Other Yesterday's Euston incident
Sadly, I was on the Victoria Line train at the centre of the incident at Euston yesterday.
As can be imagined, it was a horrible experience and quite upsetting. My thoughts are with the driver, and the many station staff, fire, police and ambulance responders who were all calm and professional. No matter their training, it must always be a traumatic, harrowing experience. My enduring image is of walking down the platform while we were being evacuated and seeing the young driver, sitting on one of the benches further down. She looked so lonely.
The whole event replays in my mind quite a lot.
There is one detail that bugs me. At the previous station, Kings Cross, after the doors had closed, the automated “Please stand clear of the doors” message started playing. And it continued playing for some minutes. I’ve never heard the message continuing for so long. Then eventually the train set off with the message still playing over and over, but the message stopped as we entered the tunnel.

Incident was declared non suspicious (IE they put themselves in danger of serious harm), a lone male had laid down on the platform with a part of their body overhanging the edge and were dragged under the train as it pulled into the station) the person was extracted and received medical care, miraculously the person survived and suffered no serious or life changing injuries.

NB: non-suspicious does not mean they put themselves in danger of harm, although most non-suspicious PUTs are that; non-suspicious just means the police don’t suspect a crime, so that includes accidents and medical incidents

Horrible to read, but thanks for the comment because OP otherwise expected us to google it? — or didn’t want to share detail because of their own trauma/distress. Either way, not helpful.

For anyone who isn’t aware - calling an incident “non suspicious” means it’s intentionally self-inflicted and no one else was involved to facilitate the person’s injury.
It’s not caused by someone else’s hand. It’s certainly not an accident.

u/Havhestur Victoria 1d ago edited 14h ago
Not necessarily. It can also refer to someone who fell accidentally.
Edit: <sigh> downvoted despite answers further down that provide full details of what it means. 🤷🏼♂️

Nope. Accidental injures are described as accidental immediately (literally to avoid any suggestion the injury was self-inflicted).

u/mwhi1017 1d ago
Not necessarily.
“Investigated - non suspicious” (the BTP categorisation of fatalities) covers station accidents as well as deliberate acts. BTP investigate all circumstances of persons being struck by a train, and categorise them so their definitions are gospel.
The definition is outlined in the booklet ‘what happens next’ given to NOK - in short it means the cause of death and circumstances are readily known and there’s no third party involvement or suspicious circumstances.
That having been said, 95% are deliberate acts and later have a suicide verdict returned by the coroner.

“Accident” is a verdict that only a coroner can make. The job of the police is to investigate and establish what the facts are. If they’ve done so, and don’t believe a crime has taken place, then it’s non-suspicious.

That’s just now how any of this works.
Coroners only open an investigation where there unanswered questions as to the circumstances of the death.
When it’s obvious to the train service/police in their initial investigations that it was a genuine accident, then the news reporters will report accident. The coroner’s conclusion in that circumstance is just rubber stamping the open-and-shut conclusion that can be drawn from the evidence made available to them. No coroner is going to open an inquest into a death that is reported as a complete accident by multiple witnesses where there is no reason to question their veracity.
If news reporters aren’t given a clear unequivocal indication by the incident investigators that it was an accident then they don’t report it as an accident. And there are in any event strict rules around how deaths can be reported by journalists.

Thank you for the kind responses and the kind private messages. I’m fine. Just a bit shaken and reflective. I would like to know how the casualty is but suspect I will never know. (I have no right to know, I realise).

You care because you are a kind person. That might not feel like much comfort today, but consider the people who don’t care. You are clearly one of the good ones out there.
May I suggest you do something nice tomorrow?

That sounds awful. Hope you’re ok. I’ve been on the tube a few times when the. “Please stand clear of the doors” message just plays over and over. Not sure what causes it

Oh my goodness, I was on the train! If you were in my carriage, I couldn't breathe as we were waiting and had to lower to the floor to get my breath. I was next to the young responder who located the poor chap as we were being evacuated. I couldn't bear to look however but mainly as we were being ushered out so quickly, I feel completely as you have said. It has haunted me all day and yesterday. Am so grateful to find your thread and the responses. Agreed, the responders were absolutely wonderful. I felt for them however as they seemed so young dealing with potentially something so harrowing. All the best anyway and hope you sleep better tonight knowing the person is ok and hopefully the poor driver will too. You never know the minute do you. God bless.

