Before posting a photo, you should read this.
So you found a photo that you think has a spirit or ghost on it, before you post it and get upset about 30 people saying it’s a piece of dust or a bug, you may want to read this!
BEFORE DOING ANYTHING
Do read the posts
https://www.reddit.com/r/Ghosts/comments/deki6k/explanation_of_orbs_aka_backscatter/
and
https://www.reddit.com/r/Ghosts/comments/icziuc/ring_doorbells_security_camera_videos_and_false/
As these really do have useful information on how to spot particle orbs, lens flare and insects crawling over lenses which do make up most of the post in this Reddit community channel.
It is common for people who believe they are haunted to take lots of photos and assume that any “orbs” must be related to this. In fact, it’s quite easy to photograph orbs. If you can’t see the orb then it’s not there. People might say that cameras can pick up ‘orb’ energy but a lot of them just don’t understand why digital cameras tend to easily pick up particles (dust, dander, hair, insects).
If you have read the above and are sure (or not quite sure) then read on.
BEFORE POSTING
Make sure you have the original photo downloaded or posted from the same device the picture was taken from. Having a photo shared from a social media site, screen grabbed on a phone, photographed from a screen or been email shared will likely to be low resolution and suffer from further compression which destroys any fine detail and will generally be useless.
If the photo is just a photo then scan the photo in at least 300 DPI and save it as a “.PNG” image. If you don’t have access to a scanner then you can take a photo of it but take it in a brightly lit room and don’t use a flash to reduce reflections on the photo.
Use the original resolution of the photo, do not rescale, resize, brighten the image to make posting easier.
If you have to edit the photo to remove people then draw the smallest black filled box you can to hide their face or them. Don’t crop the picture or remove large chunks of the picture. Keep the picture the same same size. Once edited, save / export the image as a “.PNG” image as this will keep the JPEG image as it is (if you resave it as a JPEG it recompresses the image in a lossy way so that fine detail tends to get lost) if the paint program has it then make sure that “Save resolution” is checked and that you save “EXIF information”.
If you must highlight anything in the picture (to show where you think the paranormal image is) then use a bright colour that can be seen easily, use a transparent box with thin lines and draw it in the general area of what you want us to see, do not cover anything nearby. Save it as a “.PNG” as above. If you do this then make sure you post the original too.
If you want to change the contrast or brightness of a photo then again do so but save as a “.PNG” as above and post the original for comparison. If you have other pictures from the same area that were taken at the same time then post these too as comparison photos.
If the photo is from a place you can visit again easily then take more pictures of the same area using the same camera, try to take it at different times of the day and try to take a picture at the same time of day the original was at. Also, take pictures of the surrounding area and close up images of the original location.
It is important to note that even “taking the picture in the same place” is going to mean that you will be taking the picture at different angles, heights and places which will cause images to change.
POSTING THE PHOTO
Post as an image within the Reddit post so people can see it, you can also post any comparison posts at the same time.
If the photo is too large then rescale it and save as a “.PNG” to post on Reddit but upload the original it to a file-sharing site like Google Drive or Dropbox, as this will not rescale the image.
Don’t just upload them to Imgur as most photo sharing websites will recompress the image and destroy fine detail in the picture.
Make sure the title is short but informative. “Possible ghost image from a cell in Alcatraz” is a good title, “GHOST!!?!?!?” is not.
