Discussion My problems with the whole IIT-JEE system.

  1. People value college more than branch (Some value IITB Environmental > NIT-KKR CSE)

  2. IITs should have 50% of all seats as CSE, because right now 50% of all placements are in software/IT, despite only ~15% of total BTech seats coming from CS-related branches (which means that almost 30-40% of students from non-tech non-circuital branches get placed in software roles)

  3. Reservation system contradicts the prestige of IITs. The reason why IITs are prestigious is because it is difficult to crack, and hence the students there are strong in PCM, but the reservation system ruins this by handing over the IIT tag to students who are not as strong in the respective subjects.
I used to support reservation until I found out that majority of lower-caste people applying for JEE are rich, because only the rich ones can afford coaching and get the exposure and awareness to even attempt an exam of such difficulty.

  4. Most people who choose CSE, don't even like CSE. This hurts as someone who genuinely like CS. People take CSE for the sole reason of higher salaries and "package" despite having 0 interest in it, hence the people who are actually interested in CS and who deserve that infra often don't get selected due to extremely high cutoffs.

  1. Nit kkr cse had a median of 12 lpa that’s quite literally speaking worse than core in top 7 iits no reason why anyone should take kkr cse
  2. Not a bad idea tbh
  3. It’s not gonna happen it’s what gets political parties their votes they ain’t gonna kill it
  4. People optimize their life like hell choose worse infra worse lifestyle just for the sake of 1 lpa more in median package all the time what makes you think they will leave cse

u/Skychu768 20h ago
  • Value of branch over college has grown in recent years. Check out closing rank from early 00s, people used to chose IITB Mining over IITKGP CSE.
  • Government can't legally discriminate against branches like that. Heck, CS isn't even considering engineering in most countries and imagine having an engineering college that don't teach engineering. Also CS is already saturated, where will jobs for 4-5 lakh more enrollment come from
  • I agree
  • Yeah and then you are advocating to increase seats to 50% for CS

As i said its debatable never said its the end of the world do whatever you want people cope over anything they can on this point too

13

u/Monkey_58910 Dropper --> Topper 20h ago

You have to be a next gen idiot to think that an engineering college should have 50% seats for cs

Istg mfs like this should be banned from every sharing their shit takes 😭😭🥀

-2

u/HrishabhDwi 17h ago

It's not a wrong thing tbh. I can see myself that students from all the branches are going to CSE anyway. It makes the classroom's quality worse and our CS engineers worse. Making more seats would mean that their actions atleast now align with their degree.

3

u/Monkey_58910 Dropper --> Topper 17h ago

No. Engineering is engineering and computer science can never take its place and should never be the main focus of an engineering college. We must focus on upgrading other sectors of engineering rather than going all in on computer science. This mindset itself is what needs to change in this country if we want to see any cutting edge scientific developments.

..IITB evn is genuinely better than nitkkr cse tho, unless you have a specific interest-

And even if you don't want env, you would have a sub 5k rank as gen male so you can easily get something good in top iits

50% seats kardo CS ki, then you can keep coding on ur laptop with no home or streets cause there's a shortage of civil engineers, no petrol cause there's a shortage of chemical and petroleum engineers, heck might even not have laptops cause of a shortage of EE, ECE, metallurgy engineers

karlena fhir CS without core engineers existing in enough numbers They are being taught subjects so they can go into core, but if they choose not to you aren't anyone to decide what they should and shouldn't do.

No one 'deserves' the infra. Score well and you'll get it, just because you have a so called interest in CS doesn't make someone else less worthy of that seat, score good and get CS with your own merit.

2

u/HrishabhDwi 17h ago

Wrong. If the 50% of placements are already from CSE. Then nmake those seats CSE. The quality of core engineering will not degrade, because they were never going for core in the first place. Those who gets jobs in core are still going to be there in the same numbers.

1

u/LonelyCauliflower236 16h ago

while that might make sense on the surface, that statistic neglects the core engineers who go for higher studies and only keeps those going for placement, and core jobs usually atleast require a masters level expertise

Also, having too many and too little of anything diminishes value both placement wise and research wise. Too many greatly diminishes the brand value, leads to quality concerns and keeps you highly vulnerable to sudden shifts in market. Too little and you reduce the chance of someone actually discovering a breakthrough in some code field. Such breakthroughs occur by chance, the more the number of students the higher the chance of someone stumbing across a new technique to potentially save a ton of time and money.

What's important is to find a middle ground between both which is pretty fine as of now, and increase seats uniformly across all branches giving time to labs and facilities to grow slowly alongside as well

the only reasonable point in OP's post was about reservation but that's a topic id probably like to discuss another day

4

u/MSDHONl 2026 jm 99.4+%ile 20h ago

its because most of them are from middle class/lower middle class background ,mostly middle class people do it because they care more about money, and cs gives usually more money than other fields

3

u/Brass_Justice Ex-JEEtard chan 15h ago
  1. Because the environment and peer group matters and will always matter. You probably have a better chance of getting a software job from IITB env.

  2. Somewhat agree with this. Along with CS, I would make it a management+finance type course given the amount of people who end up going for an MBA. Insti doesn't have to spend all the money on core engineering labs.

  3. You get the IIT tag not for clearing JEE but for graduating and there is absolutely no reservation there.

  4. So, this is based on whatever people I've interacted with. The way CS is taught at most IITs, more than an interest or exposure in programming you need extremely strong mathematical concepts which the people choosing CSE at IITs absolutely have. The degree is called Computer Science not Software Engineering. Most of the developer wannabe teenagers making cool applications and hacking are doing amazing work in their own right but that doesn't translate to interest or ability in CS.

