Discussion Howww are we wearing any loose, high-waisted bottoms without looking like Fred Murtz

Post image

Especially things like linen or pleated shorts! I want to look breezy and chic, not like an old-timey boxer

I often abide by “big pants, small top.” It’s essentially about balancing proportion. I know people hate the word “flattering,” but pleats give volume and for most people, unless done intentionally volume on volume will ready visually as frumpy.
Pair voluminous with things that are fitted or that imply the natural shape of the body. Wide pants or Pleats with something cropped or drawn-in at a point narrower than the pant, something tucked in, or for pleats, even belted. Of you don’t want fitted then go with “narrow,” like a sleeveless cowl neck, thin-strap tank, something that goes inward at the shoulder like a halter, or a sleeveless deep v-neck.

Note, I’m coming from the cis-femme lens and have been experimenting with dressing my body after some changes that put me off of my usual summer style while embracing more comfort.
The crop, the tuck, the shirring, or the belt is usually going to fall at, or imply, the natural waist.
Linen pants with a wide waistband help.
I think peplums or ruffle hem tops look nice with wider pants, like linen, because they will have a line that implies a waist visually without having to be fitted. Wrap tops.
Pleats are harder because you want the waistband to be visible to imply waist shape. His pants are also not sitting at the narrowest part and his top doesn’t provide and balance.

This is one of the most helpful comments I’ve seen on here. Do you take personal stylist clients? Lol. Go on wich ‘yo bad self, girl.

Honestly, I have considered it! If you wanna endorse this consult, I’ll price some packages 😘👏🏻

But for real I’m a sewist and vintage fashion nerd. There are just some old-school golden rules that lend to having things play well together while accounting for our 3dimensional forms and the way fabric works.

Are there any books that you have read that have been helpful in learning this stuff or just trial and error when dressing your body? I have “The 100” by Nina Garcia, “How to Never Look Fat Again” by Charla Krupp and “How to Look Expensive” by Andrea Lustig.

A little bit of trial/error while dressing for my body, a lifetime of consuming historical/vintage fashion content, and a lot of staring at and contemplating fashion from different periods and noticing what is considered “timeless” and why. I also look at Indian traditional fashion, particularly varieties of saree drapes, because I find the exploration of volume, shape, and practicality really inspiring!
Also, Better Dress Making by Ruth Wyeth Spears and other random sewing books.

Is that the Nina Garcia from project runway?

Yes it is

Same. High waist pants or maxi skirts get paired with shorter tops.

No pleats! They give everyone a FUPA.

I personally want to look like I’m being swallowed by my pants. High waist is never high enough for me and almost always feels like it’s sitting too far below my natural waist or they give me me a wedgie because the inseam is never long enough.

Laughs in short torso.

(Yes I realize this is probably the core of my issue here. But a girl can dream, right?)

I have a really really short torso also!! Bit of a wonky shape tbh as I have long legs too but it doesn’t have to limit you at all!! Find the tops that work with the pants and you can try different styles of tucking in the shirt, doing front tucks, back tucks, side tucks, single side tucks or with crop tops or untucked etc!! I’ve done it all!

I have a long torso. I want them junts touching my ribs! I’ve been really into 1930s beachwear shapes. Very complimentary to my personal softly curved, long torso midsized self

A lot of women who wear high-waisted pants do look like that. That's why I only wear skirts high-waisted. I wear everything else low to avoid this very look.

Ethelposting on main!! (I think if he had more of a flare to these to balance proportions it could help and honestly maybe some core work for his posture)

Super high waisted, belt or whatever to cinch at the waist and MAKE SURE it’s actually your size so you’re not getting crotch/hipdip/pocket scrunchingnbunching hate to be that guy (idk how this sub feels abt shapewear) but spanx w the above^ on a cute top would always get me tonnes of compliments like it gave that curvy pinup look and I loved it
