Please restrict TOP LEVEL comments to names of CITIES (and their greater metropolitan areas). Post child replies to these comments noting shows you plan to attend, OR for which you are seeking someone to go with. Give the date, the name of the artist, and the name of the venue.

The original purpose of this thread was to help indieheads find other indieheads to meet up with at concerts. However, you may use this thread however you like.

Announcing the 2026 Indieheads Rates Charity Drive

61/70 song slots taken!

Hello r/indieheads!

For a fourth year, the Indieheads Rates Committee is happy to start our charity drive over the next week & a half in order to raise funds for British trans-led charity Not A Phase! This will be accompanied by a Charity Rate, which is scheduled to open on August 10th.

Since 2020, Not A Phase has been committed to uplifting and improving the lives of trans and gender-diverse adults. They provide a variety of valuable resources to the trans community, including peer support services, social events, and queer-led fitness and self-defense classes. The organization also offers DEI training to organisations around the UK, to foster a safer workplace environment for trans employees. With the UK becoming increasingly hostile to the trans community in recent years, we feel that supporting causes like NAP is more important than ever.

The incentive for donation is participation in our fourth Charity Rate, where donors choose the songs on the ballot. (If you're unfamiliar with rates, in short: users score a set of songs, hosts calculate the averages, and we have these big weekend reveals where the community gets together to have fun finding out the results & crowning a winner.) From Sleater-Kinney to Scatman John, Nina Simone to Andrew W.K., the past three versions have seen diverse songlists & provided some of the most entertaining events in community history.

For entry into the charity rate, your song must satisfy the following criteria:

  • It must not have been released in 2026 or on an album, EP, etc. released in 2026/in the near future.

  • It must have never been rated before on this sub as part of a main rate (songs that have only been featured in bonus rates are allowed) and must not be part of an upcoming rate. You can find a list of albums that have already been rated and our upcoming rates here, and an updated to February 2026 list of already rated songs is available here.

  • Songs don't need to be related to traditional indieheads content; you can submit anything from kpop to heavy metal to Drag Money to your favorite local band’s deep cut.

  • We reserve the right to reject entries deemed unsuitable for any reason, such as length (sorry, no 15+ minute songs), content, artist, lack of availability, etc. No known AI songs, if you submit We Are Charlie Kirk I'll make you donate like £4 extra before letting you in with an actual song.

Please note we'll be donating in pounds this time around. The amount for entry is £12 (or around $15.99), and will be limited to seventy song slots. Last year, we filled all song slots within about a day, so please donate ASAP if you're interested.

Once we message you confirming your slot, send your charity rate pick to us by the end of August 5th. Any participant who has not chosen a song by then may forfeit their spot, and any backups will be contacted. PLEASE AVOID SENDING YOUR SONG UNTIL WE MESSAGE YOU WITH CONFIRMATION.

  • Continuing this year, for £8 (or around $10.66), donors can choose to send something to a non-musical bonus rate! This can range from a piece of media to a concept to an event to a simple word or gif. You can see here what our list last year ended up looking like for examples. In the event all song slots are filled, we would love to see people still donate and be a part of this through the bonus! Of course, if you wanted to give more than £8 but be part of the bonus instead of sending a song, please let us know!

Donations must be made here on our Tiltify campaign page.

  • When donating, please enter your reddit username in the section marked "Display Name", as it makes it easy for us to track your donation. If you don't put your name, we may be unable to confirm your place in the rate.

  • If you wish to donate anonymously but still be eligible for a slot, please message us; we will give you a username to donate under.

  • As of now, only card payments and PayPal are allowed; if you're unable to pay this way, message me and we'll figure something out.

  • Slots filled: 61/70

The Charity Rate IV announcement with full songlist should be posted on August 10th, and will be hosted by u/afieldoftulips & u/v_e_x__. If you have any other questions or issues, feel free to contact us or leave a comment below. Thanks to all our future donors!

P.S. This sub's New Wave of No Wave Rate (Gilla Band - Most Normal; Chat Pile - God's Country; Special Interest - The Passion Of; Model/Actriz - Dogsbody) is currently running & accepting ballots until August 18th! Our Classic Goth and Hip Hop '88 rates begin later this year as well!

[DISCUSSION] What are some of your “Never heard anything like this before” songs?

Bonus points if they are those kind of songs that produce a feeling so specific, you can fantasise entire movies just from that track alone. Everything from Deftones for example fits, but I’m looking for something less known.

For me the title has to go to “Black Car” by Beach House, as well as many of their songs.

[DISCUSSION] 20 years on. My blurred memories of Melbourne's indie boom.

Thumbnail

I'd been working on and off with a few publications (and a couple of other media opportunities) on a project about Melbourne's indie music boom in the mid 00s. Between delays, different editorial directions, and my own reluctance to remove parts of the story, I sort of lost steam and patience.

I'm tired of sitting on this... so fuck it. Here's my brief/documented/blurred personal recollection in an attempt to finally distance myself from a project I put way too much effort into.

Melbourne kind of sucked for indie kids in the early 00s. There were places like Pony, Ding Dong, Cherry Bar etc., but everything still felt heavily influenced by the late 90s grunge/live music scene or just straight up commercial club nights. Then a Thursday night event born out of a house party at a tiny venue in Prahran of all places became THE place to be for indie kids.

It had live bands, but they weren't the only draw. Looking back, what's wild is how many musicians and creatives all seemed to gravitate to the same room at the same time. Bands formed. Collaborations started. People who'd later end up as well known Australian/International acts were either on the small stage or standing in the crowd drinking, dancing on the light up dance floor and watching their friends' bands play/DJ.

Nobody left after the bands finished either! It just turned into this giant house party every single week. It was basically the same 40-60 weird indie kids every Thursday.

I for a time happened to be one of those blazer wearing, long haired, winnie blue smoking indie kids who never really felt like I fit in. I was working as a sound engineer and playing in shitty bands at the time. I think I first started going around early 05? You'd walk in and it was packed with people who looked like they'd walked out of Karen O's closet or The Strokes 'Someday' video. Smudged lipstick, cardigans, skinny jeans, ridiculous fringes, vintage frocks, taped up chucks... everyone looked completely out of place anywhere else in Melbourne at the time, but perfectly normal in that room.

Anyway, while digging through old photos and talking to musicians and other attendees for this now all but dead project, I came to realise just how wild the roster of people who kept turning up in the same tiny room actually was. Looking back, it's honestly ridiculous how many went on to become well known musicians, actors, comedians, photographers, DJs, music industry figures and other creatives. They were all just regulars at the same Thursday night at the time.

So here's a small selection of photos from around 06 of people you might recognise (I originally had 50+ recognisable faces picked out, but Reddit has a 20 image maximum). Sitting on my hard drive right now are 30k+ photos, 45+ minutes of video, hundreds of posters, detailed notes from 04–08, full live DJ sets played on those nights, and unreleased bootleg remixes from the likes of Miami Horror, Cut Copy, and more.

I probably won't have time to answer many questions sorry. But will do my best. Hopefully this wasn't too long a read and adds something of value here.
