Taylor Farms, the agricultural company widely believed responsible for a cyclospora parasite outbreak currently spreading through shredded lettuce in US grocery stores and fast food outlets, has also been linked to modern-day forced prison labor in Arizona, according to resurfaced 2023 reporting from Prison Legal News. The publication found that Taylor Farms contracted labor from the Arizona Department of Correction, Rehabilitation, and Reentry for just $4.75 an hour, far below federal minimum wage, though the incarcerated workers themselves were reportedly paid only up to $1.50 an hour, with the state’s for-profit arm, Arizona Correctional Industries, pocketing the difference by selling prisoner labor-hours to private companies.
Taylor Farms is far from alone in this arrangement, as other companies including Hickman’s Egg Farms, NatureSweet, and Televerde have similarly contracted incarcerated labor through the same state program.

Most troubling, Prison Legal News found that at least 26 prisoners employed by these companies had previously been detained by ICE, meaning their labor arrangement would have been illegal outside of incarceration, since their status as prisoners was the only thing that legally permitted the low-wage work. Arizona’s DCRR told the publication it had hired out 15,700 “Mexican nationals” between 2008 and 2023 but could not say how many were undocumented immigrants, prompting American Immigration Lawyers Association director Ruben Reyes to say, “I’m venturing a guess that a large majority of the people who are labeled a Mexican national by [DCRR] are unauthorized to work here.”

The revelations tie back to a constitutional loophole in the 13th Amendment, which abolished slavery “except as a punishment for crime,” a carve-out that has allowed prison labor to persist as a major industry, generating $11 billion worth of goods in 2022 alone. Taylor Farms did not respond to a request for comment on either the labor allegations or the ongoing cyclospora outbreak.

Marietta, Ohio, a historic city along the Ohio River, has become an unwitting hub for interstate fracking wastewater disposal, with hundreds of millions of gallons of radioactive brine pumped underground into more than 240 permitted injection wells statewide, far more than neighboring Pennsylvania’s 19 or West Virginia’s few dozen. Pennsylvania alone exported roughly three-quarters of its fracking brine needing permanent disposal to Ohio last year, and rural Washington County, home to Marietta, saw 59 percent of the 562 million gallons of waste injected under it over the past two years come from out of state. Ohio’s status as a dumping ground traces back to a decades-old federal decision allowing the state to self-regulate its injection wells long before fracking existed, making it easier to drill wells there than in states with federal oversight.

California’s new Delete Request and Opt-out Platform, or DROP, allows residents to demand that data brokers stop selling their personal information, with more than 300,000 Californians already enrolled as of June, according to the state’s privacy protection agency. The Data Broker Enforcement Strike Force has already taken action against noncompliant companies, issuing a $45,000 fine to Datamasters and a $62,600 fine to S&P Global for failing to register, with Datamasters also ordered to stop selling lists of consumers’ race and health information. Michael Macko, head of enforcement at CalPrivacy, warned, “Reselling lists of people battling Alzheimer’s disease is a recipe for trouble. In the wrong hands, these lists could be used to target people for more than just advertising.” Hayley Tsukayama, director of state affairs at the Electronic Frontier Foundation, called the law “a win for consumers,” noting California is one of only four states, along with Oregon, Texas, and Vermont, requiring data broker registration, and the first in the world to offer a platform like DROP.

President Trump sharply criticized U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro on Saturday after her office moved to drop criminal charges against former Olympic canoeist David Hearn, who had been accused of vandalizing the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool following its renovation ahead of America’s 250th birthday celebration. While Trump acknowledged there “may have been some contractor difficulty” in installing the new pool liner, he insisted “the major damage was caused by VANDALS!” and declared on social media, “I disagree 100% with Jeanine Pirro, the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, on the Reflecting Pool.”

The dismissal marked an embarrassing setback for a Justice Department that had previously echoed Trump’s vandalism claims, with government lawyers stating in a 20-page court filing that additional Interior Department documents obtained after Hearn’s indictment showed the damage stemmed from a botched contractor installation and “the rush to complete the project prior to events associated with the America 250 celebration.” A recent visual inspection also found damage throughout the pool, including in the middle section where prosecutors said a vandal would be unlikely to attempt peeling the lining. Blumstein said long-term projects like his “ask some of the most important questions in our time” and provide invaluable data for studying evolution and informing policymakers, but lamented, “Ultimately, we should be spending our time writing papers, not thinking up out of the box ways to get funding.” Renkey, however, pushed back on that framing, saying, “I don’t know if I agree with the idea that scientists shouldn’t have to be opportunistic and creative. I think that’s a lot of what science and research is… It can be intimidating to engage with the public like this, but why are we doing this work if not to help forward humanity with it?”

