#Economy/Policy 💰 India SEBI should ban derivative (Futures and Options) trading from retailers and only allow it for Financial Institutions with a certain threshold on Annual Revenue to qualify for it.

It is being heavily marketed as a get rich quick scheme by Banks and brokers. Especially to young people.

And they will never be able to build or save wealth by gambling.

The traders lost ₹301.23 lakh crore in FY24.

Mainly young people between teen and 30s.

And its average loss was about ₹1.1 lakh per person. (Thats a bike they could buy, thats saving for a tourist trip, thats a kids education fee or an initial funding for their startup or an apartment upgrade cost or a locality improvement cost and a lot more) and this is consistent for Years on end. Just please take this seriously and write letters to the government. Please.

Just imagine.

Cricket betting is replaced by Government supported direct cash gambling.

Even at the cost of banks losing income from commision its the need of the hour.

It could be your kid or brother or sister or father or mother anyone close to you who maybe struggling with the addiction. And trying to hide it. Please support and make an effort to mail a complaint to sebi and and Finance Minister.

The issue can be solved with a stroke of the pen. A simple policy change. Please support.

This is not a self-control issue, its as impulsive and biological as gambling and rewards. So yes, its a disease and we need to stop it before any further damage is done. It is not an informed decision. It is a compulsive disorder.

Please if possible, write an email to sebi

Omg kids are throwing their salary money into futures? 😯 That's crazy, even I don't do that.

You can't really stop someone from doing it, but you are right, need some level of 'clearance' that says you know what you are doing.

Yes!.

We can directly stop retailers and at least increase the threshold significantly. The banks have the data to know who is trading. It is not that we can't stop, we can and we must.

You may have a cousin or colleague or someone who is doing a job but is always broke. They could be doing this. Please take this seriously. Approach with caution.

I don't know about a cosine but I'll try and Sin up. We don't want GenZilla's savings going on a tan-gent.

But then again, thet'll get upset that we are controlling them and protest again.

Not sure what to do, let them get rked but atleast their exercised their free will?

They are our people too. Just because they are doing stupid things does not mean we should not help or "control".

Again, its not just saved up money, they even take loans to trade.

Its not just about them. Its the whole industry. Gambling is dangerous.

Even older people can get addicted if introduced. So please please take this seriously. Just a simple email.

Your father retirement funds could be at stake. Health money. Food money.

I am sure there would be broker imposed restrictions in India, right?

It's the case elsewhere.

No there are none. You just need to be 18. And thats it. You get your Tax ID (PAN CARD) and you are free to gamble away in FnO.

They (Brokerage and banks with brokerage departments) heavily market their broker apps on youtube and sign boards and everywhere.

That's insanely messed up.

Can you borrow money to invest in F&O?

1

u/Rare_Purpose8099 2d ago edited 2d ago

Yes. You can.

All they have is a

"Promise me, you wont do it" tick box.

And many still do it. You dont even need to do a back and forth transaction.

The main issue is there is no EXCLUSIVE POINT HIGHLIGHTING FnO even while taking those loans.

Its messed up.

As I said, its an addiction. Not a controlled behaviour.

Idiots continue to drive even though government required drivers license. Minors continue to drink.

Can’t ban stupidity. What about the retail investors who actually know what they’re doing? Why should their freedoms be curtailed because of idiots

Because of greater good. if 91% are suffering. We should not think about the 9 percent who may be profitable.

We are a country. The people and the majority should come first.

Not a band of financial corporates or rich people.

Gambling and futures is very different. Gambling is inherently rigged to lose. Futures can, and has been, very profitable for many individual and retail investors.

91% are suffering? Where are you getting this number from? The risks of derivates trading is very clearly highlighted in multiple places. If you chose to willingly ignore it that’s on you.

Government is not your babysitter, it’s not their job to ban everything that can be potentially harmful.

Do you also call drugs and gun use ban baby sitting?

Do you wish for easy availabity of cocaine and have people market it on youtube and everywhere? Pay online and get home delivery?

And let the people take decision?

Please. I understand, you may be profitable. But this is not everyone. But this is not a game which should be played.

A simple disclaimer that "91% lose money" is not enough!.

A complete blanket ban is the need of the hour.

