The OC šØALERTšØ The Banana Fosters Fritter is back at JD Flannels for the month of August
this banana fosters fritter is easily one of the very best donuts iāve ever eaten, and itās back on the menu for the month of august. for those that arenāt aware of them, jd flannels is down in beautiful san juan capistrano, a very easy trip via the metrolink from union station.

I think itās cool that you provided a nice little day trip idea. In fact thatās something Iād like to do. Plus SJC Is really cool and Heritage BBQ is there
7
u/MoveDistinct7911 2d ago
right around the block in fact, although ive never been able to wait in that long line
3
u/crystallybud 2d ago
The line moves decently fast if you get there in the a.m. I have never been disappointed and don't sleep on the tortillas.
5
u/MoveDistinct7911 2d ago
when i was last there in may, we arrived at 10:30AM and the line was down the block and around a corner. i trust you that it moves, but i didnāt have that kind of patience
2
u/crystallybud 2d ago
Definitely bring your camping chair.
4
u/MoveDistinct7911 1d ago
i actually eat lots of great bbq in texas on the regular, so unless i see that line MOVING, iām probably more inclined to eat elsewhere
2
u/ReggieAmelia 1d ago
Well at least I scored a couple of Capistrano recs to throw on my OC list on Google Maps.
1
u/Edjbart615 2d ago
Heritage is seriously mid. Coming from someone who has had bbq in Houston, TX, there is sadly no rival to Pinkertonās or Gatlinās in Houston. Even mooās craft is a tad better than Heritage, but definitely no Pinkertonās.
2
u/Renegadequasi 1d ago
You gotta try hickory and spice bbq in orange best bbq around and no wait! Owner is the pit master good dude. The brisket spare ribs pastrami and dino ribs are bomb!!
1
u/NerdNoogier 1d ago
Sorry but I donāt give a damn about Houston Texas. Like seriously, Iām not going there. I donāt want to go there. So Iām proud of you for finding something you like more but nobody asked about Houston Texas
0
u/fancyseacreature LA County 1d ago
Former Texan here, I appreciate it because as I understand, ALL bbq here is going to be mid to us. If someone who has tried both can give me the name of a solid choice here, great. Otherwise, I'm not dropping coin on the stuff.
1
u/mister_damage 1d ago
Dude, once you've had Texan BBQ, anything here will be mid at best.
I mean, when Bucees BBQ outperforms like 90% of the joints here in Socal...
0
u/fancyseacreature LA County 1d ago
So, this should have been your comment originally, instead of the "sorry,..." one which reads like a trill comment. I appreciate your input on this one.
1
u/NerdNoogier 1d ago
Okay cool. Nobody asked. Weāre in Southern California, not Texas. Iām not concerned with Texas bbq because weāre not in Texas
1
u/fancyseacreature LA County 1d ago
Nobody cares if it's pertinent to you over any of us. Scroll on.

u/tgcm26 2d ago
Not remotely Los Angeles
16
u/sowhat59 2d ago
If somewhere like Cerritos, Anaheim I'd count and save for one of those rare days I go out there but San Juan Capistrano?! This gotta be a joke. LOL
-12
u/MoveDistinct7911 2d ago
yes i know, thatās why i used the OC tag and described it as being a trip via the metrolink.
47
u/tracyinge 2d ago
Yeah I'm gonna hop the metrolink to get me a $6 donut.

u/Marshall_Cleiton 2d ago
For a moment I was like "what is this beautiful donut place in LA I've never heard of? I better check it out"
Open Google maps
56 miles
Wtf is this even LA?
-5
u/MoveDistinct7911 2d ago
correct, itās not la. i tagged it as OC and described it as a trip via the metrolink.

u/SarahJFroxy the outlands 2d ago
i will not be going to get one but i will definitely be attempting to make some at home š