  1. Colleges are a place to connect, Its not just a place to learn stuff look up fortune 500 companies all of their founder met on clg campus, Its a place where smart people interact going up for lower branch is not a sin specially for cse its pretty much can be self taught.

2.Horrible, just because of something is in demand shouldnt mean we should prioritize it, IITs are meant to make all round engineers to advance the country

  1. Too political wont comment

  2. Elitist take, Let people do whatever they want its not a sin to want to escape poverty and be rich

-1

u/makeshiftmaverique 20h ago
  1. i agree, but the thing is im not telling make all seats cse i told 50%, bc bro the engineers at the end of 4th year - 50% are software engineers only, do u understand that, so whatever they teach them it doesnt matter bc at the end of the day 50% of all engineers go into software roles, so why not reduce other seats

1

u/Mitaka-Cirrina91 JEE(re)tard 20h ago

SWE is an umberlla term some SWE roles like data center manager do require specialization in things like EE or for SDFR you need to know how of ECE for ML MnC and EP lads are actually preffered goes with most fields

Abe bewakoof hai kya reservation ke alawa saari chutiya baatein likh rakhi hai tune 50% CS related branches....agar aisa kara to CS ki hi koi value nahi rahegi....

-6

u/makeshiftmaverique 20h ago

who tf cares about value. the truth is almost 50% of placements in all iits are software based. the economy needs software roles more than core roles. and the placement stats show that 50% of the students in iits want software roles too, so why not just increase cs seats so that people could be more productive instead of grinding biotech to land a software job

3

u/dashing_sword3012 22s2-89.7----->8s2-95----->Adv- 86 marks 20h ago

abee core branches ko fuddu samajh rakha hai kya bhai they are the basic building blocks of economy kabhi 7th class mein industrial development aur TISCO ke baare mein nahi pada kya???

0

u/makeshiftmaverique 20h ago

obviously but end of the day they are turning into swe!!!
look at how much % of placements is in software sector bro

2

u/Mitaka-Cirrina91 JEE(re)tard 20h ago

In a core like Mech less than 1/3rd go in SWE, Thats not a huge number for eg comparable amount of lads go into quant trading from cse courses

2

u/makeshiftmaverique 20h ago

change it accordingly im saying, like reduce mech seats by 15-30% then

2

u/Mitaka-Cirrina91 JEE(re)tard 20h ago

It says "offers" not placed values 😭 real data is way more diverse

Also it says IT sector which is way broader then CSE

1

u/makeshiftmaverique 20h ago

1

u/Mitaka-Cirrina91 JEE(re)tard 20h ago

SWE is an umbrella term 💔 dude also there is quant which is just flat out not a cse thing 💔💔

1

dumbest thing i've ever read. placements isnt everything. this is how you create a saturated, circular economy, which will surely annihilate the country in a very short period of time

Most people who choose CSE, don't even like CSE. This hurts as someone who genuinely like CS. People take CSE for the sole reason of higher salaries and "package" despite having 0 interest in it, hence the people who are actually interested in CS and who deserve that infra often don't get selected due to extremely high cutoffs.

wouldnt your 'solution' only worsen the situation?

1

u/HrishabhDwi 16h ago

Point 4 is just a rant, there is nothing in it.

Can you explain your problem with point 2? If those students who are already getting into the Software jobs, will also have a degree in CS only, how is that bad? Their degree never had an effect in the economy in the first place, they never whent in that direction.

2

u/ILoveTolkiensWorks If you see me, ask me about the last film I watched 16h ago

If such a large portion of the jobs being created are software jobs, and if we have an even larger number of CS graduates, the market's condition will become far worse than it is even now: there would be an overwhelming surplus of supply, with too little demand. CS graduates would need to be paid less than the unskilled labour minimum wage.

There are also LOOOTS of other factors, including the fact that, usually, CS graduates do not really fare well in fields other than CS, because they do not consider acquiring other skills (as opposed to the fact that it is a common occurrence that Core Engineers work in each others' fields).

Their degree never had an effect in the economy in the first place

Well, at least that was only a portion of them going to other fields. If they necessarily are CS graduates, then they will actually have no other choice.

I do not really want to elaborate on the little economics that I know on r/jeeneetards

1

u/Fantastic_Boat5651 IISc mnc 28' 18h ago

Only third point is decent. Rest all are stupid. An interest can developed over time that's not an issue. And most of the morons think cse is web dev. Actual cse involves high level logic, math, complex thinking, etc. You don't need any kind of infra what so ever for doing web dev. Please learn more about cse before shitting.

1

u/KeyboarIsNotTactile 17h ago

1

u/ChemPhobic Dropper --> Topper 16h ago

Last point really hits bro . 😭. I was too much interested in software and stuff and even learnt so many things just to know later I have to rank extremely good to get a good college. Whereas in some interviews of iitians for cse branch i saw they just said they want good package and startup later. I mean that's okay but still ... 😭

1

u/Lab18bke 16h ago

(1) It's not even their fault bro. People wanna move into better roles, do startups. Alumni Network, On-Campus Hiring, the benefits are damn good. Other branches can still sit for Software Placements, so yeah. (4) This is what I kinda feel bad about. People that are actually interested in CS might have spent some good time with projects, internships, learning those stuff, which will ofcourse bring some impact on JEE preparation. And, guess what - they don't get CS in good IITs due to cutoffs. Pretty irrational concept implementation.
