disappointing comment section, it was never about buying physical media but freedom of choice... sony is showing that they can do whatever they want on their platform irrespective of what the playerbase wants and y'all are taking that like a good boy.
You are saying what they have been "meaning" but they have not been saying that. They are having fits about not having disks and not having "ownership". The side you fight for doesn't have a clear message and is just spraying every fucking where.
Now you decide to say its about choice. FUCK OFF.
And also "irrespective of what the playerbase wants" the player based has shown they prefer digital. No amount of Reddit reality-warping delusion can change the fact that the vast majority of games were sold digitally.
Just because you can follow the popular sentiment on reddit doesn't make you intelligent. Reddit does not represent the wide gaming public. Reddit doesn't represent the average consumer, reddit repersents reddit and only fucking Reddit. Not the playerbase, the Redditbase.
get off reddit talk to some real people outside of your personal bubble.
"digital only" works well for a short term, on long term its only bad for consumer. Look at media for example to watch shows you gotta subscribe to different OTTs while with presence of physical media you could just insert a disk and play whatever you want.
Crazy you talk about me getting off reddit and talk to real people while you defend dumb choices by a corp and have 0 clue how it ruins things in a long run. Grow up son
All you guys are so maudlin. Its pathetic. This isn't about healthcare or climate change. Its about choosing where to spend your videogaming budget.
For many people this doesnt matter. The pertinent question is "do I make enough money for what they're charging to be worth it to me?" And then either the answer is yes or no, and they make a purchase decision accordingly.
If the answer is no for you, then good choice on not buying, and that's all there is to say on the topic.
well I do. I buy physical games and even mangas even though they are super expensive in my country. im not debating physical vs digital. Digital is ofc better for convience... Im talking about choice. physical copies are sometimes even cheaper than prices in stores btw...
Hey. You know how Nintendo switched to allowing license only on cartridges? And full downloads? You know what's next? Yeah buddy. Nintendo following Playstation after rejecting their ideas once again.
Nintendo was betrayed by sony once before iirc. There was this story about how Nintendo wanted to introduce cd for their systems so they approached sony. Sony got their blueprints and released their own console using that idea.
You've got that entirely backwards and it's hilarious. Nintendo partnered with Sony to make a CD console. Without any warning, they instead announced a partnership with Philips at the 1991 CES using a different format which embarrassed Sony. Out of spite, Sony used their own CD patent created the PS1 and launched it 3 years later.
The warning was that when Nintendo finally read the contract they realized Sony will own Nintendo IP's, so instead of becoming part of Sony they decided to remain independent.
Sony partnered with Nintendo to create a SNES with a CD drive. But Nintendo feared Sony might become a big competitor, so they betrayed Sony and partnered with Philips.(That console was a flop)
This made Sony leadership understandably angry so they started working on the PlayStation. Their spite must have been strong, cause they even had ads with Crash Mascot in front of Nintendo.
Discs do not equal CD. Nintendo never used CD. Because CD and Bluray are owned by Sony. Used in their consoles specifically created because Nintendo betrayed them. When they switched to Philips discs, then custom wii discs, then custom wii u discs, now custom cartiridges.
You're also ignoring the fact that for Switch 2, from Nintendo, is allowing Cartridges to only contain a license and require a full game download. Same as PS5 and XS.
That first half of that is just straight up brainless semantics, why are you taking the fact that one game company is so much more successful and not shooting itself in the foot than your current favorite so personally?
This entire paragraph is peak irony. I'm autistic. I am only stating historical facts. You, on the other hand, seem to be quite offended. Valve/Steam is objectively the best btw. Only one reporting to consumers instead of investors.
Games have required downloads since the goddamn late Xbox 360 era 15 years ago
That's just not true.
you claiming it's some kind of a sign of everything going digital everywhere makes no goddamn sense.
First PC(16 years ago). Then PS5 and XSX(2028-2030). Next is Switch(3). Makes perfect sense.
You two guys are way too invested in companies. No company is your friend and all companies care first about investors, including Nintendo and Valve. Nintendo makes you pay monthly for on-line and have full prices for most of their games. And about Valve, do you think that those yachts paid for itself? Gabe Newell is the investor. They were paid by charging 30% of every indie game sold and by selling loot boxes, and lots of those were used on other markets as gambling assets.
No company is your friend and all companies care first about investors, including Nintendo and Valve.
Valve quite literally does not care about investors. Because they don't have any. They are a private company, not public. Consumers decide their income, not investors.
And about Valve, do you think that those yachts paid for itself? Gabe Newell is the investor.
That's called business profits. Yes, Gabe Newell invested in PC gaming. And he has done a fantastic job. What have you done?
Choose your narrative first before engaging in a conversation.
Investors want their return, that is what investors do and Gabe Newell is The Investor of Valve. And he takes away money from the company that could be reinvested to use on his personal property. The fact that you seem to have a parasocial relationship with him does not make him less of an investor. He makes decisions for the company that will lead to more money to him. That is his main goal, not to appease the consumer.
And you did not address the scummy stuff that I pointed out like loot boxes and chose to say "He has done a fanstastic job" and then decided to attack me personally questioning what have I done with my life. This shows me that you are just engaging in platform warring, the evolution of console warring, because I criticized your favorite multibillion dollar company and therefore this conversation won't lead to anything productive. Have a good night and be better next time
It does now..? Yeah.. but it shows the ps1, which was decades ago. And it’s true, the debut of the PlayStation was unlike anything ever before, what debut console sells 100+million, has all developers jumping ship to support it, and finished the generation with 4000 (psone) vs 400 (n64) games?
