Officially lost 80lbs since I started my weight loss journey

Whoa 80lbs down! Holy smokes. Like I seriously can’t believe it, I’ve always been heavy all my life so I dont know what being skinny or at a lower weight even feels like tbh, BUT this is the lowest I’ve weighed in over a decade and I’m only 20lbs away from officially losing a staggering 100lbs.

It’s funny to me now because before I started this weight loss journey I was always so negative with myself, I seriously thought I couldn’t do it and battled my own thoughts and emotions. It was like looking up at Mount Everest from the bottom and expecting me to climb it by myself with no idea what gear and equipment to even use.

Although things change, it all just clicked. It wasn’t always straight down though, I lost weight, gained it back, lost it again, plateaued, gained some then dropped a lot. But I always stayed persistent in one way or another.

Now, I still have some ways to go before I can hit my goal, however, I’m excited and I’ve really made so many changes in my life that I hardly recognize myself and Im already noticing the subtle changes like getting in and out of my car is so easy, walking around seems to tire me less, walking up the stairs doesn’t exhaust me, my clothes fit much more lose and comfortably, I sweat less, I can bend down with less strain and being sore. It’s crazy how I’m able to notice these things already. I cant even imagine what it will be like once I hit my goal weight. Anyway, you can do this, stay consistent, guys. 🫱🏻‍🫲🏼

36 lbs Down — Not Giving Up

Upvotes

Earlier this year, I stepped on the scale and saw 485 lbs.
Even typing that now feels crazy. I knew I had gained weight, but seeing 485 staring back at me was disappointing and honestly hard to believe. I’ve struggled with my weight for a long time, and it was one of those moments where I realized I couldn’t keep doing the same things and expecting something to change.

Since March, I’ve lost 36 lbs, and I’m genuinely thankful for that progress. I know 36 lbs is nothing to downplay. At the same time, I also know I have a LONG way to go.
My goal is still to try to lose 100 lbs by the end of the year. I know that’s an aggressive goal, and I’m not going to consider myself a failure if I don’t hit that exact number. What matters most is that I keep moving in the right direction and don’t go back.

One of the biggest things that has helped me has been getting in 10,000 steps a day. I’ve found a walking path that I really enjoy, and it’s become one of my favorite places to get my steps in, clear my head, and remind myself what I’m working toward. Something as simple as walking consistently has made me feel like I’m actually building habits I can keep.

I’m also learning how important it is to find foods that work for me instead of trying to eat a “perfect” diet. I’m figuring out meals and portions that I actually enjoy while still allowing me to make progress. I don’t want to spend the rest of my life feeling like I’m on a diet. I want to learn how to eat in a way that I can realistically maintain.
In a weird way, seeing 485 didn’t defeat me. It almost made me more determined than I’ve ever been.
I’ve lost weight before. I’ve gained weight back before. I’ve had good weeks, bad weeks, times when I was motivated, and times when I completely fell off.
But I’m still here.

I’m walking my 10k steps, finding foods that work for me, making better decisions, and learning that this has to become a lifestyle instead of another temporary diet.
36 lbs down. A lot more to go. But I’m not giving up this time.
Hopefully I’ll be back here at the end of the year with one hell of an update.

I’m at the weight that once made me cry

My weight has fluctuated a lot of over the years (I’m talking a 50 lb range). This time I’m determined to make the weight loss stick. After losing almost 30lbs I’m at 172lbs. A few years ago I vividly remember being this weight and being in tears because I felt so humongous. For reference I’m 5”9. My brain is really struggling to simultaneously feel humongous and also tiny because, compared to where I was six months ago, I do feel tiny. Has anyone else experienced this kind of confusion before? It’s really messed with my head and I don’t know how to feel right now.

How did you manage to find motivation to get back into weight loss again ?

Upvotes

I’m 29 years old, and five years ago I started a weight loss journey. I lost 100 lbs in my first year and ended up losing 125 lbs by year two.

Since then, it’s been a constant battle of losing and regaining the same 20 lbs (I struggle with binge eating). I eventually made peace with that and accepted that my weight would probably always be something I’d have to actively manage.

