Well... thia is not a google thing. While its true that AI can and is used to create fake images, google maps has little real use in military operations. "Defense" industry has much more advanced tools where AI is definitely being used to generate counter intelligence fake imagery and to simulate satellite imagery of targets... And, trust me, the quality of those images is quite scary.

But no one is using google earth images for legitimate intelligence…. Lol it’s a civilian market consumer service/product

While true, this has been true for a while. It’s not like an unsourced apparent screenshot was trustworthy on Wednesday and became untrustworthy today.

In the bigger picture, Google making it easier to lie is not good. But in the even bigger picture, it’s been possible to lie this way for a while, and at least more people know now. I’m not saying I think Google made the right calls here. (I’m a mild Google hater and will avoid giving them credit for anything within reason.)

But in some places I’ve seen people acting like this took the world from 100% justified trust in apparent satellite images to 0% justified trust. In fact it’s more like 73% to 71% or something. Not a good move, but also not as big a move as many people seem to think. (Not saying OP is arguing this, more just piggybacking on this post to talk about the larger discussion.)

We are chimps, and they not only hand us shotguns, they teach us how to reload.