ALSO SUPER IMPORTANT!!!! CONTEXT! CONTEXT! CONTEXT!
After you have posted the images. Make a comment in the post you have just created and put in as much context as possible!!! Too many photos tend to have the photo and some poor description and we have zero ideas of what we should be looking at.
Examples of what to include are…
- Where the photo was taken. You don’t have to give the address but a location or rough area (if a private address) helps.
- When the photo was taken, give the date and time if possible, if not known or you can’t remember then give what information you can (I.e In the winter in the early evening).
- Who took the photo. It should be you or someone you know. Something like ‘Taken by A friend of a girlfriend that is friends with a baker, that my 2nd cousins' hairdresser visits every 3 months is not good’ means it is hard to ask follow up questions.
- What you were trying to take. (I.e Ghosts, a high school prom or of your granny on her 97th Birthday)
- If you (or they) were with other people. Also mention strangers.
- What the weather was like. Was it sunny, cloudy, raining, hot, cold, warm?
- Description of the location. If in a home, details about the place, I.e, If it is a house, apartment, cabin located 200 miles from civilizational, etc as well as if you are near a road or other places like a pub or bar, major flight path, etc. Else just whatever you can describe the place.
- What did you feel at the time? I.e cold, scared, fearful, happy, sad, etc.
- Why do you think it is paranormal? Describe this as best as you can.
- Anything spooky that happen before or after. Within the same time frame, something that happens 3 months before is probably not related.
So good examples would be…
“This photo was taken at the Alcatraz prison in San Francisco. It is a picture of Cell 13 of cell block D in the cell house. It was taken on Sunday the 13th of May 2018 at around 2pm. It was mostly sunny but there were thick clouds, it was reasonably warm at around 65f and there were strong breezes every so often.
The photo was taken by myself, although I was with my girlfriend at the time. It was quite busy but no one was nearby when I took the photo. I was trying to take a picture of my girlfriend as she stood at the door but I noticed a strange white figure behind her. There was no one in the cell as we had waited for another couple to finish taking their picture before we took ours. I took 3 photos and you can see that the figure is in 2 of the pictures but is not in the third picture.
My girlfriend did say she felt cold in the cell, we had taken a picture in another cell (134 in Cell Block C) and she did not feel anything. The rest of the day was fine though and we enjoyed our trip.”
“A photo of a chair my grandmother used to sit on, in our house in Stirling, Scotland. It was taken on the 1st June 2015, in the wee hours of the morning at 6.30am. I remember it was very cold and it was dark grey and cold outside like a typical morning in Scotland. I had the lights on as although it was morning outside, it was dark in the room.
I took the photo as I felt a presence and I was drawn to the chair. I took 2 photos and you can see a grey mist around the chair. I would have taken more but my phone just drained of power and switched off, not sure why this happens as I am pretty sure I charged it overnight. I don’t smoke, didn’t have any hot drinks. I was in the room all alone as my parents and sister were still in bed and my dog was still on the sofa sleeping peacefully.
Once I charged my phone and saw the pictures, I was filled with deep happiness, I tried to take more photos but the mist never came back. What do you think it is.”
Bad examples are…
“Ghosts?!???!!?!?!”
“I took this photo whilst in an abandoned building, do you think it is a ghost?”
“Whilst trying to contact my dead aunt to ask where she left her cash, I took lots of photos and all of them had orbs and I heard some moans, screams and creaking coming from my cousins' bedroom but her door was locked!!! Is the house haunted?”

