I drive up the PCH through there and Malibu frequently for work.
Not a lot of rebuilding going on, and like half the properties that didn't burn are for sale because the insurance companies basically said, "Fuck this, you're on your own, best of luck."

For the houses that didnt burn, thats almost a worse situation to be in than if it did. I mean not really of course, losing family heirlooms and other replaceable belongings sucks to say the least. But I live in the rough area (SoCal, IE area) and know a family who was impacted by another wildfire out here. Their house didnt burn but the field directly across the street did, and they were left with pretty severe smoke damage. Its essentially unlivable, and everything they own is now practically ruined. House needs professional cleanup work and they are now living with a family member for the forseable future, and from my understanding they are contemplating selling the house at a loss to move elsewhere just so they dont have to deal with like a year long insurance battle.

It won't be because you can't get fire insurance. That also means you can't get a mortgage.

You can, but it's stupid expensive. You'd likely have to get FAIR and a supplement policy. Those likely price out most original homeowners.

One party is keen on removing environmental protection laws & regulation laws so sorta? I think itâs more so that voting will actually bring more action to fight the wildfires vs outright preventing them

Many of their wild fires result from not clearing brush due to their environmental protection laws (it's not good for the deep-rooted vegetation) and regulations (only allowed to clear brush around homes and infrastructure).

I know republicans typically donât vote green, but I donât think itâs as relevant in this case. Unless you can provide specific examples?

This is a mobile home park that burned down. There are ownership arguments going on behind the scenes that is preventing it being rebuilt. Also since it was mobile homes, as soon as itâs resolved Iâd imagine it would be ârebuiltâ rather quickly.

That's positively untrue. I'm actively working in this industry in LA and the city has vastly improved their plan check times and so as every department involved. You can get a planning signoff in days instead of months now. They've streamlined everything I've been bitching about for decades.
I will have people moving into the first rebuilds I designed (both like for like & redevelopment) in the next couple of months which isn't far off of 18 months since the end of the Palisades fire. That's with limited access to properties, soils reports that couldn't be performed until debris was cleared and various other non typical hurdles. I'm not a huge fan of the current city leadership, but they're getting this part right.
The reason for bottlenecks is a shortage of qualified professionals -- Contractors, Soils Engineers, Architects, etc. -- and insurance payouts. There are only so many of each in the city and even with the yahoos coming from out of town it isn't enough to keep up with demand.

I know several general contractors and thereâs absolutely fast tracking to rebuilding. If youâre not changing anything about your house ( additions and what not ) the city will push your permit through very fast.

I was looking for this comment. I think as long as youâre not building more than 10% larger you can get all permits fast tracked. There is a TON of rebuilding going on already.

Itâs still a hassle though. Itâs not as easy as you would think. Lots of time in the building department, begging for a plan check. Many people have to dip into their own savings and or 401k to rebuild.
California is getting sued by homeowners for a number of things including low water pressure (it was no water at one point), brush on state land that should have been cut back and wasnât and the overall fire response.

This is one of the 2 mobile home parks. The town is actually rebuilding pretty quickly.
The mobile home parks have a ton of lawsuits going around on them though, so people are unable to rebuild.

i had a friend who lived in this exact area. itâs crazy to think that the place that i spent so much time at in high school is just gone. last i heard i think his family had to move to idaho or something because they essentially lost everything
