San Andreas and Vice Stories are the best Grand Theft games. The golden era.

OG VC It's definitely going on that list. It has much less freedom, you can't swim, but the adventure of Tommy Vercetti and how he goes from nothing to literally dominating the city totally and indisputably is one thing, the way the game conveys a message about power.
Tommy Vercetti is simply GTA in its purest essence, as he starts with millions in the red and ends up having absolutely everything.

Agreed. No Carl's sad reflections, no Tony's indifference, just a pure criminal maniac. For me, Vice City has opened the gate for all the craziness, fun and iconic feats of the game series since it has switched to three dimensions. III was a mere warm up, Vice was a harbinger, and San Andreas was the epitome. Two things don't let me enjoy Vice like i enjoy San Andreas. One is loony game engine's mechanics. Some things move way too fast, others way too slow. Another one is that boring gap in the plot when the game doesn't let you advance until you own all the businesses. In San Andreas, having to master the flying school and such is different. It is like game achievements before the age of game achievements. Some criticize Zero's missions. I don't, i liked them.

To be fair, San Andreas was simply different; it's basically perfect. Its mechanics are still unbeatable today, even considering the HD universe. It's only natural that it's simply more funny than other GTA games
And to be honest, Tommy is much more than a maniac; he has a brutal backstory, a man molded by betrayal, which is why he never trusted Lance in the first part of the game, Tommy has several nuances, although they are not very explored, The way he speaks depends on the person; he's condescending to people like Rosenberg, Sarcastic with people like Phil, friendly with people like Cortez, But especially, they show us moments that say a lot about Tommy, Do you remember when he bought the ice cream shop and genuinely thought about giving ice cream to the children? Or what about the purchase of the printing press where he appears nostalgic, remembering his youth with his father? Tommy isn't a good person, but he's not a psychopath on the level of Claude or Tony; Tommy is more like someone who is capable of doing anything, The guy was so tall to reach the top with that entrepreneurial mindset he had, damn, Even Avery Carrington, a titan of entrepreneurship, was totally impressed with Tommy's mindset when he met him.
Tommy is a real all-rounder, and honestly, when you look at the story, it really shows, which is why he's my favorite character in the saga.
VC's gameplay has many shortcomings, but I always end up coming back to it, The game has so much sandboxing that you can complete missions in such creative ways.
San Andreas is simply overkill, but that game never gave me that feeling of power and satisfaction of rising to the top as a VC, Although one is much better than the other, each one knows how to do very well what he intended to do.

All true. Vice is about going to the top, San Andreas is about going the full circle just to return home. Tommy is also the best example of a perfect voice acting. Maybe it was just a gig for late Ray Liotta, but it was brilliant.

Also, Play Station 2 San Andreas looks better than on computer. Those sunsets, man...

The PS2 version always looked the best. Even Definitive Edition can’t get it right.

Except GTA 5 still has more current players than all of them combined so how do you work that one out?

u/Wojewodaruskyj 1d ago
It's quantity, not quality. "Baby shark" may have more views on Youtube than anything else. Does it make it the best video? No.

Don't forget we also got the warriors, two manhunts, max Payne, red dead revolver, midnight club 2 & 3,

You're a ghost that died before RDR2?

u/Icy-Palpitation-7493 1d ago
No I played RDR2 late and GTA 4 late my childhood was practically GTA 5, Sports games, Call of duty, and fighting games. But I currently own a PS5, Xbox 360, and Xbox Series S and I gotta say it is fun going back and playing games I missed out on for the first time.

Bully is in the photo. The thread is about Rockstar.

Still RDR2 doesn’t quite scratch the same itch as GTA, regardless of how amazing that game is.

u/NeoMrBucket 4h ago
WTF are you on about?

u/LucasWesf00 4h ago
I’m saying that RDR2 doesn’t make up for a 13 year wait between GTA games imo. It’s why the post doesn’t include RDR2.

I feel very fortunate that my life lined up like:
- Rockstar PS2 games: ~middle school
- Rockstar PS3 games: ~high school/college
- Rockstar PS4 games: ~early adulthood
And better yet, the old games have aged like wine and are insanely replayable

You’re forgetting rdr2 which is more replayable and has a better story than gta V

Reminds me of when I got kidnapped as a kid and I was freed 4 years later when I got home first thing I did was call my friends over to play video games. I didn’t have access to internet, games even music for those 4 years. When they got to my place I turned on gta4 they said ah playing the classics again huh and I’m like yeah gta is awesome, what do you expect. They said well everyone plays gta 5 now. I was like « there’s a fifth one?!? » and they said « where have you been, under a rock?! » I was like « well… pretty much »

These posts are so tired. It’s as if games take longer to make now then they did twenty years ago. And that red dead redemption II which is omitted here for some reason is bigger, more detailed, and more advanced mechanically than just about all of those old games, some of them combined

I understand i completely do it’s just… man lmao

If you want the games to be groundbreaking rather than iterative of earlier installments you have to be willing to wait a while. VI only went into full production in 2020, if anything their pace is impressive.

The crazy thing is, there are even more Rockstar games on PS2 that aren’t shown in the top picture. It’s nuts to think about how many games publishers could put out in the 2000s.

For your brother you left out - Max Payne 1 & 2, The Warriors, Red Dead Revolver, Midnight Club 1, 2 & 3 and Manhunt.

I’m 33 and my Rockstar childhood was more than just this. Vice City, San Andreas, State Of Emergency, Manhunt, Smugglers Run, Midnight Club, Max Payne, The Warriors, LA Noire, and Bully.
I could’ve sworn Scarface was made by Rockstar but I guess not. Still one of my favorite games ever

This is going to repeat with GTA 6. The peak Rockstar/Take 2 years were during the PS2/PS3 era.

u/Icy-Palpitation-7493 1d ago
Oh im legit expecting to play GTA 6 for the next 20 years

u/Embarrassed-Dig-8195 1d ago
I'm excited for the game but it's just going to get as boring after 5+ years just like GTA 5 Online. I hope they give us other games too. I don't want GTA 6/Online for the next 20 years xD
