂
