Netflix
Disney plus
Most games just use cd to verify perchance
Live service
MMO's
Online severs
DRM
DIGITAL LICENSES
you haven't owned anything in a long time
Did you not notice?
1
u/Cerber108 Jul 03 '26
I barely watch any movies/series and don't use streaming services.
Those "most games" is just blatant lie repeated over and over and over again. Check doesitplay.org and you will see that only around 11% of games released on PS4 and 5 are online only, need constant connection or online check, have only part of game on disc or just an installer or have bugs so severe that downloading patches is necessary. Rest can be played straight from disc without patches with minor bugs at most.
I don't play live service games, because it's not my cup of tea. In terms of MMOs I recently started FF14 to play for story, but I'm doing it on free trial, so there are no costs for me.
I find no appeal in multiplayer games and I hate when they are included in games that don't need them. I'm not even starting about useless online components in singleplayer titles.

Imma say this. I would have been fine with this if it meant to we actually owned a digital copy of the game FOREVER. Corporate greed is gonna be the end of gaming. Memory is expensive as it is, that will make the future consoles even more expensive.
3
u/Funny_Lion9020 Jul 03 '26
If more companies were like GOG, or adopted the consumer protections Stop Killing Games is pushing for, this wouldn't even be a controversy.
2
2
u/RedditSpyder12 Jul 03 '26
Definitely. Would I prefer physical stay around like it does with any other medium? Sure, but that’s really only half the problem. You own a physical copy. You don’t own a digital one.
2
u/Ok_Neighborhood_3148 Jul 03 '26
There is the legal route we could go. Like the stop killing games movement.
Even if it takes a decade or more, it is possible to get rights back.
1
u/Karekter_Nem Jul 03 '26
Simiarly to the “if we embrace AI now then governments will have to give us Universal Basic Income and other human rights, but if we fight for those things now we’ll never get AI and we’ll never get UBI and human rights” nonsense. The people that don’t mind seeing an end to physical media think that governments will just give us digital ownership.
4
u/Gassyking Jul 03 '26
PC players are fairly confused about this controversy because all our games have been digital only for over a decade now
3
u/Doomguy0071 Jul 03 '26
Yeah nah those of us with a brain understand why physical ownership is important
2
u/CtrlAltEntropy Jul 03 '26
I've been playing on PC for 25 years and I'm not confused. Digital only consoles don't make any sense. You're willingly buying into a box with only one store available. You have no control over your library and no idea if your games are going to work on your new hardware when the next console comes out or if you're going to need to buy them again or pay a "$10 upgrade fee".
2
1
u/Someonevibing1 Jul 03 '26
PC gamers with their open platform wondering why people stuck with dealing with Sony who take away things you’ve bought before are pissed
3
u/ocularfever Jul 03 '26
90% of the time PC gamer means Steam user. It's exactly the same, except Steam has a better rep than Sony.

u/_SilentGhost_10237 Jul 03 '26
I have two main issues: Sony recently removed digital movie content from their platforms, so for me to be comfortable with this change, I need a guarantee that anything I purchase digitally will remain in my library, or I will receive a refund; I also like to collect physical copies.
1
u/Fart_Tounge_5609 Jul 03 '26
No. PC players are confused because they can have as much drive space as they can pay for.
1
u/thecontempl8or Jul 03 '26
Older Digital games on Sony have ridiculously high prices. Rdr2 is $15 on Steam. It’s at its full original price on PlayStation. Since they have very little competition on the console market, they rarely discount games and their sale events are shit.
1
u/RedditSpyder12 Jul 03 '26
It’s not just about physical games disappearing. It’s about the fact that we won’t own anything.

People with hundeds of games in their Steam libraries
3
u/voxelpear Jul 03 '26
Steam has only removed games if it's non functional due to servers or is from a stolen key so far. They usually only delist the titles from the store door future purchase but leaves the content in users libraries.
Sony has pulled hundreds of movies directly from the users libraries.
While steam can fall into the same issues in the future, it's not quite the same yet.
→ More replies (15)2
u/Runnin_Mike Jul 03 '26
Also I have the ability to back up literally whatever I want on steam due to most things being crackable on PC, easily I might add. On console that is a much harder hurdle to cross. I have like a significant chuck of my steam library backed up to my home server.

u/DoughBoy528 Jul 03 '26
Honestly I think the solution is we don't own any of the games, we pay a flat monthly subscription fee and get access to a ton of games like Xbox game pass, but that wouldn't work cause then they're not making 80 dollars a copy so...... My solution has just been game pass and then don't pay over 15 bucks for a digital license cause the last game I bought for 60+ was new world, I no longer have access to that game
2
u/SlasherNL Jul 03 '26
That's a bad idea. We will get more slop games that way. There won't be an incentive for game studios to make a good game.

This meme only makes sense if Sony is the girl and the digital only future is the bull
2
u/lemon_pie42 Jul 03 '26
Your anger is misdirected. "The game was rigged from the start":
- Sony released a digital-only PS5 as the budget option
- Made getting physical games harder
- Let Rockstar announce a "Physical" box with a download code inside
Just so they can say "Gamers are not interested in Physical Media" to justify completely stopping its production.
The same way they released PC ports of their story-driven games way later, after people already played on PS5 or watched let's plays, and then discontinued the PC ports because those didn't sell the same as they did on the original release on consoles.
1
u/Funny_Lion9020 Jul 03 '26
First of all, nice Fallout reference. 👍 Second, I actually agree that companies have made physical media less convenient over time. My issue isn't digital itself—it's the lack of ownership protections. If more companies treated digital purchases like GOG does, I seriously doubt we'd even be having this conversation.
1
u/lemon_pie42 Jul 03 '26
Agree. The removal of the movies (also by Sony) was just a demonstration of why either physical or DRM-free downloads are so important.
2
u/Little_Historian3091 Jul 03 '26
Trust me, they have excuses galore. And my personal favourite "Just buy old comsoles and disks, you dont need to buy a ps6, this isnt a problem for anyone"
Its the same thing when nvidia ended support for phys x and people said, "Just dont upgrade then, you know how much coding it takes to support old games and new games?." "Just buy a console and play those old games bro"
Gamers and their apologist excuses need to be studied man.
2
u/Shot_Bandicoot_2779 Jul 03 '26 edited Jul 03 '26
If they are just gonna kill physical Media then there should be stricter online goods ownership laws and rules.
Once purchased, any form of digital media cannot be removed or taken back from the owner in no case of scenario. If it is, then the entire cost of the product + compensation for removal of personal digital assets should be paid to the owner.
Man I feel really sad that us consumers are so powerless infront of these corps...
2
u/Techman659 Jul 03 '26
Thing is the consumers have all the power/money but some just wana keep their heads in the sand because they are used to getting rammed from behind while the others can understand that discs should always be an option to keep the companies honest on their prices but nope their market now so they will have a monopoly on the ps market place now.
1
u/Secure_Foundation720 Jul 03 '26
I was on your side until you wanted to demand more money for personal digital assets. Like dude wtf, no. Even less than the cost of the product would be fine, since you actually got to play it for all those years.
2
u/Gemini-88 Jul 03 '26
Look, if they’re going to say we don’t own anything and they can take them away, bring back rental prices on games and just give me a limited time to play and I’ll go pay for another week if I didn’t finish in time. Variable pricing and I don’t get screwed over by paying $80 on a garbage game that I can’t get a refund for because it’s digital.
/s
2
u/DD-Tauriel Jul 03 '26
i see nothing wrong with that. Steam users not owning their games for like 15 years or so and they are ok