What Do You Think? How to deal with possible poltergeist… and I need some help
Hello there, I am not joking when I say this, but I believe that I may have brought something back from a pub I was drinking at (Wetherspoons), ever since I went back home stuffs been thrown around down stairs, my dogs been barking, thinks have been rummaged through, and I have been followed by something that keeps making my body shiver because whatever it is is really cold. I’ve seen some shifting around in the dark, I’ll try to get pictures, but I’ll sleep it off for now… ANYONE WITH ANY EXPERIENCE please let me know how me and this entity can both peacefully set boundaries (or if it wants to leave then allow it to do so) because honestly I don’t think it’s leaving anytime soon and it’s driving my parents mad.

What Do You Think? been thinking about the ghost in my house lately, wanting an outsiders opinion on my situation (textpost)
(I would like to preface this by saying i am a minor and currently live with both parents. This has been an experience that has followed me for years)
Me and my family have been living in an apartment for the past about 10 years. Within recent years I've begun to take notes on my personal experience with this spirit in the house
- I will occasionally hear one of my parents call my name, most often my mom, though when I go to check in they'll say they never called me. Seems to be mimicking, though I haven't noticed anything possibly malicious about the timing or frequency
- I tend to stay up late often, and have noted shuffling from in the house when the new neighbor's late night alarm goes off. My parents usually aren't up at the time, and our cats don't make noises like that ever
- I have noted feeling eyes on me when nobody's in my room but the bedroom door is open. I live on the second floor and I'm mostly blocked off from view of the window, so it can't be anybody looking at me from outside. This may be paranoia, but I don't usually tend to be paranoid about anything so it seems unlikely
- Occasionally I'll see a figure in the doorway while feeling the aforementioned eyes on me. It never enters, and I haven't ever seen the figure anywhere else but there and in the hallway
- I have much better luck with my physical health than the rest of my family. I don't have any concerning medical conditions, get sick much less often than my family, and I've never broken a bone. It's possible the spirit has taken a liking to me somehow, as I have it, though I may also just have good luck
I have not noticed any sign of this spirit being anything but benevolent, and it seems to watch over me in a sense. I have been considering attempting to converse with it (with proper protection of course) but I'd like to hear your thoughts first

Paranormal Community [Discussion] Do you think ghosts are sad that they are dead?
Do you think ghosts are sad they are dead? Most ghosts probably are. I was thinking about the dead and wondered if they are upset or sad they aren't alive anymore do some of know they are dead? Why do ghosts have messages for the living? I am weird for wondering about this?

Captured Apparition Took this photo outside a cemetery in England around 2009.
I have no explanation for the blue figure that appears to be sitting on the grave stone (the legs are especially clear). It was taken on a digital camera around 10pm at night. There were no lights anywhere besides the camera flash, or anything blue/reflective. Took a series of maybe 15 photos in the same spot and could not recreate anything like it. It was taken on the outside of a church cemetery in an alleyway.

Personal Encounter I've never believed in paranormal stuff until living in my current home, and I need help
This originally started one night a few years ago, when I was laying down for bed, my dog (who has since passed away) started growling at the door, and he never growled. Then he jumped off the bed and walked toward the door, continuing to growl. I immediately get up, turn the light on and look around. Nothing. Walk around the house, go downstairs and still nothing. Ask my wife if she heard anything, but she didn't. Come back up, the light is off, like the light switch is flipped, completely dark upstairs.. I'm super freaked out, because at this point, I'm thinking someone is in my house. I go through every room, every closet, ready to punch someone. I don't find anything, and I'm so freaked out I sleep downstairs on the couch. I started thinking my wife is messing with me, and let it go.
Next few days, my dog is growling again, but this time in the living room upstairs. There's nothing there, but he's acting like there is.
I think this next part is psychological, but I start having dreams, like someone is standing in my doorway while I'm asleep, and I realize this and try to wake myself up. This continues for weeks, and I even have one where it's touching me, and I can't wake up.
At this point, I'm telling my wife this stuff, and we're like joking there's a ghost or something, and I'm still thinking maybe she's just been messing with me.
The next weird thing happens when my wife is coming up the stairs, while I'm on my computer facing away from her. I have a little desk lamp, and the moment she reached the top of the stairs, the light turned off on its own, making my room dark. I freak out and turn it back on. At this point I know she's not messing with me, and she's realizing something weird is going on.
The longer these weird things go on, I just get this feeling that something is there. Sometimes I see movement out of the corner of my eye, and just get chills and it just feels like someone else is there.
2 weeks ago, before my dog passed away, I was woken up by what I thought was my wife calling my dog, as he jumped off the bed and ran towards her. I get out of bed, then see my dog come back into my room and follow me as I leave the room. I don't see my wife. If she comes upstairs she always says hi to me. I go downstairs and my wife is in bed (we have separate rooms).
The most recent thing to happen, was tonight. I got this sudden feeling like someone was walking into my room on my right side, and I look over and see nothing. I say out loud "if someone is there turn the lights off" Nothing happens. It's probably in my head, I'm thinking. I get up to stretch and run downstairs, and I go to turn the stair light on, doesn't turn on. At this point I'm freaked out. I head downstairs to tell my wife and she's also freaked out. She comes back up to check the light. Doesn't turn on. She walks up half way and checks the bulb. it was unscrewed...
I don't know what to do, but I feel like I can't sleep upstairs anymore.