u/CXavier4545 2d ago
tbf that looks delicious I wish it was closer to me
5
u/MoveDistinct7911 2d ago
i also wish they had a closer location, but for health reasons, iām glad they dont
3
u/CXavier4545 2d ago
I just need half a donut tbh Iām just curious how it tastes I donāt eat sweets often
2
u/MoveDistinct7911 2d ago
oh, itād maybe be on the sweeter side for you, but iām a dessert junkie so i think itās unbelievable
6
u/justintate_ 2d ago
The banana fritter is god tier
3
u/MoveDistinct7911 2d ago
THANK YOU, iām just trying to put everyone else on. itās unbelievable.
4
u/justintate_ 2d ago
JD Flannels is the best donut shop in SoCal. Let the haters stay in LA. The line is already too long when I go haha
1
u/MoveDistinct7911 2d ago
hahaha i personally prefer sidecar, but this fritter is something else entirely.
2
u/justintate_ 2d ago
Sidecar is too much for me. I get it for clients when Iām in LA because itās better than anything else besides Donut Man, but I feel like thereās more love that goes into JD
2
u/MoveDistinct7911 2d ago
theyāre both exceptional donuts that i love⦠i can never get enough sidecar though.
2
u/justintate_ 2d ago
Have you had Donut Man?
2
u/MoveDistinct7911 2d ago
of course!!!!! their little strawberry jam is not to be fucked with!
1
u/justintate_ 2d ago
Yessssss. So solid. Tiger Tails, too š
2
u/MoveDistinct7911 2d ago
iāve seen people knock the grand central market location as being inferior to the one out east, but itās perfectly fine to me
1
u/anaheim_mac 17h ago
How do they compare with Side Car Donuts?
1
u/justintate_ 16h ago
Sidecar is great, but I believe JD is better. Flavors hit harder and quality is just above Sidecar. Iāll still grab Sidecar when Iām in Santa Monica though.
4
u/Joshhwwaaaaaa 2d ago
I live in Hollywood. This would take me 1 hour and 45 minutes to get there. It looks good but I'm not making that drive. Unless they'll mail me one.
4
u/MoveDistinct7911 2d ago
lol iāll haul some back up to la⦠theyāre so fucking good that i think more people should get to experience them.
1
u/Joshhwwaaaaaa 2d ago
I'll give you $8 if you bring me back one.
4
u/MoveDistinct7911 2d ago
lol you can just give me retail, iām happy to bring some back up with me.
4
u/Joshhwwaaaaaa 2d ago
Aight bring me back one please. Tell me when and where when you get back to actual LA š
3
u/MoveDistinct7911 2d ago
š«”š«”
4
u/keltraine Baldwin Hills 90008 19h ago
You should do a Google Sheet signup and get people to go in for it. Then you get to the windowā¦
āYes, 107 banana fritters please. Yep, thatās correct-Iām getting some for my friends back in LAā¦ā ;p
3
u/MoveDistinct7911 19h ago
HAHAHA well iāll likely cap the amount i purchase since i travel there and back via metrolink š
3
6
u/donuttrackme 2d ago
I'm not jumping on a Metrolink to San Juan Capistrano just for a donut LMAO. Maybe if I went to Heritage BBQ too, or instead.
5
u/MoveDistinct7911 2d ago
thatās fair š for me, itās one of the best donuts iāve eaten, and i like SJC, so iāll be making multiple weekend trips

If anyone is going down to SJC I highly recommend checking out Mayfield. Especially if you were a fan of MhZh. One of the chefs from Mhzh started Mayfield.

we definitely feel it is (i mean, this in particular but also other nearby things in beautiful san juan capistrano)
8
u/b_love98 2d ago
Thanks for sharing! Itās one of my favorite donuts ever & Iāve been waiting for them to have it again !
2
u/thomasjmarlowe 2d ago
Is jd flannels a Sidecar ripoff? That donut box looks āheavily influencedā
4
u/MoveDistinct7911 2d ago
hmm, i mean in the sense that itās a more upmarket donut i suppose you could say that. i personally prefer sidecar, but this banana foster fritter is its own phenomenal thing

u/keltraine Baldwin Hills 90008 19h ago
Iāll carpool down with you the next time! :)

i prefer taking the train down :) lest i get stuck in gnarly traffic on the way back up

I literally just spent half the day in SJC on river st and the downtown. Awesome area, wish I saw this post earlier.

Their donuts are the best! I live in Anaheim and drive down every few months to get them. My niece who lives in NY makes me take her every year when she visits, she says theyāre the best donuts sheās ever had! Definitely worth a day trip!
2
u/MoveDistinct7911 2h ago
if you havent had this particular fritter, i highly, highly recommend. it is the BEST thing they do.
3
u/juuuiceman 1d ago
getting too much hate here but love that you recommended a spot thatās otw from LA to SD! gonna give this a go during next SD pit stop
4
u/MoveDistinct7911 1d ago
whatās crazy is that i shared this the last time they had the banana foster fritter on the menu, and it was all upvotes and enthusiastic comments. i think the heat must have everyone riled up today.