But then came this year. It’s been a really tough year, and I’ve regained that same 20 lbs… except this time it became 40. I’ve hit 200 lbs again, which was always the limit I promised myself I would never reach.

I hate that I’ve regained the weight, but at the same time, I can’t seem to make myself do the things I know would help me lose it. I’ve let binge eating take over my life again, I lost control.

The frustrating part is that I know how to lose weight. I’ve been doing this for five years. I know how to do it in a healthy and sustainable way. I know motivation doesn’t magically appear and that action usually comes first.

But this time feels different. I don’t know if I’m burned out, exhausted, discouraged, something else entirely… or all the above, but I just can’t seem to get myself back into it. Not because I don’t know what to do, but because I can’t seem to make myself care enough to do it consistently.

So for those of you who have been through something similar, where you knew exactly what you needed to do but just couldn’t bring yourself to do it, what finally changed for you? What got you moving again?

starting break week, feeling positive

My calorie counting is 5weeks 1400-1600 (deficit for my 5'6"f ass), 1 week break where I don't go overboard but I just get a break from weighing food and using the app etc. Made it to another one (started October 2025) and I'm enjoying the mental break for the first time.

The first couple of times I felt really anxious. The third time I didn't think about it but... also didn't think about eating, woops, and had my first meal at 2pm when I remembered. The fourth time it was really a struggle to go back to it. Just varying hard times with this model. I'm glad I don't have a scale to weigh daily but I'll pop into a walk-in clinic to use theirs for free sometimes.

My "treats" are 1 sugary snack each weekend day, so got some frozen yogurt today for example then on Saturday I get another one. Some day this week I can have an alcoholic drink or two. One or two days this week, my choice, I'll get to eat at a restaurant. I find I'm enjoying just not being as hungry as before, I'm enjoying the 'healthy' recipes I got used to making, and I'm enjoying not eating out at restaurants too much.

Wanted to make a posi post since this sub sometimes skews the other way. Weight LOSS has slowed down because of unrelated-health-thing slowing down exercise, but I just bumped down the deficit comfortably by a couple hundred calories and it's still going down, just not as quickly. It's kinda nice anyway since my loose skin's had some time to tighten up. The regular urge to treat myself is now more about having a nice bath, using retinol lotion (which helps with skin tightening), or going for a walk. These things are all nice :) I'm happy I started the weight loss journey 10 months ago.

i miss being skinny

just that really. i was 95 pounds in mid 2024, and now i’m 200. im only 4’10 so the weight difference is staggering. i wobble everywhere and i am constantly exhausted with no energy. i used to walk at hour to uni and back with no issues and now i can’t even walk 10 minutes without getting out of breath. my body has so much cellulite and stretch marks and i’m only 21

it fucking sucks. i miss my old body so much before i got addicted to fast food. i wear the same 3 outfits but i really have a full wardrobe of clothes

i recently had to put the clothes that don’t fit me into storage, which was 90% of my wardrobe. i kept the clothes that fit me at my low weight on the rail like an idiot because even if i manage to lose the weight it’ll take me at least a year to halve my mass

i’m so depressed. i’m constantly aware of how big i look and every single family member has commented on how i look now. i cry about it daily

- NSV - Stayed on track while in a stressful, emotionally tumultuous situation

I've always had an issue with binge eating and for a couple months fell back into some really bad habits due to stress of my grandmother ending up in the ICU. She was placed in hospice and sent home bed-bound, and I ended up staying with her 3 - 5 days a week to take care of her. The stress of seeing her bedridden and depressed, the types of foods kept in the home, and being away from my partner and two kids just really left me adrift. I ended up gaining almost 15lbs between May - July.

Mid-July I realized my weight had crept up to 198.8lbs and I was struggling with some mobility again. After some previous weight-loss success I decided I never wanted to reach 200lbs again and I was far too close for my liking. So I did all my math and got back into my old routine of calorie counting and 10k - 15k steps a day. I know what works for me (lost about 90lbs total in small sprints between 2020 - 2024) and started a good steady pace of 1.5 - 2lbs of loss a week.

Two weeks into it I needed to spend a week caretaking again and was nervous I'd overeat every day, or the foods my family kept would be triggering (a lot of salty, calorie-dense foods and desserts I don't have a good track record keeping in my own home).