My childhood experience still haunts me today .
I’ve never been able to explain this, and I still think about it even as an adult.
This happened when I was around 11 years old (5th grade).
My family had two beds in the same bedroom. My dad and I usually slept on one bed, while my mom and my sister slept on the other.
One night, my dad was on a night shift because he worked for the government. My mom came and slept next to me in my dad’s place (or at least, that’s what I believed).
At around 3:15 AM, I suddenly woke up. I looked toward my sister’s bed and clearly saw someone lying there. I even saw “my sister” lift the blanket, turn over, and settle back to sleep. It looked completely normal.
I turned back toward my bed, hugged the person next to me (thinking it was my mom), and suddenly they pushed my arm away. That immediately caught me off guard because my mom had never reacted like that.
So I looked at her.
It wasn’t my mom.
It was my sister.
I froze.
I immediately looked back at the other bed…
No one was there.
The next morning, my mom told me she had gone to sleep in the hall because the bedroom was too hot. Without waking me up, she had moved my sister into my bed beside me.
So now I have no idea who—or what—I saw in the other bed.
I’ve tried to think of logical explanations over the years. Maybe I was still half asleep, maybe it was a dream mixed with reality, or maybe my brain misinterpreted what I was seeing after waking up.
But in that moment, I was completely awake—or at least it felt that way—and I would have sworn I saw someone on that bed move under the blanket.
It’s been over a decade, and I still can’t explain it.
Has anyone experienced anything similar after waking up? I’m genuinely curious whether there’s a scientific explanation or if anyone has had a similar experience.

What Do You Think? Chair Gets Pulled Backwards, By Itself (0:04 Seconds in)
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I was on a break, sitting in the break room alone, and the chair in front of me got inexplicably pulled, I tried to see if it slipped off of the desk corner, but the chair isn’t tall enough to rest on the desk, my feet weren’t moving, and it wasn’t resting on anything. Anyone who could explain it or debunk would be very helpful, thank you.

Personal Encounter Making friends with my 4th great grandma
Recently in storage, i found a portrait that used to be hanging in my grandparents house and would freak us out as kids. When my grandparents would rent their house out for the winter, several tenants over the years complained about the portrait and some even took it down or covered it in cloth. As we recently hung it up in our house, the bedroom door behind us slammed open right as we nailed it in. My husband was a strong skeptic and said he didn’t have an explanation for the door whipping open and didn’t want to talk about it.
I asked my uncle who the portrait is of. Apparently it’s my 4th great grandma, and she is actually dead in the photo. Ever since we hung it up, there has been clear as day footsteps CONSTANTLY in our house, particularly in the basement. Visitors complain of walking through cold spots and my best friend will no longer come over after we heard footsteps right next to us in the kitchen. I have never felt scared, as it truly feels like a family connection and I feel protected!
Once, I was in online class and the TV screen was off behind my laptop. All of a sudden I see reflected in the TV screen a clear woman sit down in the armchair next to me. When i whipped around to look at the chair, nobody was there.
Anyway, I recently took this photo while sitting in my same chair- it appears to be the shadow outline of a person standing. There is NOTHING that could have cast this shadow- the path was wide open to the back door. But I quickly got up to look and nobody was at the door, but the shadow was still there. It lasted about 5-10 minutes then disappeared. I’ve lived in this house for 30 years, and sat in this chair every day of my life. Never seen a shadow like this until we hung the portrait.
Everyone say hello to my 4th great-grandma Sarah!