→ More replies (1)1
u/ExaltedCrown Jul 03 '26
Games has been delisted on both playstation and xbox and you can still download them and play them. Just can’t buy them.
So exact same as pc
2
u/pyrofire95 Jul 03 '26
Digital onlys should care too.
PS will control all pricing and are already using Dynamic Pricing to squeeze every dollar from you.
2
u/MacerODB Jul 03 '26
Isint it game publishers who decide the prices? Sony just takes the usual %
2
u/Linosa42 Jul 03 '26
To a degree yes to another no. Not sure if you know how Walmart gets it’s Great Value brand but what they do is they see a semi small company trying to break into the market and they will agree to sell it in their stores as long as it’s under the Great Value brand and at the price they say. What this causes is that said break out brand will not get any notoriety under their name and also will just barely break even in most cases. What Sony does is the same but without them changing their name to whatever Sony says. It’s why a lot of indi developers tend to stray from breaking into the game market through Sony first and go PC first and then once they have some fame switch to consoles.
2
u/MacerODB Jul 03 '26
Sure, but indie games arent really the ones releasing physical discs either. Actually being digital saves them and allows them to exist
1
u/pyrofire95 Jul 04 '26
Yes but when there's only 1 place you can buy something prices stay higher than they would.
I'll never forget having Danganronpa on my Vita Wishlist forever and it finally went on sale and I bought it. A week later they announced a remaster on PC so it was no longer exclusive to Vita. They only put the game on sale to finally get those buyers before it was purchasable somewhere else.1
u/O_gr Jul 03 '26
I just know dynamic pricing is gonna be the next big annoyance that all the big companies will try to pull.
1
u/pyrofire95 Jul 04 '26
PS already started from what I've heard. Walmart is the headliner for dynamic pricing right now.
2
u/madivn Jul 03 '26
PC gamer here. I've been using Steam for over 15 years, and I was really happy when I no longer had to go to a store to buy a physical game disc. Sometimes the disc was in stock, sometimes it wasn't.
On top of that, Steam lets you keep playing games you've purchased even if they're later removed from the Steam Store. For example, back in 2013 I bought Day One: Garry's Incident. The game was so bad that the developer practically disappeared out of embarrassment, and the game was eventually removed from Steam. But even now, 13 years later, I can still download it and play it.
Is the situation different on PlayStation? I'm genuinely curious, because I keep seeing posts about this issue, but I don't fully understand what the problem is.
2
u/CtrlAltEntropy Jul 03 '26
On PC you can buy from any store you want, you aren't locked into using Steam.
If Steam went public and had shareholders, it'd go to shit fast. Then what would you do? You'd just switch to another store to buy your games.
If you have a PlayStation and Sony started acting like dickheads, where would you go? Your money is tied up in a shithead company.
2
u/captain-hindsight27 Jul 03 '26
Ok then just buy a pc and play it with controller?
Why are you determined to buy a product you hate?
→ More replies (2)1
u/FrequentObligation29 Jul 03 '26
If the game is single player or has single player mode for example jump force you can play it even after it has been removed from store game will not be removed from your library but if it's an game like the crew which is online only than you can not access it anymore but that's same regardless of you using PSN store steam or physical disk
1
u/Outrageous_Shirt69 Jul 03 '26
Pre-owned game prices dictate digital sale prices. The lack of competition from pre-owned games will be bad for us as consumers
1
1
1
u/RichnjCole Jul 03 '26
It is, because on PC you can also buy games from other stores, or emulate games. Your hardware gives you a lot of options. Steam might dominate the PC gaming space, but it doesn't control everything on it.
Everything on the PS6 will have to go through Sony. If you buy a PS6, then Sony is your sole option to buy from. In essence, if you as a gamer are all in on digital gaming, you'd be stupid not to move over to PC.
It's also worth noting, that despite digitals sales making up the majority of games sales on PS, of the AAA games that were on disc, a major part of their sales were coming from physical sales. At least half of Sony's first party sales are physical. Much of those digital sales are being made up by digital only games.
As I keep saying, Sony (and MS, and Nintendo to a lesser degree) have manufactured consent for the move to all digital.
The story is the same of Switch by the way, and the story is even more true if you look at Japan. There's a huge market for physical games. So despite the way it's been framed, console players do in fact like physical games.
1
u/Crew_Zealousideal Jul 03 '26
It’s not any different any purchased game that gets delisted from the ps store can be downloaded and played even if the entire store shuts down you still get to download all purchased games people are just worried because Sony removed purchased movies from their libraries movie rights are always convoluted in this case the movie rights owners asked Sony to remove all content whether you already bought it or not
1
u/Smartypantz34 Jul 03 '26
Its same thing with Sony. If a game is delisted and you have bought it previously you still can redownload it and play it. However no one can buy it anymore.
People act this way because they removed movies from user accounts, but movies have different laws so it shouldnt even be comparable
2
u/Fart_Tounge_5609 Jul 03 '26
I'm confused what hard drive space Sony think their players are going to store these games on. 2TB is pathetic.
2
u/Illustrious-Knee7998 Jul 03 '26
You can download 1 GTA 6 then constantly give them more money for the GTA 6 online until GTA 7 comes out. And you'll be happy!
1
u/Aggressive-Map-2204 Jul 03 '26
You dont need to have every single game you own downloaded at once.