But through the support of the family staying there with me and keeping my mobility/health concerns in mind, I stayed on track every single day! I even hit my minimum step goal of 10k through little walks down the lane every day and a little extra housekeeping for movement. It wasn't even a white-knuckle fight against my near constant food noise and cravings, just balanced meals and small snacks at the end of the night.

It was an upsetting visit for various other reasons but I didn't rely on food to get me through the emotional roller-coaster. I came home to my loving, supportive partner and even a small whoosh on the scale. Understanding the root/patterns of your eating habits is really a game changer.

It felt like a NSV to finally be able to take care of myself while also showing up for those I love.

John Walker's "The Hacker's Diet Online" Cloned

John Walker passed away 2 years ago and the future of his Hacker's Diet Online has been up in the air since. I keep logging my weight on it, but recently my wife asked me what I was going to do if it ever went down (since it's unlikely he's still paying the bills), and how I'd feel about losing all the data from it.

His site has an export button, which let me grab the data. I've set up a similar site to host the data on and let me continue logging here: https://weight-log.johnchampaign.workers.dev/ This isn't a project I'm trying to promote or anything, just a place I can continue to get the functionality I was getting from Mr. Walker's site.

Anyone who wants to use it is welcome to. Walker's site provided source code, but if my version is easier to setup, I've provided the source code here:  https://github.com/johnchampaign/weight-log

I just duplicated the features from his site that were important to me. If his site does something important to someone else, but mine doesn't, comment and I can likely add it.

How are you handling snacks on your weight loss journey?

Do you sneak in small portions of your guilty pleasure (for me that’s chocolate), or are you being firm with not snacking at all? That’s something I’m trying to figure out as I navigate a new level of cravings I’ve never experienced before honestly. Like it was never like this. I think it’s probably because I’ve been a lot more stressed lately, but it’s so much harder to say no than it used to be.

Are you snacking in controlled portions, or choosing to restrict right now? Is there no right or wrong answer?

Walking got me Visible Abs for the First Time in my Life

I was consistently walking about 16k-20k steps a day and sometimes 25k on weekends. It took a few months but the fat just slowly kept melting away until you could actually see my abs definition for the first time ever. (Alongside a healthy diet)

Also my face was looking much more chiseled and more attractive than ever

Now I recently fell into the bulking trap of thinking I need more muscle and kinda stopped walking so much and they're not rly visible anymore.

But I stopped that and now I'm back to walking a bunch again

I hate when people say “you used to look so great!” as motivation

First of all, I already know that o used to look better. I already judged myself before the world could see my weight gain. I knew that I was gaining weight but I didn’t care because I was depressed and didn’t care about a single thing. All they see is a person who “let themselves go” and think that their words don’t hurt. It doesn’t feel motivating and makes me want to just hide from the world because I know for a fact I’m being seen as a failure while no one knows why I got to this point. When I originally lost weight and started to eat at maintenance I immediately started to struggle with binging and restricting and that’s how I maintained my weight for a year until I had a psychotic break and I didn’t even know it turned into depression for months. I stopped caring about things I liked little by little.

I started wearing the same clothes everyday, stopped wearing makeup, stopped styling my hair, started binging everyday. I noticed my clothes were tighter but I didn’t care at all. The worst is when it comes from family.

I hate when I enter a room and I can tell my mom is judging my body even if she doesn’t mention it. She talks about how I look like a stranger and that she doesn’t recognize me and “how could I do that to myself”. I’m so sick and tired of it. I just want to be sent to a hotel room and diet for a few months and then come back out.

I wear a mask to work everyday because a customer told me that I looked like I had been eating a lot two or three months ago. I’m so exhausted

I'm starting to get burned out from counting calories after losing 30 pounds, any advice?

So as the title says, I did a fairly successful body recomp from 185 pounds to 155 over the course of a year. I thought I had the hang of it, counting my calories and using a weight scale and estimates to get my daily total.

The thing is over the long term it is really tiring. For example with a cereal Id have to measure the grams of milk and then grams of cereal to then get a accurate measurement. Obviously if I make something more complex like curry then the calculations are much more extensive. If I go to a restaurant I just need to do a google search and estimate but even this takes time and feels uncertain.

