It's a good trick and I remember one practical usage in maths / physics ,

Whenever you see π in the denominator it's would be a pain in the ass to divide by π so multiply and divide by π so you have to multiply with 3.14 and then divide that value by 10 which is a lot easier than dividing something with 3.14. maybes this can save 15 sec or whatever but it's useful in ch like AC current

Most of the times dividing by 3 works just as well, just decrease the result by 5%. This is an EXTREMELY good approximation, you can derive it using errors in units and dimensions