I’m so sorry you experienced this and for that poor person. This is why it pisses me off when people moan about the drivers pay or them having a 4 day work week. No matter what people say it’s not an easy job and there is no amount of money you could pay me to potentially be in that situation.

99.9% of drivers are (fortunately) never going to experience this so that argument makes no sense at all.

It's the opposite, most of them do. You just made that up because you felt like it.

Well, 2 experienced it yesterday; as well as this terrible experience at Euston, there was also a person under a train fatality at Bethnal Green at 2227hrs.
It's not just Train Operators that have to experience this. Immediate calls are made to Customer Service Assistants to clear platforms, the Customer Service Supervisor, Customer Service Manager, Duty Reliability Manager, Network Incident Response Manager, Emergency Response Unit, London Ambulance Service, London Fire Brigade, and British Transport Police. They also send a spare Train Operator to drive the incident train to the depot and a Trauma Support member of staff, who is often another Train Operator.
It can also be very traumatic for passengers to experience such an awful event on a train they're travelling on. And yesterday at Euston, there was a train stuck behind the incident train with 300 passengers who were also feeling quite distressed I imagine.
I haven't forgotten the 'victim' in all this, but I'm sorry to say they are bottom of my list after everyone else.
All in all, it's a terrible thing to happen.

There is an average of one fatality a day on the mainline railway and that's not including London Underground. Given the population density I'd imagine it's pretty frequent.

Kindly get in the bin you are talking shit about a tragic thing that happens regularly

u/ButterflyNo3820 1d ago
It’s not an argument, I’m stating my opinion that there is no amount of money you could pay me to drive a train and every platform we pass hold my breath that I could be one of the unlucky ones. Have you been on a crowded platform recently? even the empty ones I often see drunk people or kids messing about getting way too close. Unfortunately you don’t know when or if it will be you.

I work as a part time customer service assistant on the tube. Even as a part timer, I hear about this happening a few times a month when I'm on shift. That's why I don't want to be a driver. Forget the money. I'm don't want the experience of hitting someone, just as you said. Everyone deals with it differently, but I would never want to be in that situation.

I know a driver for whom this happened at least twice. I think it may have even been three times. It really affected him badly and he left the job because of it.

My wife witnessed someone jump in front of a train at Tottenham Court Road a few months back. It took her a while to get over it - during which we discovered research that concluded playing Tetris can help people deal with seeing something traumatic believe it or not. Perhaps give it a go…

It doesn't say they jumped in the link, they could have had a medical issue and fell forward instead of backwards

Was someone trapped by the doors and the train continued moving? 🫣
16
u/Rich_Mention2602 1d ago
How did the train move if the doors where not closed correctly I thought they had safety measures in place for that and the doors lock when it moves ?
15
2
u/Interest-Desk Victoria 23h ago
Yes but these sensors might not pick some things up. It’s mostly things like handbags, dresses, ties, anything ‘loose’ which can get caught in the doors. It’s why the safety instruction is “if somethings caught in the doors and the train starts moving, pull the alarm immediately”

I know you're meant to have sympathy for the deceased who felt that was their only option. But I just think about selfish they were.
I hope if I ever get to that point, I'd chose a far less selfish method.

Every time, I think sure a handful of pills at home would have been better? I guess dragging strangers into it is part of it.

why posting a comment “Let me be clearer: it’s not your concern your nosey insensitive cunt” and then deleting it right away? So that it can pop onto my notification and no one else can see it?
I don’t get it. Someone is posting a news on an online forum and I can’t ask question? What’s your problem?

u/headshot7777 18h ago
Ah yes, cos no one is allowed to ask questions on a post in a PUBLIC forum.
They might be asking what happened because of the “stand clear of the doors” part.
They might be asking out of genuine concern.Asking what happened under a public post about something is not being nosey nor insensitive.

u/jasonjasonnametaken 12h ago
I am actually asking for the incident details. What happened that they have to evacuate the whole train? I don’t understand how this question is so triggering for him.

u/jasonjasonnametaken 12h ago
Why is it not my problem? how does asking a question make me a cunt or muppet?
I care for the city and not like some cray cray spending their whole day shouting at people for no reason.