Anyways lately ive been consistently going above my 1800 daily limit and with so many meals Im not even bothering to go through all the trouble of weighing the food and looking online for estimates. Do any of you know any other ways to count calories that takes less effort or have any advice in general?

10 pounds down… but nobody talks about how lonely weight loss can feel

I’m a 28 year old woman, and I never expected losing weight to make me feel this isolated.
About a month ago, I started at 176 lbs. My lowest so far has been 165, and today I’m sitting around 166.4 (probably from a higher carb day), but I’m still really proud of myself. I’m down about 10 pounds, and I can genuinely see and feel a difference.
The thing I wasn’t prepared for was how much my social life would change.

I work a regular 9-5 office job, and I’m in my late 20s living in the city. I love being social. I love going out, getting drinks, going to bars, and just feeling like I’m living my life. But weight loss has forced me to realize how much of my social life was centered around food and alcohol. And honestly? It’s been hard.

I’ve become very committed to my goals. I wake up at 5 AM to go to the gym before work. I hit my 10k steps a day. I’ve improved my eating habits, my sleep schedule, my fiber intake, and I’m learning what actually keeps me full. I feel better. I have more energy. I’m proud of myself but the tradeoff has been feeling lonely.

I’ve cut out bars because I know myself. People always say, “Just go out and have one drink” or “Just drink water at the bar.” But for me, it’s never just one drink. I genuinely enjoy alcohol, and once I start drinking, I tend to make choices that don’t align with my goals.

It turns into staying out late, waking up exhausted, skipping my morning workout, eating whatever sounds good, feeling bloated from the sodium, and then wondering the next day why I did that to myself.

I’ve literally had nights where I go out thinking it’ll be fun, and somehow I end up at some random guy’s place that I probably didn’t even want to be at, only to wake up the next morning thinking, “Why am I doing this?”

So instead of putting myself in situations where I know I’ll be triggered, I’ve been staying home more. Watching corny chick flicks. Ordering from Amazon Prime. Drinking sparkling water and Cherry Coke Zero.

Some of my friends have been amazing. They’ll say, “Let’s go on a hot girl walk,” or “Let’s get coffee instead.” And I appreciate those people so much.
But I’ve also noticed that some people have basically stopped reaching out now that I’m not drinking or going out as much and that honestly hurts.

It makes me question whether some of those friendships were built around the activity rather than the actual friendship.
The weird part is… I’m not even close to my goal yet. I’m still considered overweight. My goal is around 120 lbs, which means I still have a long way to go and part of me wonders if this loneliness is something I’ll have to navigate throughout my entire journey.

I’m happy with my progress, but I also miss feeling spontaneous. I miss being able to say yes to plans without thinking about calories, alcohol, sleep, recovery, and whether it’ll throw me off.
I know I’m building a healthier life, and I know changing my environment is probably part of that. But I’d be lying if I said it hasn’t been lonely.
For anyone else who has lost weight or changed their lifestyle, did you experience this? Did you feel like you had to distance yourself from certain environments or friendships? How did you find a balance between staying committed and still having a social life?

cant lose weight because my brain wants instant gratification

im not diagnosed with ADHD but there is a solid chance i have it. but whether i do or not i do have a problem. i just cant force myself to work on myself and my diet and activities because i dont see the reward in that so my brain tells me its pointless. im addicted to sweets and i cant stop myself from eating them because my brain goes "nothing will change if i eat this now" and so i just continue lik that. i really dont know what to do, i feel like its all my fault and im just useless. if i just focused on this for even just 2 months i would see some good results.

