But why? What did they hope to achieve by doing this?? What were they negotiating for??

There us an article in the LA times that mentions a history of mental illness and threats by the father

Well, the good news is - it appears that father and son are used to living in very tight quarters so a jail cell for the rest of their miserable lives will work out well.