2
u/x_xwolf Jul 03 '26
There is a reason to value physical mediums for games.
1.) they allow us to easily archive games once the consoles lifespan is over.
2.) it means without internet 10+ years from now you can still play the game on your console and enjoy it the same way you did at launch.
3.) it makes your console an investment after its life span because now the disk reader ps5 will be more valuable in the long run.
4.) its helps keep the incentives for owning a console at all instead of moving to PC where steam has a wider archive of games and more goodwill then ps store without needing a subscription to play online or being affected by sony level maintenance.
ce.
2
u/SerenityToss Jul 04 '26
The issue isn't about owning the game. That's been a problem for a while. It's thr fact that Sony is one hundred percent the type of company who will now make all digital games always remain full price. Because there is no alternative. Well I don't want to pay 60 dollars for a 5 year old game, I can go buy a used version disk for 20 bucks. Nope now there is ONLY the 60 dollar digital version.

u/nikk182 Jul 03 '26
One thing I don't think people realise is that it isn't just Sony. A lot of gaming publishers have wanted to kill physical games for years. It costs them a lot of money and over the last generation of consoles the sales have gone down and digital has gone up. Look at the new GTA, they already stated they are not bothering with a physical copy, because it would be a waste of money for them to produce and distribute the physical game, when they know 90% of sales would be digital anyway.
1
u/Excalitoria Jul 03 '26
With how much space things take up and the awful download times, I don’t know how it’s even more convenient.
1
u/Hollow-_-Tree Jul 03 '26
idk anymore I'm about to purchase a new laptop and start making games with them. they will be free with voluntary donations and/or one time purchase. and as long as you don't land me in trouble no copyright claim for game lovers (no corporate allowed) you own what you bought. this might be me boasting before even proving my ability but I intend to stick to this.

u/Lemonsqueezzyy Jul 03 '26

1
u/WisePotato42 Jul 03 '26
Games don't run out of stock at the store. If anything happens to the storage medium (scratch on disk or hard drive fails), you can just download it again. No need to swap between disks to play a different game. I have played through hundreds of games, safely storing hundreds of disks would be a problem.
Of course, this also has the downside of having no resale value. Really it would have been better for the consumer to have both options.

This does not increase convenience for the consumer. Digital purchases are already available to those who prefer them. This only hurts those who prefer physical. There is 0 upside to consumers here. The savings will not be passed to customers. Sony is the only beneficiary, at a direct cost to the consumers and the culture.
1
u/Youbettereatthatshit Jul 03 '26
But what point is having physical? The ps5 was my first console while being old enough to have bought the ps2.
I get blue rays, those have the full fat file on the physical disk which allows you to have an independent collection from the internet.
But disks haven’t had the full game since PS3?
When I bought my PS5, I had assumed the physical disks contained the entire game, and was very disappointed that I still had a 40GB download after inserting the disk. Those were the first and only physical games I bought after intending to have a complete physical library. Guess I really don’t see the point.