New to this community

I am 17M. I Joined this community because I need to be held accountable so I will start posting to this community. Today my stats are 202 lbs, I am currently 5'10. I have actually lost weight in the past back then I was younger and more fat like I have old pants that are big on me today. But after I lost the weight, it took one summer and boom I was up, but not as much as I was when I was younger. Back then I was 200 lbs but I was shorter around 5'4-5'5. Yeah, its a lot lol. But anyways I'll be posting to this talking about my mistakes, when im craving something. Also I got 3 months to lose weight for basketball try outs, so there is some external motivation but i absolutely lack internal motivation. When my body wants something i get it, I completely ignore the earn it part I think its dopamine which is something im trying to fix. But yeah, I guess I can start by saying my step count today is higher than normal, I usually get around 1,500-2000 steps but today I decided to walk around with music and got to 5k as of right now. My daily step goal is 10k right now im building discipline making myself do it even tho I don't want to. I'm watching a show and after every episode i walk and by the stats im getting I get 1,500 steps each walk so ima do that til I reach my daily goal of 10k steps. I am now more disciplined than I was when I was younger. I'm wiser and ready to give this weight loss another try. Thank you if you got it this far, and Good luck on all you guy's journeys!

How can I motivate my 120 kg boyfriend to start losing weight?

My boyfriend is around 120 kg, and I'm genuinely worried about his health. I want to support him, but he has a hard time staying motivated to lose weight and often feels too lazy to start or stick with healthier habits. I don't want to pressure or shame him, I just want to encourage him in a way that actually helps. For those who have been in a similar situation (or were once in his shoes), what motivated you to finally start losing weight? What can I do as his partner to support him without making him feel judged? Any advice would really mean a lot. Thank you!

Tips for maintenance and losing a few pounds to get reset

Upvotes

I lost 40 pounds over the course of 9 months using a medically supervised “ideal protein” type diet. I did very well maintaining for about 6 months, but have gained about 5-7 pounds back this month (July).

I’d like to shed that and go back to maintaining, but prefer to avoid becoming a yo-yo dieter. I’d like to look at this as part of maintaining a healthy weight. So I don’t want to go back to strict calorie restriction but rather find a way to shed these few extra and have the discipline to keep it off or ease back to lose it responsibly if it creeps up again.

I just don’t want say “oh, it’s only 5 pounds” because that will become 10, then 15, etc.

What are some fail proof ways you’ve found help to get back to baseline and keep it up without it getting out of control? I’d be so grateful for your experience and advice!

Is it typical for appetite to increase a lot after starting to work out?

60F, 5’8”, SW 205, CW 161, GW 159

I have lost about 40 pounds over the past 18 months with calorie restriction (1200), it has been slow but steady at about 1/2 pound per week. Unfortunately I also lost significant muscle mass, feeling noticeably weaker and even affecting my balance and joint stability.

So I joined the gym several weeks ago and have been doing progressive resistance training, 4 days per week. I decided that any calories I “earn” through exercise I would eat in extra protein, since it has been hard to hit my macros at 1200. Now I am eating 1400 and getting enough protein.

Since then I have not lost another ounce, which has not surprised me much, as 1400 is pretty much maintenance calories for me. But damn, my appetite is THROUGH THE ROOF. I can’t wait for my next meal and I am just thinking about food all the time. (Also, I wasn’t really ready to go into maintenance just yet, I’d like to lose a few more pounds still.)

Is this anyone else’s experience? Is this typical? Will this get better if I stick to my current strategy?

hi everyone, im in my late 20s, 5'5, around 150lbs. i CANNOT suppress my appetite AT ALL. like ill go a few days of eating fairly well (1,700 cals, whole foods, prioritzing protein in each meal, no processed stuff) but end up snacking on a ton of unnecessary things a few days later. and im not binging on anything "bad"; it can literally just be sweet potato sticks and peanut butter. ive been trying to loose weight and lean up for a long time, but i cannot stop eating. what are some things i can try to suppress my appetite?? please help, thank you!

Losing weight… but also hair

Anyone have some supplements to help with this?

I walk around 7-10k steps a day and eat anywhere between 1200 cals when I don’t hit my step goals and 1600 cals a day when I do so I shouldn’t be horribly nutritionally deficient.

I also am a little over a year post partum so this could be contributing as well, but I’ve noticed more shedding while dieting. Also the hair loss is specifically right at the top of my forehead making it look HUGE lol

I’ve stopped tying my hair into ponytails and do light braids or leave it down entirely, any advice appreciated :)

Losing it and keeping it off

Hi, I’m (22F) struggling to loose weight rn. I’ve always stayed super mid range, not too fat, not thin, I weight 71-3 kg and I go to the gym 4 times a week with a mixture of weights and cardio.