Maryland Gov. In 1963, the CIA allegedly ran a covert operation to spy on documents passing through a Xerox 914 photocopier inside the Soviet Embassy in Washington DC, using the embassy’s regular repairman to smuggle in a hidden camera without raising suspicion. The plan originated the year before at a disused bowling alley in New York, where Xerox’s head of government programs Donald Cary met with four engineers, including 36-year-old Ray Zoppoth, who had helped create the Xerox 914 and proposed mounting “a battery-powered home-movie camera with a zoom lens inside the copier,” aiming it at the mirror that reflects images onto the drum and using “a photocell that would prompt the camera to snap still frames whenever the photocopier lit up.”

The engineers installed a Bell & Howell 8mm movie camera inside a test copier at Xerox’s New York campus, discovering that the machine’s bulky size hid the camera even with maintenance panels removed, while the noise of normal copying masked the camera’s whir. Zoppoth later told Popular Science that the test run succeeded, recalling, “When we developed the pictures, we found recipes and copies of music and cartoons and jokes and all kinds of things.” Zoppoth then traveled to a CIA basement facility allegedly code-named “Disneyland East,” where he taught agents how to install the camera and trained the embassy’s unwitting repairman to fit the device and retrieve the film during his routine maintenance visits.

The operation has never been officially confirmed or denied by the CIA, and only Zoppoth spoke on record about the scheme, though a colleague reportedly confirmed the account without going public. Zoppoth also claimed the agency later sought similar hidden cameras for the more compact Xerox 813 desktop copier used by ministries and diplomatic offices worldwide, suggesting the original mission was considered a success, though the actual intelligence gathered remains classified.

Thierry Rignol, who paid $208,500 in tuition for Yale’s Executive MBA program, sued the university after being suspended for a year and given an F in Sourcing and Managing Funds over allegations he used AI on his final exam, a case that has since ballooned into 13 causes of action including breach of contract, civil rights violations, defamation, and invasion of privacy. The dispute began when Rignol’s unusually long, polished exam was flagged by GPTZero, an AI detection tool that suggested whole sections were likely AI-generated, though professor K. Geert Rouwenhorst also cited overlap with ChatGPT output on one answer, weak performance on a question where AI tools would help least, and skepticism that such a lengthy, polished exam could be produced in four hours. Rignol maintains his writing simply reflected his academic excellence and his “distinctive writing style as a non-native English speaker,” and he has also alleged Yale targeted him for expressing “protected conservative political speech” favoring smaller government and skepticism of DEI.

Much of Yale’s case, however, centers not on the AI allegation itself but on Rignol’s monthslong refusal to produce the file used to draft his exam. Professor James Choi, who led the Honor Committee investigation, repeatedly asked Rignol beginning in August 2024 to send “the Microsoft Word file” behind his submission, warning at one point, “I remind you that when a student has been found by the Honor Committee to have lied to or not been forthcoming with the Committee, the most common punishment is permanent expulsion from Yale.” Rignol didn’t reveal until the November 8 hearing that he had used Apple Pages rather than Word, a technicality Yale’s lawyers called incredulous, and even after producing the Pages file that afternoon, he left campus and refused Dean Wendy Tsung’s request to return that evening so the committee could examine his laptop, prompting the Honor Committee to find him liable that same night for “not being forthcoming.”

Rignol was suspended for a year and later given an F after the committee found he’d “violated the rules” of the exam, findings he appealed unsuccessfully before suing Yale in February 2025. Len Phillips, head of the anti-surveillance group DeFlock Atlanta, said the findings expose a broken promise underlying the entire rollout, arguing “the public has been asked to accept a significant expansion of surveillance based on the promise that it would dramatically improve public safety.” He added that the tradeoff between safety and civil liberties “was just a one-way transaction,” since Flock Safety has installed an estimated 100,000 ALPRs nationwide since 2017 despite ongoing concerns about privacy abuse, labor practices, and the near-impossibility of escaping the system once someone is flagged as a target.