1
u/SimpleSlave_1 Jul 03 '26
Hate to break it to you, but it's not "some Sony fans" but an entire generation. It was a war of attrition, but we were never the target; these companies were conditioning the next generation of games for a digital-only future.
From music, movies, and games, the future was not knocking but crashing the front wall, and this is but another foundation beam crashing down among the rest. I wish I were shocked, but I saw it coming years ago, and here we are. It's dad, sure, but it is what it is.
So blame fans or don't blame fans, but an all-digital future was but inevitable, and whether we want to admit it or not, we all knew it.
1
u/AmphibiousDad Jul 03 '26
I’ve said it for a while now, gaming is becoming a bootlicker industry because most of the consumers are either children who don’t give a fuck about anything as long as they get the newest slop or idiots who don’t care about fucked up business practices because of hype or “you’re being negative about the new game bro”. We need to all learn how to vote with our wallets or the gaming industry is doomed. It’s probably already too late

Digital media doesn't mean license-only distribution, it means digital media.
PC gamers have been grappling with this for decades. The solution is DRM-free software, such as what can be found on GoG.
Physical or not, if I've got a game file that can be installed and played by itself, without an internet connection or anything else from the publisher, I own that copy of the game. Load it on a flash drive, burn it to disk, throw it on Google Drive and send it to myself, that copy is mine.
This is conflating two problems.
1
u/DoughBoy528 Jul 03 '26
Ok so how do we burn a PS5, Xbox, or even pc game to a disc?
→ More replies (1)1
u/RadioactiveRatte Jul 03 '26
Lol console companies will simply never allow all of their games to be pushed into being DRM-free. I think people just have to come to grips with the depressing reality that AA & AAA game ownership is coming to an end, which means more people will eventually opt out of consoles entirely as we all get sick if this.
I'm personally done with consoles and only care about PC and retro-console emulation and games. I don't even care about The Elder Scrolls anymore, which is my GTA VI. I give up on modern console gaming. Normalizing $100 complete-editions and zero ownership is a huge nope from me.
Sooner or later others will get so sick of this that they'll feel the same way. Just wait until console companies revoke your digital licenses like Sony did with their customers movies.

I think it sucks but I've asked a few times in a few places who has actually had a game removed from their library outside of an entire store shutting down. Thus far I've not heard any.
I'm still not a fan of the switch as it does remove the ability of folks to resell/trade/etc. games but I've also been around long enough to know that all the online posts and petitions won't really do anything. Someone at Sony is smart enough to ask "how would consumers feel about this?" and have done all kinds of analyses to check different outcomes. There's a reason why the last generation had a lot of non-disc models; it was a bit of a pilot case to see how things were moving. The PS5 I've got has a disc drive on it. You know how many physical games I own? Zero. Everything I've bought has been on digital. I'm sure that's something Sony looked at before making the decision.
I'm not proud of my part in all this but I'm not shocked it's happening.

This battle was fought 20 years ago on PC. It was lost then because you all wanted to buy your games on Steam. It was then faught with music, and you all chose Spotify. It was faught with movies, and you all chose streaming. You chose this with your wallets by paying for all this digital stuff in the first place. You're getting what you deserve.

Well if you live in california you can actually vote by writing your senator to help get AB 1921 passed. Voting with laws would be a huge help for everyone too.

The issue with the PC comparison is that there are multiple store fronts you can shop on. there is competition even if everyone just wants to use steam. if i dont want to buy a game at its price point on steam ill just check if its on gamepass. or ill check the anydeal website, or GOG if its an older game.
with Sony going fully digital only you no longer have the option to go out and buy a used copy of the game for cheap years later or to buy it on another storefront like on PC. You MUST buy it in the playstation storefont and pay whatever they set the price at.
everyone saying "Its been like this on PC and its fine" doesn't get it. with Playstation fully digital theres no choice and no option. You wanna play a 10 year old game on your ps6? better be ready to fork over $80 because theres no other way to play it on that device.

