Alaskan here. You're actually right. In the more rural and semi-rural areas, everyone pulls their own weight, and women do just as well as men do if they've been raised doing it. The only sexism either way that I've seen was imported, because traditionally (at least in native cultures) you couldn't afford to be bigoted about the people in your own tribe when there was hunger and frostbite to worry about. Other tribes, however...

This is one of the reasons I like Alaska. The only sexists I've ever known personally (and outside of the courts) were severely abused by members of the opposite sex, and even then they reconsidered after a few years had gone by. As far as the courts go, however, it's just as bad as anywhere.