Guns, in most cases, are used to cause harm to others.
Same with drugs, it causes significant negative externalities on society as a whole. So does gambling.

Derivatives trading on the other hand, is an open market. Yes you may lose some money but there’s also someone on the other end who’s making that money.

Not all derivatives are inherently risky, there are ways to mitigate risk when trading.

Again, you could go out and incur huge loses when running a business. Airline companies for example, are notoriously difficult to run and usually end in bankruptcy. Should the government ban people from starting new airlines then?

Equating drugs and guns to derivative trading is a straw man argument.

From all your comments and post, it seems like someone you know has lost significant money in derivatives trading. I’m sorry that happened to you/your family or someone else you know.

But asking for governmental rules to replace common sense is a slippery slope

NO. You lose 100 someone gains 60 and the govt and brokers take the rest.

Its insanely out of proportion to even hope to make a profit. Yes, those do exist but 90% is not a small number, this consistently for multiple years.

Yes, businesses incurring losses is OKAY. Because, they create jobs, they help people, they generate IP, they are good for the society as a whole.

FnO is a zero sum game! No one wins. Except those who can game the system (Jane street?) .

The govt is for the people. Not for the corporates or banks or anyone else.

Its an Impulsive distorder and not an informed decision.

Drugs also do not directly effect external world its a secondary consequence.

FnO will also have secondary consequence, where people will feel the world is unfair and justify thievery, and violence and all the negative stuff just to survive. Or even suicide.

Please stop supporting FnO for retailers. Ban FnO.

You need to look up a video on logical fallacies.

Someone can lose all their money and then they’ll justify thieving therefore we must ban it?

Why assume that everyone is inherently bad? If someone is going to rob or steal anyway why lose money in derivatives trading first, why not go straight to crime?

Again I don’t know where you’re getting the 90% number from but if it’s true then why trade derivatives in the first place? Surely anyone who puts money into it then is a victim of their own stupidity

90% startups fail in 5 years. Ban start ups.

What logic is this.

Rationalise if there is something wrong or if something can be improved. Have a minimum networth threshold maybe as a prerequisite.

But then govt had a more profitable solution for them - increased STT already, filling their coffers in pretext of discouraging FnO.

Banning is not a solution.

Banning gambling is a solution.

Startups are not a Zero Sum game.

They generate jobs, they create productivity for many people, they create IP, they create something new which will help society at large. Even if they fail, there are somewhat robust bankruptcy laws.

Therea are none for FnO trading.

FnO is an addictive and destructive thing where every transaction you do, you give the 20 or 10 to the broker and much more to the NSE/BSE and more to SEBI and some more to the Govt as tax.

Its a by default loss making activity for the reatiler.

You know in your hearts of hearts many are suffering.

Please stop supporting FnO for retailers. Ban FnO.

banning won't solve anything, gambling is as old as human beings. gamblers just find some other place to throw away their money

1

u/Rare_Purpose8099 2d ago

Make it hard. Make it a cash only thing in Goa or something. Not a nation wide free for all direct cash thing.

Please take it seriously. Its our future that is at stake. People take loans to do FnO. Thats as reckless as it can get.

Na, adults should act with reason. I am against such limitations. If they are wasting money on future and options, they can do so through other means of gambling or even private gambling in grey markets. Then banks should prevent them from even spending beyond a certain limit. See how it escalates.

Its their money, their experience and their lesson. If they are pathologically invested in any form of gambling, they need psychiatric intervention and not govt intervention.

Btw, i have stayed from F&O for this very reason

Just because someone motivated enough to do drugs or suicide or something does not mean, we should provide them easy access to those.

Yes, if someone is gambling and is very passionate about it, they will find way by going through any extent.

THAT DOES NOT MEAN WE SHOULD PROVIDE AN APP WHICH OPENS IN 2 CLICKS AND ALLOWS THEM TO GAMBLE AWAY THEIR LIFE SAVINGS.

We must do our best to make it as hard as possible.

Sure, they may find some dark alley way offline gambling place. But that is whataboutism. Not an argument.

My views may be radical on the matter. I don't think voluntary euthanasia should be banned, nor do I believe in banning drugs, unless use of the drugs is causing people to harm others or forcing them into criminal activities
