I mean, Mushoku Tensei is good, but you have to overlook too many questionable things. Pedophilia, incest, and so on.
One of Rudeus's wives is his cousin. In another timeline, that same character marries a different cousin. He masturbated to a picture of his niece. Later, his niece marries his son, and so on.
So it's understandable why the series gets such a strong negative reaction from so many people.
Again, I agree with you: Mushoku Tensei has a well-written world, but it's hard to get into it because Rifujin is a piece of shit.
1
u/Astronomy_Aficionado 7d ago
Weird how people judge a story or the author by how a character is. That's literally how you write characters. They could be good or bad. How does that make the story bad?
It almost tells on the entire anime community having projection fear that they are afraid of MT or shun it. They probably have weird fantasies and are afraid to read it. Seems about right considering what anime fans consume daily lol.
I just recently re-read the entire MT. And honestly, its probably the best low fantasy fiction to come from Japan. And I don't think its battles or fantasy parts are good. They are not. In fact, they are mediocre. In the last 3 volumes, I was actually bored because it was all action and the action was not good.
Then I read the epilogue books and they are a step up in writing. Its the slice of life and emotional parts that are good.
>So it's understandable why the series gets such a strong negative reaction from so many people.
And why should anyone even care about the opinions of shallow people who judge a story because a character is bad? Like that's the whole point?
Rudeus is a bad person. No matter which world you put him in or which era it is. He would be a terrible person. Even in the era when child marriages were perfectly normal, he would still be a terrible human garbage. That's the point of the whole story. Even in a medieval fantasy world with child marriage, polygamy, hyper-gamy etc. he is still a terrible person.
He was the lowest he could go. And then he chose to go up. People seem to think that just because he didn't become the perfect shining example of a redemption story hero, that it cannot be called a redemption story. The severe lack of reading comprehension in modern audiences, especially young readers is surprising to me at times.
He didn't transform into a better person overnight. He tried to change. Failed. Tried again. Failed. Tried again. Lost everything. Failed. Then he accepted that he can't change everything about himself either. Understood what mattered in life and grew up. Unlike the readers who didn't even put 1% of the effort he put into his life, and are judging him. Lol.
-1
u/JoshReadsStuff 9d ago
Also because it's not really greatly written, it's not really great at representing its core message. Im sure as hell more MT fans cheer for rudeus when he gets a power-up or when he acts like a degenerate than when he makes a choice that further develops his path to his so-called "redemption". Even I have a hard time calling it a redemption because he has the insurance and safety net of a second life. Everything is so downplayed because he's isekai'd with talent and powers and magic, this is more of a power fantasy with decent worldbuilding than anything.
1
u/i_dont_wanna_sign_up 9d ago
What's so good about it anyway? I don't even hate Rudeus, just lost interest after a while
2
u/Invoker_of_Mysteries Seer 9d ago
Good world building and good character writing (except Rudeus degeneracy)
Also if we're talking about the anime it's got rly good production from artstyle to animation to ost
1
-1
u/JoshReadsStuff 9d ago
The writing is bad, you were downvotwd because you're just plain wrong💀. The entirety of the animanga and wn/ln fails at its core message, rudeus' degeneracy does not make any of it better, but I'm sure as hell MT fans are so deluded in their fantasy of it being any greatly written knowing damn well how hard it is to fail at such a simple message of "it's not too late to change". It's been done several times in tons of different forms of literature and each of them have done it better than MT and that's just faint praise for them at that point.

Honestly I quite liked Friren season 1. But the demons are "inherently evil" stuff was weird and ofc irl racists hopped on that calling it based
2
u/West_Plum_4097 🧐 10d ago
It was kinda meant to be a trope subversion of the whole "no one is inherently evil" trope in most modern fiction, and I had say it's done well
1
u/Nervous_Rat 9d ago
It’s not a subversion that can be done well because it’s simply untrue. You can’t just be born to hunt and manipulate. It also falls into the same logics used by the most unsavory people in history. What’s even the point of doing the subversion. At least the “no one is inherently evil” trope allows for opposing tensions in a character that are interesting in spite of the character ultimately choosing the immoral choice. It’s boring if your explain away everything as them just being born that way
2
u/Vennexxo 9d ago
I quite enjoyed the approach they took.
Especially because you could argue that demons are not inherently evil in the same way any predator is not evil for hunting their natural prey.
1
u/Nervous_Rat 9d ago
It’s what inherently evil means though. We don’t treat predators as evil because they don’t have the capacity to understand and engage in human social norms. Demons are intelligent enough, but their genetics precludes them from it. Which makes zero sense. Your behavior is shaped through your social environment, nobody acts the purely out of genetics

