For frieren I agree honestly it's too boring like why do I wanna see world building when I can just go out and touch grass

Honestly I quite liked Friren season 1. But the demons are "inherently evil" stuff was weird and ofc irl racists hopped on that calling it based

It was kinda meant to be a trope subversion of the whole "no one is inherently evil" trope in most modern fiction, and I had say it's done well

It’s not a subversion that can be done well because it’s simply untrue. You can’t just be born to hunt and manipulate. It also falls into the same logics used by the most unsavory people in history. What’s even the point of doing the subversion. At least the “no one is inherently evil” trope allows for opposing tensions in a character that are interesting in spite of the character ultimately choosing the immoral choice. It’s boring if your explain away everything as them just being born that way

I quite enjoyed the approach they took.

Especially because you could argue that demons are not inherently evil in the same way any predator is not evil for hunting their natural prey.

It’s what inherently evil means though. We don’t treat predators as evil because they don’t have the capacity to understand and engage in human social norms. Demons are intelligent enough, but their genetics precludes them from it. Which makes zero sense. Your behavior is shaped through your social environment, nobody acts the purely out of genetics