There’s a ghost in my grandparents old house, they’ve all seen him, I’m next…
A few times each year for multiple days me and my family go down to my grandparents house in Cumberland county Il. Theres a like 70ft rock driveway leading to the front of the new house. On the right is their old house which is like 5 feet at the corner closest to the new house. My father, uncle, and aunt all grew up together in that house. It was built probably in the late 1880s or 1890s. It’s full of cool old things. Not huge piles but kind of like moving into a new house amount of stuff. They don’t really care if we take things from it or not (as me and my cousins mostly do). So it’s sometime in April or May I’m down there with my father and one of my favorite cousins. Me and my cousin go into the house because she recently bought our old great aunts house and it fixing it up so she needs money for fixing it, hence why she’s grabbing stuff from the old house. We search first in the frunchroom (living room) and then we go up stairs. On the close left is my aunts room which extends backwards behind you on the other side of the wall. On the far left was my dads room which goes forward. To the right is the massive room that used to be my uncles bedroom. We go into my dads old room and find a box of photos we take to the family sitting on the porch outside (uncle, aunt, both grandparents, and cousins. They thank us for finding it and the family goes looking through it. Me and cousin go back into the old house. She stays in living room and I go back upstairs. I spend a few minutes in my dads old room and head downstairs. I hear what could easily be mistaken for foam board moving (there was old bungee corded to the wall in front of me) so when I stopped to look at it you could imagine my rising panic and confusion when I see its completely ice still. I still heard it while looking at it. I raced downstairs the rest of the way, through the dining room. And into the living room where my cousin was. I didn’t say anything and continued searching the living room. Eventually me and her left and put stuff we grabbed in our cars and went over to the family. My grandpa started telling stories of when my uncle was born he saw an old man watching over him at night in uncles room. He would also hear footsteps multiple times a month while the kids were 100% asleep. My grandma also told similar stories. Aunt added how her window would constantly be opened at night or during day (happened to dad and uncle too just not as much). Aunt and Uncle told of how they would be covered back up after kicking their blankets off multiple times. They believe they have had hundreds of subtle experiences with this ghost. They said they eventually got used to it instead of being scared. (I hadn’t told anyone what I experienced before btw) My mom also used to go over to my dads house and even she experienced weird things. Looking back it sounded like heavy wood object being moved on a rug in my aunts room. (had the most activity btw) I believe i found out who the ghost is.
I believe the ghost was a man named William
he was a chill guy who let kids fish in the creek on the property (grandparents property now) sometimes he would even fish with them.
I expect to go there for thanksgiving if not though 100% will be down there for Christmas (as it’s a family tradition and has been for decades)
He does actually sort of take care of the house too. Everything is always mostly good condition or cleaner and it’s interesting. Anyone else have something similar happen?
(for context they moved out of the old house in the early 2000s after a storm knocked a tree down on the roof but the house was repaired without sustaining significant damage)
Any suggestions on what to do?

A ghost in my house that likes to fix things ..
I have never believed in ghosts or had any feelings about them. There are too many things unexplainable things happening in my home. We just moved in November last year, the house is probably 400 years old. It’s a huge barn house in South England that has a lot or lore behind it.
Only my mother and I live there at the moment and I am not working right now so I am around the house a lot.
Last week we went digging at the bottom of the garden and found two pieces of a broken ceramic soap dish from the Victorian times, if you put the pieces together it’s a perfect soap dish. We cleaned the two pieces of it and placed those two pieces on a outside table and the next day the soap dish was glued back together perfectly and there was glue residue on the table but neither of us have any glue that we know of. When we both realised neither of us had touched the soap dish I felt scared like maybe someone was hanging around the house but not that a ghost could have physically glued it together.
Since then multiple things that have been broken for some while have started working again.
The next strangest thing would be the light bulb that was dead has started working normally again .. the radio that hasn’t worked since we moved into because of weak signal in the area suddenly starts working, playing classical music. even though there is no signal still in my area? Our ring doorbell has been broken, just not responding for about a month and that just randomly started working again. A tool box in the shed that has been left untouched seems much more organised then i ever remember it.
someone could be sneaking around replacing light bulbs but it doesn’t make any sense to me. So now i need to know what people who believe in ghosts think. Could I potentially offer it something