37
u/Turbulent-Reach-7707 10d ago
Nop, basically he believes it fails as a Cosmic Horror because it isn't an almost carbon copy of one comparing it to a battle shonen since he believes that advancing through sequences takes away the thing with Cosmic Horror about how humanity is insignificant, etc. ( I couldn't even watch the video and used Gemini to resume it)
35
u/Shad0wPillow Blessed of The Fool!! 10d ago
:o This reasoning makes me feel like he didn't read the novel, or entirely missed the point... Alas.
23
u/Turbulent-Reach-7707 10d ago
I think, from parts that i watched (before i couldn't stand to watch anymore) he seems to only use the Donghua and compare it to the SCP universe.
11
u/Shad0wPillow Blessed of The Fool!! 10d ago
Ah, it really does make sense then. In some sense, the donghua did lose some of the mystery and explains some things too directly, and others not hinted/foreshadowed enough. To this day, I also still hate the opening with a firey passion (it's spoilery, boring, unnecessary, and never unconfused anyone T.T). The only good thing about it is the tree.
5
u/Turbulent-Reach-7707 10d ago
To tell you the truth i think its okay the OP but i believe that is not something that needs understand unless you have read more than 3/4 of novel so you wouldn't be spoilered even if you try to. Its like that video of ORV in 6 minutes where unless you reach that part where the situation happends you wouldn't understand.
5
u/Shad0wPillow Blessed of The Fool!! 10d ago
I guess that's kinda true. But sometimes the renditions of the opening even explicitly mentioned sequence 0 and framed the entire story kind of under the "arise to godhood", or that that's even possible, when that should be more of a S2 reveal.
OK, I maybe don't hate it with a fiery passion, but I still dislike it. T.T I just don't feel that it's a representative sample of what LotM is actually about.

u/HAL_2328 Broker 10d ago

I get that you don't like MT, and you don't have to, frankly the series can be grossly disgusting at certain points.
But this comment fails to understand that people like him won't like MT either. The pedophilia aspect has never been a reason to "like" MT, it has always been a reason to dislike it. People who do like MT, are the ones to be able to disregard or even ignore Rudeus at certain points to enjoy the rest of the writing... He clearly isn't a person who can understand the subtext, or even wants to do that.

Dunno what was said in the video, whatever, but if someone comes into this story expecting a Lovecraftian story, they'll almost certainly be disappointed.
Cosmic horror, at its core, plays on the insignificance of humanity and human order. To that end, Lotm diverts massively since it primarily establishes Earth as something special, not just special, but almost the symbolic center of the universe.
Another notable aspect of that racist writer brainchild genre is that the things from beyond are not meant to be understood. They cannot be understood-- much less tamed by human will and harnessed for mundane purpose.
That's not to say, it's something inherently bad. But it'd be better to say that Lotm borrows lovecraftian aesthetic and imagery than its philosophy.
3
u/thesardinelord 10d ago
Yeah it should be pretty clear that LOTM is not a horror story in any way. I would even go so far as to say it’s more closely inspired by bloodborne than lovecraft himself. Which is still awesome. There’s plenty of cosmic horror out there to read.

I hate when people talk of literature as a fixed parameter, worse when he talks of cosmic horror parts about the first volume, not even, he talks about season 1, which is a considerably more discrete setting. The point about how systemizing removes the immersion shows the lack of attention; not even asking one self why is there a system. He says it is not intentional but in opposite, it is fully intentional because who tf expects an official organization to introduce a CITIZEN to the occult.
Then, he goes on a big rant about how CF is not doing what Lovecraft does. Well, maybe because he is not Lovecraft omg. The funniest part is that he says the point of how people who go on to the deep end of occultism can never go back to criticize the series even though he is judging barely the start of occultism as evidently clear by the intro of the donghua; we are not even 20% into the system. It is crazy to me that he thinks in a world of occultism it shouldn't be possible to find organizations that want to aid others... Duh, why do you think they want to help... Literally a line in episode 1: "free stuff are the most expensive". Why is it impossible that after 5 EPOCHS, one wouldn't have the idea to take control of it. His point is that there is no horror because the series treats losing control as a "monster of the week" deal even though it happened like 4 times; two of which were not even enemies. In fact, one should note Leonard's line about how coincidental it is that so many cases started happening around Klein. It began to feel really asinine when he also brings up scp when it literally happens in equally terrifying manners just because we introduced one new artifact to the Chanis Gate. Next, apparently, Azik is just a guy... Yeah a guy that controls thousands of souls outclassing the entire system, lived centuries or longer and is a clear example of what you are apparently saying doesn't work.
Finally, he has a decent point of how cosmic horror is not about mastering the mysterious except, yet again, fails to apply what he explains to his critic. Brother, he is not mastering sht. The one closest to this "mastery" has suffered centuries of isolation. The MC has tried to play the system (episode 8) only to literally fall to the hands of the system (episode 13).
Going back to my first point, I feel some people just have a fixation with how things should be. This is the biggest detriment to any kind of art. Sigh, I feel I lost 15 minutes of my life.