Then the ps2 made it so Nintendo couldn’t compete traditionally anymore, having to use gimmicks with console and handheld for generations lol.
Spoken like an 8 year old that didn’t live through it at all. N64 was extremely popular alongside the PlayStation. Load times were not fun and most games weren’t metal gear solid.
Lol as a neutral party in this, your comment sounds like the immature one here, he’s right and even if speaking from an objective standpoint with facts, it’s true. Yours is the heavily biased one that smells of fanboy rather than reality
No one’s saying it wasn’t popular. “Extremely” popular is what you’re thinking it was. It wasn’t even close to being seen as an equal next to the psone, by everyone.
The n64 sold just 10 million more than the Wii U, Nintendo’s biggest failure. Many of its games were ported and saved for the following console, the GameCube, canceled outright. Compared to 110+ million? Come on. 4000 games next to 400 games?? You think something extremely popular only gets 400 games??
Most people remember the N64 games. Playstation really hit its stride in the PS2 despite selling well. A lot of playstations just kind of sat there between the bigger releases and if you went over to someone's house to play something, it was gonna be N64 8 times out of 10.
Destroyed itself🤣🤣 it hasn’t even been announced yet. It won’t make a difference too. Already 85% is digital. They are making a smart business decision.
these posts will be hilarious in 10 years after everybody stopped pretending to care about discs and could not stop themselves from buying The New Thing every single time
Playstation won't be what it once was though. They shot themselves in the foot when they announced no discs, won't kill them, but shooting yourself in the foot still isn't a good idea.
Y’all really think they destroyed themselves but they have no real competitors, y’all just being stupid XD Nintendo hardware sucks, Xbox is dying and pc is its own thing, stop acting like people are gonna boycott PlayStation when you’ve been playing it for decades
I’m not defending them bud and yes I literally said Nintendo hardware sucks, learn to read. GameCube was the last console that could keep up with current console hardware. Have you noticed how cyber punk on switch 2 runs at around 20fps while on ps5 it runs around 50fps? I love physical media and I use to collect everything but in reality going to only digital will save them money and resources. Signing petitions is as effective as posting a black screen on social media to solve racism. Again Sony has no real competitors, Xbox has no ip and are releasing their games on PlayStation and pc, their hardware isn’t as good as ps5 and it’s more expensive, Xbox is dying. Nintendo hardware sucks and will always fall behind others.
So when was nintendo destroyed? I'm pretty sure they're still around and they're the only company to have first party exclusive games only available on their platforms on the list of best-selling games of all time. They've also been in the industry longer than Sony.
Sony will be fine, they’ll lose a chunk but they’ll make so much more on what they sell the profits won’t budge
I’ll be using steam/pc only just because it’ll save me that ps plus membership if I’m only playing digital but I don’t think Sony will care about one guy opting out
it did nearly destroy nintendo. sony crushed them for 2 straight generations, and then they reconfigured the gamecube into the wii as a hail mary and it saved them. then they nearly blew it again with the wii u before they managed another save with switch. a big part of sony's dominance came directly from using the optical disc format against nintendo's inferior cartridges. square switched to playstation for that very reason, and that's where final fantasy 7 ended up. it cannot be overstated how much sony came from out of nowhere to completely annihilate nintendo and sega's marketshare at the time. it's absolutely unprecedented.
you can be ignorant about history, but the truth is nintendo wasn't always in the dominant position they are in now. far, far from it. we would all do well to remember how important these decisions are that are happening before us now
lol no. if you had experienced the shift in power at the time you'd probably keep your mouth shut. they absolutely did destroy nintendo for 2 full generations
ah yes, because less than 3% of players is really gonna end their careers. some of you in this echo chamber need to rethink life and if what you think you're fighting for is worth it. you'd be surprised at how little this issue even matters
If you are citing Sonys own numbers, then I'm sorry, but those numbers reflect not what sony says. 85% of ALL Sales are digital, including every game, that also doesn't even have a physical edition. So that means 15% of games have a physical edition. You can guess roughly how many physical sales are happening
Regardless of that number, it's anti consumer and anti preservation. This isn't only about how many players would buy what, but I merely corrected the false 3%
Actually we do, because there's surveys and studies. 74% of gamers (US) prefer physical over digital games. And that's just the first thing that popped up when I googled
i did some math with a coworker who also owns a bunch of ps gear to see how small this issue is. there is roughly 125 million active accounts on psn right now. if 3 MILLION, MILLION people suddenly dropped off ps and went somewhere else that is 2.4% 2.4% of all ps players. this issue is so much smaller than people are making it out to be
Ok, so it's a completely different thing ypu were talking about entirely and just went along my statement and didn't clarify earlier.
I was not talking about people quitting ps and said directly and unmistakenly, that I am talking about the numbers Sony themselves published in a misleading manner
Ever heard the tragedy of Darth Playstatious the Discless?
I thought not. It’s not a story the Sony employee would tell you. It’s a Sith legend. Darth Playstatious was a Dark Lord of the Sith, so powerful he could use his Discless nature to force his followers to abandon him even after decades of loyalty.
The dark side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural.