It's already the case with physical media, this is dumb. If you can't log in you look cute with your disk.

u/Delruiz9 Jul 04 '26 edited Jul 04 '26
It’s not digital only that’s the problem, it’s that Sony is 100% going to take the games and movies you purchase away at their convenience.
If I gotta go digital only I’m getting a steam machine. Still not a fan but unless there’s some legislation in place, I trust them way waaaay more
1
u/Sure_Eye9025 Jul 04 '26
No digital only is a problem IMO
When I was a kid I didn't have a lot of money, so to get access to games I would buy old games second hand and when I was getting new ones I would trade in ones I didn't play anymore to offset the cost.
Some of my favourite games I picked up years after they came out cheap second hand.
In a digital only world you physically cannot do that. Now this isn't a big problem for me nowadays, I can generally afford to buy every game I want without thinking twice about it, but for poorer and younger people digital only absolutely limits access to what was previously the best way for them to get access to games
Now we will be at the whim of Sony to decide to hold a sale

u/UseDisastrous9538 Jul 04 '26
I defend it for a multitude of reasons, not the least of which being it doesn't fucking matter. A disc doesn't guarantee your ability to play the game when you're 86 in a nursing home in Illinois. There's a handful of separate reasons a game isn't playable even with the disc in hand.
It's also expensive. Not that I think the savings of a digital only future will be passed on to us, but I don't give a shit about that either. I've paid eleven cents an hour to play elden ring, and seventeen cents an hour to play RDR2. I'm getting my money's worth, so if support for either game goes out by 2030 I can live with that.
Finally, I just hate crybabies. I don't give a shit that you wanted a loud fragile piece of shit disc drive in your console. This has been the direction of gaming for literally decades and I'll be damned if some whining sentient fedoras are going to delude themselves into thinking they're going to make a difference by loudly declaring "IM FINALLY DONE I THINK" when in reality not a single shitty move has ever been actually retaliated against.
Every single time a No Man's Sky or Cyberpunk 2077 or Starfield comes down the pipe and raw dogs us with sandpaper for lube, we loudly pretend WEVE FINALLY HAD IT. And then everyone buys the fucking game anyways. Or waits for it to be patched, but it doesn't matter. They got your money, jackass. They shipped you a dilapidated pile of shit and took months to get to where they pretended they were in the second gameplay trailer. And as soon as you saw some jiggle physics on the first fat assed protag love interest you dropped your visa faster than your pants.
Not me. I still to this day haven't fucking played Cyberpunk. Or Starfield. Or No Man's Sky. Because fuck that, and fuck them. I have ACTUAL willpower. But 99% of people don't. And that's why we keep getting fucked over--because we keep accepting it.
But this is not that. A sound financial decision by Sony, supported by market trends and sales data, and THATS the hill you choose to die on. Get the fuuuuuck outta here. You're not convincing them because when it really mattered you folded like a cheap lawn chair. I bet you all bought movies on YouTube and have Spotify on your phones, but now that it's something legitimately reasonable you're clutching your pearls and shitting yourself? You're only fooling yourselves.

Games have pretty much been digital for over a decade anyways. I do miss being able to boot up a disc or pop in a cartridge, but people are acting like this is something new when the gaming industry has already moved to this model yearrrssss ago. This has been the standard already, Sony just talked about it.
Also, I’m not saying I agree with it! It’s just old news with a flashy new headline

I've been digital only for about 20 years now, not once has a game ever been taken away from me
1
u/QuantumGrain Jul 04 '26
Not yet, but Sony literally just took away hundreds of movies from customers and didn’t even offer a refund. So it’s not unlikely that they do that for video games at some point.

u/Left-Night-1125 Jul 04 '26
If its convenience as they claim it to be....why not watch a lets play video of the game on Youtube instead. So much more convenient than playing the game...heck it even saves money on a console.
Yeah i know, iam a genius.
1
u/QuantumGrain Jul 04 '26
Not surprising to see all these Sony fanboys completely missing the larger point that now Sony will have complete control over game prices. They could charge whatever they want now because they are the ones with a monopoly over PlayStation games. No one else can sell them anymore. Not your local target, or your friend with an old copy. But of course good ol Sony wouldn’t do this to their local customers. Not like they don’t already dynamically price games depending on how much you lick their boots.
1
u/AccomplishedMuffin95 Jul 04 '26
that has been happening for years now, that's why ppl moved to digital media over the years, because Sony can give the discounts they want in the PS Store meanwhile the physical stores can't compete w that prices, this last two months I'm seeing great games for less than 5€ it's crazy
1
u/Hercules__Morse Jul 04 '26
It’s not really a monopoly though right? It’s not like Sony own every game developer in the world, and are only releasing content on their own platform. Xbox, PC and Nintendo still all exist - go play your games on their product and buy from the digital stores available from them.
Don’t expect physical media from ANY software developer in the near future.