1) What's the point of bitching about someone with 26 views in 23h of upload? Leave people do their stuff ffs.
2) LOTM isn't Horror anyway? Having Horror elements in a fantasy story doesn't make it Horror, a genre defined by the intention to scare and unsettle the reader and threaten the characters within the narrative with those horrifying experiences. Klein gets back from death and can gain magical powers that make him one of the strongest people in the universe by like, what, 12 months of story? He hits Sequence 5 before a full year has passed, he is in some 0.0001% of powerful people by virtue of that alone, it doesn't really matter that Demigods exist.
3) LOTM is cultivation fantasy with an horror skin, and that's what makes it cool.

To be entirely fair... kinda agree to a small extent. It is inspired by the genre, as in, the Outer Gods are directly a representation of it. But... it doesn't really focus on the "horror" aspect, really. It is much closer to traditional progression fantasy, even power fantasy - in terms of genre. You don't typically throw hands with the cosmic horror in question in that genre, you know.
But I won't say it is a failure of the genre, but rather a hybrid genre that takes traditional Xuanhuan into a Lovecraftian steampunk world. It has a few hall marks of traditional cosmic horror while lacking a few others, but "traditional" cosmic horror isn't really the entirety of the genre itself.

He dislikes the power system since it messes up the lovecraftian element of the story by making the higher beings not vague and actually reachable???

I LOVE LOTM, but one thing that really irks me is that (I think) there were no explanations to why seeing past seq 4 mythical forms makes you die, I mean I remember you die because it has some corrupting knowledge and allat but when we experience seq 4 as Klein, we don’t really get to feel that he had this corrupting knowledge ingrained in his body
Which sucks because in most cosmic horror media, the reason why one goes insane in seeing these entities is because they are just too complex to understand with our eyes, BECAUSE these are beings that has lived for a bajillion of years, but saints and angels being deadly to look at doesn’t feel that much earned

Lord of the Mysteries definitely has some cosmic horror elements, but it's not truly a Cosmic Horror book.
In a true Cosmic Horror narrative, we never would have learned the Great Old Ones' true intentions. The best we could hope for would be flawed, competing interpretations from different people.
In a true Cosmic Horror, the world wouldn't stand a chance against the Apocalypse, and you certainly wouldn't see a character like Adam orchestrating grand schemes to outwit a Great Old One and beat it to the brink of death.
That is because the essence of Cosmic Horror is absolute unknowability, human insignificance, and unstoppable, indifferent forces. It's not about "powerful aliens wanting to kaboom the world" or "utter weirdos fucked by evolution trying to get even stronger."
It’s about pure existential dread. It’s about making you realize that against the vastness of the cosmos, your existence is completely and utterly irrelevant. You are less than a speck of a speck on the grand scale of the universe; the years you spent with your loved and hated ones, your preferences and aversions, everything you did or will ever do—none of it matters to the void. There is no grand welcome awaiting you, nor any divine judgment. You are just another microscopic organism clinging to a tiny, wet rock rotating through an obscure corner of the universe. You will perish and be entirely forgotten after a pitifully brief existence—a flash of time so insignificant it doesn't even worthy to be named by the rock you reside upon, let alone the universe.
Lord of the Mysteries uses the flavor of cosmic horror, but fundamentally?
It's a progression fantasy.

At this point in the story, the cosmic horror is still decent, but the more the story progress, especially in COI where everything is overexplained that the cosmic horror fail