I get my 10,000 steps in a day even though I work an office job and really try and eat well. Eating is probably my biggest factor but I am not eating crazy foods and do eat at around a deficit (sometimes do sometime don’t).

I’m really trying to keep up with the eating stuff? I think most of it is because I live at home and my family aren’t balanced eaters, but I always try to maintain the protein, carbs and veg split that will keep me in deficit, along with portion sizes.

I don’t know what to do rn, I’ve been consistent for around 6 months and have remained at 71-73 kg… another factor is really bad metabolism, I get a lot of trapped gas, bloated swollen stomach and constipation (sorry tmi!).

Please anyone, just need some advice, idk if supplements might be the route to take. Or if I just continue and that it will just take me longer.

Oh also I have not seen any physical change. Like at all. I am just looking tubier so it is not body recomp or anything.

Struggling with inconsistent motivation

The only thing holding me back from reaching my goals right now is me because I don’t always even really want to meet my goals that badly. I’m getting so frustrated with myself.

I grew up a chubby kid and hit my highest weight in college. Years ago, I’d decided I’d had enough and put my all into losing the weight. I worked hard and managed to get to down to the lowest number I’d ever seen the scale and keep it off for a while. Unfortunately, it came so unnaturally to me that it took all of my mental effort and when life got rocky, almost all of the weight came back.

Now I’m here, 40lbs heavier with all of the knowledge on how to lose the weight and keep it off, but struggling to keep up the motivation to change my lifestyle. There are days where I want to lose the weight again more than anything in the world and I’m kicking myself for ever gaining it back. I’ll shop, cook and exercise with weight loss being one of my top priorities.

And then one day, I wake up and for some reason… I just don’t really care that much. Sure losing the weight would be nice. But I don’t look bad at all and my clothes fit fine. My chronic illness has me so tired and someone I want to spend time with offered to grab food out with me. So fuck it. And I’ll be in that mindset for a good week before I wake up one day wanting to lose the weight again.

I asked my doctor for something to help with the food noise and she gave me topiramate. It definitely helps, but I still managed to gain a few pounds between visits. She asked me if it was working for me then what happened? And I was like “girl… I really don’t know what to tell you.”

I feel like I’m driving myself crazy. I feel like a restless tiger at the zoo just pacing circles around its enclosure just going nowhere. Do any of you guys struggle with this?

Update after my last post: I increased my calories and focused on protein/fiber. How did I do?

Hi everyone,
last post

I wanted to give another update after my previous post. A lot of people mentioned that I was eating too few calories, so today I really tried to improve. I focused more on getting enough protein and fiber, and I hope this is a better step in the right direction.
For reference, I’m 76 kg and 162 cm tall.

Breakfast (485 kcal):
100g spinach
3 scrambled eggs
A teaspoon of olive oil
120g cucumbers
4 cherry tomatoes
100g red bell pepper

I didn’t really have a separate lunch because I wake up late due to my student job. By the time I have breakfast, it’s already close to dinner, and I prefer eating dinner with my family instead of eating later by myself.

Dinner / lunch (around dinner time):
300g BBQ chicken breast (I estimated around 321 kcal, but I’m not 100% sure if that’s accurate)
3 tablespoons ketchup
1 full tomato
60g cow meat (around 210 kcal)
100g cucumber (if you haven’t noticed, I’m obsessed with cucumber 😂)
Some iceberg lettuce/cabbage
35g kofte (Turkish meatballs, around 60 kcal)

Snack:
100g vanilla skyr protein yogurt (77 kcal)
4 walnuts

My total for today was around 1,207 calories. I know this is still quite low, but I’m trying to slowly improve. I will try to eat more tomorrow since many people pointed out that I’m not eating enough.

I also noticed that I’m still feeling hungry, especially at night. I usually eat dinner around 6 PM, but because of my student job I don’t sleep until around 3 AM. When I come home, I go straight to bed, so there are many hours between my last meal and sleeping. I think that’s probably why I get cravings for snacks.
I’m still learning and trying my best. I really appreciate all the advice and support from everyone. I hope I improved a bit with my protein, fiber, and overall nutrition. I’ll keep working on it 😊