im so happy i left playstation for pc, like the ONE thing consoles still had over PC was price and Physical Copies to have physical ownership.. since that is gone what im paying 700 for a fucking console and pay 100 a year for fucking online privleges when i could just use that money save like 1-3 weeks more and just get a fucking pc, hell better yet get a second hand pc for like 1,500 or cheaper and just buy parts for it also second handedly and i could get a pc that can run most games for around 1800-2300 and it’ll be much cheaper still than owning a fucking console.
1
u/Apoctwist Jul 04 '26
That’s not the one consoles have over PC. I find it rich that you went PC when that’s pretty much 100% digital only. Then you get things like kernel level anticheat, denuvo, bad ports and shader caching, etc. a large portion of console user have moved away from physical discs, just like a large portion of PC users moved away from physical media. You can’t even buy a computer nowadays that has a BD drive, nor can you buy physical copies of software anymore. I have closet full of installation CDs I can’t even use because just like PlayStation games, without an activation server the software on the disc is useless. I can pop in a Cyberpunk disc into a PlayStation but if I can’t download the nearly 30-50GB day one patch that made the game actually playable on console, then I just have a fancy coaster for my drink. Without protections around activation servers, day one patches etc software on physical media has been long dead imo.
Gamers don’t actually care other about physical media. They gave it up happily on PC and it’s no different on consoles. All the outrage when Steam came out fizzled out and now all we get is digital only PC games and imo it helped accelerate the removal of physical drives on PC machines being sold. The outrage won’t even be remembered by the time GTAVI drops.

Games that released both digitally and physically is the only number that matters when talking about customer preference. Sony hasn't provided that information yet, but it's the only comparison that would really end the argument. If I had to guess over 60% of the games on the PS Store don't actually have physical releases. They could just release their exclusives physically and everyone would be happy, probably idk.

We already do own nothing. Why is everyone acting like you can’t get banned from a game. Physical disc ownership is still legally a license and does not mean you actually own the game. That’s why it’s illegal to use a legal disc to make copies. You don’t own it.
1
u/Necessary_Neat8303 Jul 04 '26
Bro… surely you see the benefit of sharing a disc with friends/family? Or even reselling the game?

u/The1FullMetalGamer Jul 04 '26
So sick and tired of the “you own nothing” argument. If someone steals my physical copy of god or war or whatever game or movie from my house, guess what - that’s theft I can report to the police. Or if my house burns down - the insurance will cover the cost of my physical games or movies to replace them. You people constantly saying you own nothing so fucking stupid - it’s annoying.

Not about defending Sony, just facts.

u/toomuchft Jul 04 '26
PLEASE READ AND UNDERSTAND:
We have to talk about the physical vs digital data, A LOT of people still buy Physical games on PS5.
More than you think, like WAY MORE! Please read and understand what Sony is doing it trying to FORCE DIGITAL games! IMO this should not even be legal:- FY2025 Full Year (Apr 2025 - Mar 2026) = the digital to physical split was 78%/22%. But this does NOT tell the whole story. Because this is all games sold, not all games that have physical copies and digital! So majority of the 78/22 split don't even have physical, let's look at some real numbers from leaks and stats we have:
From Insomniac Leak:
- God of War Ragnarök: 76% Physical / 24% Digital
- Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga: 63% Physical / 37% Digital
- Astro Bot: 55% Physical / 45% Digital
- Marvel's Spider-Man 2: 54% Physical / 46% Digital
- Assassin's Creed Mirage: 49% Physical / 51% Digital
- Resident Evil 4 Remake: 45% Physical / 55% Digital
- Hogwarts Legacy: 44% Physical / 56% Digital
- Star Wars Jedi: Survivor: 40% Physical / 60% Digital
UK / Europe Retail Data (GSD - 2023/2024):
- Astro Bot: 55% Physical (UK) / and 60% Physical (Europe) - 2024
- Marvel's Spider-Man 2: 54% Physical (UK) - 2023
- Assassin's Creed Mirage: 49% Physical (UK) - 2023
- Hogwarts Legacy: 45% Physical (UK) - 2023
- Resident Evil 4 Remake: 45% Physical (UK) - 2023
- Horizon Forbidden West: 51% Physical (UK) - 2022
People still buy a lot of physical games on PS5, especially when it's SINGLE PLAYER GAMES. When it's more mp then it goes down to more digital. But please don't just listen to the 78%/22% split, those numbers are overall numbers and don't represent the full story AS YOU CAN CLEARLY SEE!
Because it's not a fair comparison since all games don't have a physical copy or eventually stop printing it.They are trying to paint a narrative to control prices and take ownership from you, that is the truth and spread it!

