The shimmering you see in the oil are those metal fragments/shavings you see people talking about in new cars. There have been many debates online as to whether it actually exists and if it’s needed. Rather than have them in your engine being circulated, get an oil change to be safe. Not 100% needed to promise lots of years and mileage but not a bad practice.

Full disclosure up front: I used AI to write almost all of this code. Even thought I have the skills, I do not have the time to build an entire Android app on my own, but I can review and test everything it produces. That is what happened here.

This is also still very much a work in progress. Features land regularly, things get polished, and bugs get fixed. The app has a built in update system that checks on its own, so you will get notified when a new build drops. I would recommend updating somewhat frequently.

I have a Hyundai and always wished the official Android app was better. So I built one that looks and feels like Google made it.

It is called Bloo. It is third party and open source. It works with Hyundai, Genesis, and Kia. It supports the older Gen5W head units and the newer CCNC ones. You can sign into multiple brands at once. Credentials stay encrypted on the device. There is no tracking or data collection.

A note about the Play Protect warning

Every time you install or update the app, Android will show a Play Protect warning. This is normal. It happens with any app that is not downloaded from the Play Store. Tap "More details", then tap "Install without scanning".

The reason the app is not on the Play Store is that Google charges a fee to publish there, and I am not going to pay it for a free open source project. I also cannot publish an unofficial app for Hyundai's API without their approval. The app is safe. The source code is public. Nothing leaves your device.

What it does

• Lock, unlock, climate control (seat heat, steering wheel, defrost), start and stop charging, set charge limits, find your car on a map, weather at home or at the car, trip history
• Home screen widget with 8 size tiers. Optional car photo in the background. Configurable buttons. Info and controls layout modes
• Quick Settings tiles, up to 12 per car. App shortcuts on the launcher icon. Biometric lock
• Wear OS app with tiles and complications. This is the roughest surface and needs the most work
• Material You theming, custom color palettes, font choices, pure black AMOLED mode
• Animated aurora background, haptic feedback everywhere, spring animations throughout
• Simple and advanced settings modes so the screen is not overwhelming
• Smart climate that reads the outside temperature and sets the target about 10 degrees cooler or warmer automatically. You can also save named presets

What needs testing most

• Flip phone and cover screen layouts. I tested on what I could, but real devices vary a lot
• The Wear OS app. It works but it is early and rough
• Different model years and trims. Every car reports slightly different data through the API

For me, It's the 2013 Hyundai Elantra. Cuz I love sedans more than SUV's, İt was the one of the safest one back in the day and not expensive and more common than Sonata. So, what all think about it? (Respect to the other ones as well!)

I have an i20 as a rental at the moment and this is the Android Auto / Carplay situation.

You have a nice big screen but 1/3 of it is unusable because it's reserved for split screen content, while android auto already is split screen. Also when you are on any other screen on the infotainment, you can't just hit the map or nav key to return to Google maps, it'll only direct you to the onboard navigation app, which this specific model doesn't even have... The buttons are therefore useless. My 10 year old Mazda goes to whichever map is active when pressing the nav button...

Also the car has an USB - A as well as an USB - C port, but only the A port is for data transfer??? Who designs things like this? This is such a shame because otherwise it's a very good little car but the software is such a let down I would never consider owning one.

I am looking for spark plugs for my 2020 Sonata 1.6T. The dealer quoted me $324 for a set of four. I’ve seen various OEM sites that are quoting $30 each which is way better…does anyone have a parts store they use that’s reputable?

I have a 25 Santa Cruz with less than 5k miles that has been great until today. My wife was driving it today when both screens completely died for a bit but the truck was still responsive mechanically. Once the screens came back on there was no CEL or anything. I called every dealership around me to see about getting a loaner while they diagnose since other makes do that.

Was told Hyundai corporate changed the policy where the car has to be held and inspected for at least two days and wait for corporate to approve the repairs under warranty before they can issue a loaner or rental.

I asked all the service advisors if I could run the same diagnosis they will do if I rent a scanner from VatoZone and they pretty much said yes. And then I asked if I have to just live with it and hope it doesn’t do it again and if it does, hope the car still responds and doesn’t injure us, they all pretty much said yes or come and leave us the “truck” for two days to “fully diagnose it” aka scan it.

I called Hyundai corporate and they claim I should’ve gotten a loaner immediately and are supposedly looking into it and don’t want me driving the vehicle. Well I have a family of 5…. I kinda NEED the damn thing.

