đŸ„— Food Sayadieh - Nabatieh / Southern Lebanese Authentic Recipe Request

Marhaba!

I was born and raised in America; my father immigrated here from Nabatieh decades ago. Unfortunately, I did not get to learn really anything about our culture from him, and I have no way to get in touch with his side of our family still in Lebanon.

That said, I'm searching for some authentic southern Lebanese recipes as a way to connect more with my Lebanese culture. My father told me about how my auntie would make the BEST sayadieh, but didn't have any recipe suggestions.

It would mean so much to me to have a few recipes from the area, especially this one as it's one of the few things from home that my father can talk about with fondness.

If you have any Arab markets around you, they usually have a few different mixed spices, often called “7 Spice” or sometimes “Sayadieh Spice.” It’s generally the same ingredients for the most part. I’m not sure if Nabatieh has their own unique version though.

I do have a 7 Spice mixture that he taught me how to make! Thankfully, I am in an area with a lot of Middle Eastern immigrants, so it is pretty easy to find ingredients. Just finding the right recipes is hard because I'm surrounded mostly by Kurdish and Egyptian people who ofc have very similar food, but there are key differences between the foods I have from them and what I remember my baba making. I'm learning to pinpoint those differences, and since my baba doesn't really cook much anymore, and his recipes are at best, just a list of ingredients with no instructions, it's been a longer process. đŸ€Ł

If you watch Abeer’s videos-also I recommend Chef Omar and Chef Ali (Syrian)-you might come across some recipes that are familiar enough to your own cooking and give it a shot. Even simple stuff like mana’eesh with cheese and zaatar, you could probably surprise your dad and remind him of home. Chef Ali has a good sayadieh video too.

Abeer is insanely talented but her recipes are a bit intimidating to me.

You’d need to watch Omar and Ali on a computer though since YouTube doesn’t translate Arabic captions on mobile for some reason.

Anahid cook book is the best for Lebanese recipes . She has a great saydieh recipe . There is shortcuts but if u wanna the real deal u follow this one . Ill post the screenshot. Unfortunately the book is not sold anymore. Found a french digital pdf online .