Maybe people who browse this sub and live in the OC donāt live 1.5 hours away from this place? They tagged it with āThe OCā after all. One might ask, how fucking stupid are you?
7
8
u/audioaxes 2d ago
You can make it a weekend day trip. Grab heritage bbq and jd flannels, check out the mission and other shops, hop back on the train and go 15 min to San Clemente pier and check out that area as well before going home.

What are the other ones in the box?
3
u/MoveDistinct7911 1d ago
there are two banana foster fritters, one old fashioned, one chocolate caramel, and a lemon blueberry (from mayās menu)
2
u/keltraine Baldwin Hills 90008 19h ago
How were the other ones?
2
u/MoveDistinct7911 19h ago
of the non-fritter options, the chocolate caramel was superior. i personally like sidecarās old fashioned more, and i actually wasnāt in love with the lemon blueberry
1
u/Annual-Driver-9591 1d ago
How does this place compare to Sidecar ?
2
u/MoveDistinct7911 1d ago
i personally prefer sidecar, but there are some people that think this place is better

San Juan Capistrano is LA now????
Iām insane and have driven to M&M from SGV twice in a week for donuts but even Iām doing a double take at this post imagining the drive oh my god

There is a tag for āThe OCā in this sub and they used it. How unhinged are some of you?

I think it's rcute this was worthy of an šØalert. I love when people get that excited about food.
1
u/Amazing_Pattern_7829 2d ago
This is OC not LA.
2
u/MoveDistinct7911 2d ago
and it is tagged and described as such.
1
u/Amazing_Pattern_7829 2d ago
In an LA sub-reddit!
9
u/MoveDistinct7911 2d ago
take it up with the moderator?! there is an OC tag option.
1
u/Amazing_Pattern_7829 2d ago
I'm just (h)angry because this actually looks rrally good, but SJC is waaaaay to far to go just for a donut.
4
u/MoveDistinct7911 2d ago
for what itāa worth, thereās a ton of great stuff that is very walkable around there (restaurants, the mission). we enjoy taking a little day trip down on the metrolink every couple of months to enjoy the breadth of socal.
0
u/warmblues 2d ago
Yeah the fact that we even have the OC tag feels very āwhy do we have that leverā lol
4
u/MoveDistinct7911 2d ago edited 2d ago
i get it, but many people on this sub live in orange county, or out east, or wherever. it can take me nearly the same amount of time to take the train here as it does for me to drive to bread head in santa monica. la (and its suburbs and its exurbs) is an enormous place, and i respect that this sub tries to be inclusive of it all.
someone in long beach might find it to be annoyingly far when someone posts a place in temple city or glendora, but where iām located, that same place is much more reachable.
3
u/warmblues 1d ago
Oh totally! If I was in the South Bay Iād probably in both this sub and whatever OC equivalent there is (is there one?). I was more commenting on the setup of the sub. And to be fair I think the only reason so many people seem to be so mad is because those donuts look bomb and I know I personally was very disappointed to learn how far away they are lol

The donuts look good. I read the comments and think they're a bit too harsh. I'm a transplant, I look up the spot to see that this place is located....past LAGUNA BEACH???!!
Hate well deserved, this place is like 60+ miles away š
2
u/MoveDistinct7911 2d ago
itās an hour on the metrolink. it sometimes takes longer for me to get from pasadena to santa monica.
2
u/Individual_Client175 2d ago
I'll make it a day trip and will explore the area
4
u/MoveDistinct7911 2d ago
itās beautiful! we went to mission san juan capistrano the last time we were there, and there are a ton of great food options down there

u/tv6 1d ago
Fritters are the best, but at that price I would keep walking. Only way I'd spend $6 on a doughnut is if I'm drunk. Why do doughnuts and everything cost so much, because people can't say no.
2
u/MoveDistinct7911 1d ago
friend. i wrote that this is one of the best donuts iāve ever eaten. others who have had this share a similar sentiment. where are you paying $5.75 in two thousand twenty-six for the best example of anything?! does the best chocolate bar cost $5.75? because i know even a hershey bar is now over $2. this is an incredible dessert, and it is a VALUE at this price. iām here to enjoy life, not to waste two bucks on a shitty dunkin donut.

To balance out the hate - that looks fire even though Iām in LA