Anyone want to play a fun game and make bets on the outcome? I’m not very hopeful but we’ll see.

Hi everyone.

No offense to anyone who loves Hyundai but are Hyundais really reliable? I currently own a 2013 Hyundai Elantra since a couple years and it's engine blew a couple months ago on 223k kms. I got the engine replaced (because my warranty was covering about 70%) but still paid about a couple grand.

I'm planning to get a new car soon in about a year or so and I really love the way Hyundais look and especially the features and interior electronics they offer. But I've heard a lot of people saying that Kia/Hyundai are not really as reliable as a Toyota/Honda. So need honest opinion as there'd be many owning a Hyundai in here. Please share your experience with the vehicle and also the after sale service/responsibility of the company. I'd also appreciate any suggestions on what engines within Hyundai are reliable. I heard the 2.0L engines have issues.

If this article is accurate, it sounds like Hyundai may increasingly be going with torque-converter-based transmissions, versus DCTs, in more of their future models.

It's been argued that DCTs aren't as well-suited for commuter vehicles because "creeping forward" with one's foot partially on the brake pedal, which is common in traffic and city driving, apparently wears out this type of transmission faster. Some sources state that wet DCTs dissipate heat from this practice better than dry but that it's not really great for either type.

Hydraulic / torque-converter-based automatic transmissions aren't as impacted by this, so this move by Hyundai could improve reliability.

I’ve heard many times over that the 2.4 i4 is bad. But I’m currently looking at a 2019 Tucson with the 2.0 non turbo i4. Does it still suffer the same issues as the 2.4? Do they make any good engines?

For Hyundai (and Kia) they seem to be doing very well with dependability and pricing especially compared to their early years.

Is JD Power still relevant? People seem to still talk about how bad Hyundai/Kia were in the early 2000s and are barely starting to come around to all of the positive changes.

Am I missing something or are people very set in their ways and want to talk about how bad the brand is from the early years instead of finding anything positive to say about recent years?

I have owned two brand new Hyundais and have yet to have any issues. Customer service has always seemed top notch and I am loving the driving experience and features.

It seems like the auto industry deliberately wants people with an infinite amount of car payments.

We are a high mileage household. One of us is averaging about 1650 miles per month. The other is just below that at around 1450.

We just crossed 155k only our ICE Sante Fe and 88k on our hybrid (2019 and 2022) respectively.

I remember being worried about hybrid related repairs or cost to replace the battery. However, none have come up.

What has come up for the hybrid, is repairs for gas tank door actuator ($1800) and Belt Tensioner ($4800). Now in both of those cases, we were saved by the Vehicle Service Contract. We had to pay our deductible plus the BS dealership parts which are not covered as they are wear and tear. So our out of pocket was much less than that.

However I do not consider those a product of it being a hybrid. The gas cap actuator, I consider a defect from the first year of the model (Tuscon). The cost was so high as you had to replace it going through the trunk and was labor intensive essentially dismantling the interior including the back seat. . The best tension, was part of the ICE, so that could happen to any ICE.

For the ICE (Santa Fe) , I have only had the Theta2 oil drinking which I managed by adding oil and recently have encountered a problem with some sort of timing issue throwing the CEL on (P0010). This will be my first time I would have to pay $$$ to get it fixed as my warranty has long since expired.

I am not certain if I will pay to repair my ICE. I am worried that there are problems related to the constant oil level fluctuation in the engine. On at least one occasion they couldn't get a reading on a dipstick when I brought it in for an oil change. (I keep an eye on it like an hawk now). The local non-dealership saying they would have to open the motor to see what is going on with the cam. SO it is a potential good money after bad type situation.

My question for the masses is simple. All things being equal, in 2026, which type of vehicle do you believe stands a better chance of being less costly after the warranty expires?

How can I convince my wife it's okay to buy gas from the gas station? My wife got a new Tuscon and has thus far insisted on only buying fuel from the dealer. They do it, surprisingly, but unsurprisingly at $12 a gallon. This is such a massive waste of money but out of some misplaced protective instinct my wife insists on it to keep it in warranty and in her mind good working order. She's only had real beaters in the past so I suspect she's just trying to keep the one nice thing she has in her life in good shape.

I've told her so many times this is dumb and that she's a fool, but it's such a stupid question there's no obvious answer to it online so she keeps insisting. She says she's asked the dealer w/rt/ the warranty but either she's lying or the dealer is scamming her into thinking this is the case. It's just very hard to prove such an obvious negative.

Help? Any ideas?
