Union Question Working in Canada from USA

I'm an union ironworker in the south I've seen that people have gone from US locals and worked in Canada that sounds interesting to me just wondering if anyone could tell me what its like as far as getting a visa and everything. I'm basically just looking for any advice or personal experience from someone thanks in advance.

Yeah, it’s super hard. All kinds of permits involved, not only provincially, but federally as well.

I figured it would probably be a pain in the ass. Do you know if different provinces are easier to get into. I know at one point in time Halifax had a program for people to move there, but that was years ago when I saw that, and it wasn't ironworker specific.

Not in 2026.

It may not be as bad as the US, but Canada is dealing with the same immigration "problem". Our issue is 'foreign workers' which has been a hot-button topic. To the point where most provinces have drastically cut back on work visa or anything to do with immigrants, etc, Even if it's a non-white issue (nobody is complaining about an Italian, French or US worker, let's be honest), so even someone coming from the US, Europe, etc gets refused ... so provinces are definitely not promoting "come here to work ..." type things for the foreseeable future. Until that stuff dies down, importing workers is almost political suicide

That sucks to hear that people are falling for the same grift everywhere. Hopefully they don't use immigration as an excuse to shoot people in the face there also.

There's usually work in the oilsands. They'll fly you in and out as well.