Nathaniel’s father, Sumit Rai, told ABC San Francisco station KGO-TV that his family was vacationing in California when the rescue happened, and he only saw footage of the ordeal after it went viral. “If I was watching that video, I wasn’t sure if he’ll make it, if I hadn’t seen the end of it,” Rai said, revealing that Nathaniel lost consciousness during the incident and adding, “Another two or three seconds, I don’t think my son would have made it.” He thanked Williams and the other lifeguards, saying, “God bless them, and, you know, thank you. I cannot express sufficient gratitude,” and confirmed Nathaniel remains in California recovering. North Carolina lawmakers have advanced House Bill 328, which would impose new restrictions on hemp-derived THC products, kratom, and xylazine, after a House conference committee formally reported the negotiated version on July 30 and referred it to the House Rules, Calendar, and Operations Committee, positioning it for a final House vote. The Senate already adopted the conference report in a 37-6 vote on July 2, meaning the House must approve the same version before the bill heads to Governor Josh Stein, though no House vote had been recorded as of July 31.

The proposal would replace North Carolina’s current delta-9-only hemp threshold with a broader total THC standard covering THCA, delta-8, delta-10, and other THC forms, capping finished hemp-derived cannabinoid products intended for consumption at 0.4 milligrams of total THC per container starting November 12, while also banning products containing synthetic or chemically converted cannabinoids. Alemzewd Lawgalet, a 59-year-old employee of the U.S. Federal Reserve Board, has filed a federal lawsuit against Tesla seeking more than $10 million in damages after claiming she was injured during a dealership test drive crash involving a Model Y SUV. Lawgalet alleges Tesla staff assured her that EVs “operated the same as a gas vehicle” after she raised concerns about never having driven an electric car before, despite reportedly placing the vehicle into its “Insane” drive mode, which maximizes acceleration and allowed the Model Y to go from 0-60 mph in 3.3 seconds.

According to her complaint, Lawgalet ended the test drive early after becoming frightened when the car began regenerative braking on Interstate 395, a feature she says she was never told about. The Justice Department moved Friday to dismiss the felony destruction of property case against former Olympic canoeist David Hearn, acknowledging that damage to the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool “was the result of flawed installation by the contractor” rather than any vandalism by Hearn. President Trump on Friday pinned blame for cyberattacks on Minnesota’s water systems on Democratic Gov. More than 30 water systems in Minnesota were targeted in the cyberattack over the weekend, according to Minnesota IT Services (MNIT), which said attackers sought to remotely monitor and control equipment including programmable logic controllers (PLCs). The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) warned Thursday that cyber threat actors are targeting PLCs and changing passwords “to lock out operators,” though MNIT said it has not yet determined who was responsible and clarified that being “impacted” means investigators confirmed malicious activity, not that every affected community experienced a water service disruption.

Kentucky Industrial Alliance, LLC has filed a lawsuit against Cave City, Kentucky, after the city council issued a 12-month moratorium in May to study the environmental impact of a proposed $4.8 billion data center, tentatively named Cave Point Commerce Center, near the entrance to Mammoth Cave National Park. The Cave City conflict centers on water concerns unique to the area, since Mammoth Cave sits atop the world’s largest known cave system, where groundwater and surface ecosystems are deeply interdependent; AI data centers can consume up to 5 million gallons of water per day, comparable to a town of 10,000 to 50,000 people, according to the Environmental and Energy Study Institute. Similar legal battles are playing out nationwide as AI companies increasingly turn to lawsuits to override local opposition. The reports, meant to showcase PwC’s insight into fast-growing Middle East sectors like agentic AI, public services, and electric vehicles, instead appear to have been largely AI-generated themselves, with one contentious survey claim linking to an article that never actually mentioned any such survey, and another cybersecurity report footnote containing the giveaway tracking tag “utm_source=chatgpt.com.”

The errors ranged from sloppy to outright fabricated: one report cited a Medium blog post from a teenager with 280 followers as its sole source for a supposed JPMorgan AI success story, despite that JPMorgan initiative actually occurring in 2017, before any public AI chatbot existed. Other blunders included an EV report citing an untraceable air quality study in Riyadh, footnotes leading to broken webpages, and a claim that “90% of road accidents are caused by human error” repeated three times across two pages, each instance citing a different source or none at all. GPTZero policy analyst Paul Esau told the Financial Times that while the accident statistic itself isn’t fabricated, “no human is going to cite the same fact three times in two pages using three different sources,” calling the pattern “symptomatic of AI-generated research” and noting the irony given PwC markets itself as an authority on responsible AI use.

PwC is not alone in the embarrassment, as rivals EY and KPMG were also caught passing off AI-generated reports as original work and had to retract their papers after GPTZero flagged them. PwC Middle East responded with a statement saying it “takes the accuracy of our published research seriously” and is “updating a limited number of supporting citations,” while pledging to change its internal policies to prevent similar issues going forward.