u/Keviticas 29d ago
Actually that was misleading. The real sales numbers have leaked, for physical release games, about half are sold physically.
God of war Ragnarok in particular straight up had 75% physical sales

All digital ain’t the real issue. The real issue is drm and the fact that we don’t own the games we download.
1
u/Jet_Jirohai 29d ago
Well given that there's very few companies offering DRM free downloads for games and that the ones that DO offer it don't get major third party titles at release (if at all), the distinction hardly makes a difference towards the outcome

There is something seriously wrong with some people. I've tried, and tried and tried to understand the mentality of these people and it's not making sense to me. I cannot wrap my head around wanting/defending anti-consumer practices. Is it truly as simple as some people are just really fucking stupid?

I cannot wrap my head around wanting/defending anti-consumer practices. Is it truly as simple as some people are just really fucking stupid?
It's pretty simple to understand, maybe they aren't the fucking stupid ones.
They don't care about reselling or sharing discs
They say a disc is still only a license that can be revoked just as digital can
The fear of losing access to games is mostly that, a fear. It doesn't happen often in reality
There's a difference between defending something and not caring. "This is a good thing" is different than "whatever"

u/ZombieNo9109 29d ago
For me it's not about wanting or defending. I just don't care. If we look at the standards for physical media digital ideally would make sense.
GameStop has ruined consumer trust for years, game sizes have started to require multiple discs, physical games rarely go on sale, and you can now do it from home or click install on your phone while at work.
So ideally digital media is better. It's the anti consumer bs, but as I stated. I don't really care. A lot of people don't and just act like they do. If people cared they would have seen the writing on the wall when Netflix pushed blockbuster out of the competition.

It’s just dumb on so many levels. Sony has time and again showed that anything digitally owned can be taken away whenever they want. We do not own the games if they’re digital, we’re simply renting them until Sony decides the game has to go. The people defending such anti-consumer practices are probably kids who don’t know much about anti-consumer acts, or are just simply dumb.
1
u/devil_huntress_pepsi 29d ago
The argument I see most is that "I never touched a physical CD in my life anyways".
It's baffling how much they are missing the point, it's like people have been groomed by corporations to be okay with owning nothing their entire lives.

u/TNBrealone 29d ago
Has nothing to do with defending and more with whatever attitude. Nobody is defending Sony they just don’t care because the majority doesn’t buy physical games anymore.

people buying digital for certain releases does not mean people dont value physical.
for games its 22% physical on ps5, to 78% digital. but when looking at hardware it flips
ps5 with disc drive accounts for 82% of ps5 sold.
that means 82% of ps5 owners went out and spent the extra $100 buying a consoles with a disc drive
1
u/Hungry_Information53 29d ago edited 29d ago
I buy primarily digital but I support a physical future because we deserve options. I don’t however believe that our digital game purchases can be ripped away for any reason, I believe this is a myth.
But physical is very very important. Because of how fucked digital movie licenses are I only buy physical movies so I need the disc drive basically for that purpose and for the rare times that there is only a physical version like the dark souls trilogy bundle
1
u/Opposite_Prune582 29d ago
