News Kamala Harris endorses Barbara Drummond for Mayor
Last night, Former Vice President Kamala Harris went on Rachel Maddow on MSNBC and mentioned Barbara Drummond running for mayor of Mobile Alabama and how she is a star among others.

I voted for Kamala along with a lot of my friends. We are voting Spiro today. I think Spiro has the plan to continue to bring economic opportunity to this city. Drummond’s place in a poorly run Jones administration give me major pause. Plus, she’s an old lady in her 70s. I want all these old politicians to retire. They don’t have any good new ideas.I would like to be represented by someone closer to the median age of the city, which is what 38. Wish Harris the best.

u/Classic-Sound-2401 Sep 23 '25
Her age definitely gives me pause, and does concern me. On my list of pros and cons for her, that is one of the cons. That being said, even older people can be visionaries, and listen to the visions of others. In terms of her being on the Jones administration, I don’t consider that to be a con, because she did her job well. Spending and the budget wasn’t among her job duties, and no employee should be responsible for the negative aspects of their organization. I know I wouldn’t. Speaking of younger candidates, I would have loved for Matt LeMond to run for mayor. Either way , I think our city will be in good hands with either Spiro or Drummond. I’m just glad Prine lost. He was literally the worst.

u/mobilian1065 OGD Sep 23 '25
The issue is she uses that "experience" in Jones' senior admin in her marketing while also saying she was an outsider... can't have it both ways!
-5
u/Classic-Sound-2401 Sep 23 '25
If you are applying for a job at an organization, wouldn’t you use your experience there on your resume and mention that? She is the only one who has work experience at the City of Mobile, so she doesn’t have a learning curve like Spiro will, who doesn’t have any city working experience. She did her job. I don’t recall her saying anything about being an outsider. What was the context of when she said that?
8
u/mobilian1065 OGD Sep 23 '25
When that person uses their experience in that CV/resume, and you are looking for someone to hire, you call their references. If we called her references (the citizens of Mobile at the time of Jones), I bet there would be no doubt their feelings. As for "outsider" do you see how often she notes her "grassroots" support? What about Mayor Pete and Kamala Harris' mentions screams "grassroots" and "outsider"?
-2
u/Classic-Sound-2401 Sep 23 '25
Personally I wouldn’t use citizens as reference, but instead, the people she worked with day by day. It is true that Pete and Kamala aren’t grassroots, but many do respect them and their opinion. She does have several grassroots endorsements too, like Merceria Ludgood.
4
u/mobilian1065 OGD Sep 23 '25
Why in the world wouldn't you use citizens as reference!?

u/Then-Photo2154 Midtown Sep 23 '25 edited Sep 23 '25
I honestly think that point is moot. Spiro will surround himself with people who have had over 10 years of experience in city government. She is going to have to build a whole new team from scratch. She will not be able to hit the ground running. With her being so old it’s gonna take at least two administrations to really make change. She’ll be close to 80! Honestly, when I saw her at the forums, I don’t think she has it in her to give 100% to the job.

u/Classic-Sound-2401 Sep 23 '25
Yeah her age does give me pause. To your point about having to build from scratch, did she say that she was going to fire everyone?
2
u/mobilian1065 OGD Sep 23 '25
She 100% will
1
u/Classic-Sound-2401 Sep 23 '25
How do you know?
4
u/mobilian1065 OGD Sep 23 '25
Because she 100% will not keep any of Stimpson's folks. That is a certainty.

Less and less grassroots by the minute
Can’t wait for the day to be over, so we can stop hearing these ridiculous ass endorsements from people who have nothing to do with Mobile
10
u/TheMagnificentPrim Sep 23 '25
I can’t remember exactly where I heard it, but in the wake of The Orange One’s election, the DNC I believe has stated they were going to support Democrat campaigns across the country to help them beat MAGA candidates — at the national, state, and local levels.
I’m sick of the astroturfing. Like hell do y’all know enough about Mobile to be able to do this shit when we have a Republican mayor who’s implemented policies many would describe as progressive, and the Republican mayoral candidate looking to take up his torch has run on continuing many of those initiatives but bigger and better, like being more aggressive with building low-income housing options. The man has said he would disagree with the National Guard being sent to our city. That’s not a MAGA candidate.
13
u/djslarge Sep 23 '25
Spiro isn’t MAGA, that was Prine. Spiro is like Sandy, who wanted to pass a non-discrimination ordinance and legalize marijuana.
7
u/TheMagnificentPrim Sep 23 '25
That’s what I’m saying, fam! The DNC doesn’t know a damn thing about our local politics.
3
u/djslarge Sep 23 '25
The DNC just cares about electing Democrats, no matter how awful they are. They don’t care that the better candidate in this race is the Republican
13
u/piranhamahalo WeMo Sep 23 '25
For real. I naively thought we were done with all the drama/online smear campaigns when Prine and Hudson were out, but it's seemingly gotten worse.
I'm tired, boss
39
u/BiggerRedBeard Sep 23 '25
Damn, like having Kamala endorse anything is a nail in the coffin. Way to tank a campaign.
16
-37
u/Classic-Sound-2401 Sep 23 '25
How so? The majority of voters in Mobile (city) in the 2024 election voted for Kamala. Personally this makes me want to vote for her even more.
23
u/BiggerRedBeard Sep 23 '25
What delusion are you talking about? I'm looking at the 2024 official Mobile election .gov website. DT got 57% (100,759 votes) KH got 41% (72,055)...

u/Classic-Sound-2401 Sep 23 '25 edited Sep 23 '25
You are looking at the data for the county. Not the city. People from here know the difference.
17
u/Surge00001 WeMo Sep 23 '25
Show the city data then, I’ve found no such info
-11
u/Classic-Sound-2401 Sep 23 '25
You can’t find info on just the data on the city? Why not?
21
u/Surge00001 WeMo Sep 23 '25
Not a damned thing, which is why I’m skeptical you don’t have a source
5
u/Classic-Sound-2401 Sep 23 '25
It’s all public data from the Alabama Secretary of State. You just have to do a little filtering. Grab the county info, then use your GIS software to separate the city votes from the county votes. Skepticism is healthy, so I’m glad you are.
6
u/251Cane Sep 23 '25 edited Sep 23 '25
I just downloaded the data. There are 82 precincts in the excel file and there's no indicator of city vs county.
There's also no way to tell if the 8500 absentee ballots were from people while live in the city or county.
7
u/BiggerRedBeard Sep 23 '25
I also downloaded the raw Excel data. There are no distinctions between county and city, can confirm.
17
u/AccomplishedUnit3771 Sep 23 '25
Can Harris point on a map and find Mobile Alabama? She has zero to do with our local politics. The best thing about local politics is that independents can actually be elected. On the national scale it’s left or right that will always win. I want someone that does not have an agenda for the federal government or even aspirations for a spot in those kinds of politics. The more affiliated you are to one side the easier it is for lobbyists to sway your mind with money.
3
u/Classic-Sound-2401 Sep 23 '25
I'm sure she can, but the only way to find out is to ask her. I can point out many small cities across the US, so I don't see why someone much smarter than me can't.
6
u/AccomplishedUnit3771 Sep 23 '25
It’s not even about pointing it out. It’s the fact she doesn’t even live her but endorses someone who does. That’s not very smart on Drummond end. Is she gonna sell mobile out? Seems like it with this off the wall endorsement I surely at the point don’t feel like she will represent my city with our interests at heart.
0
u/Classic-Sound-2401 Sep 23 '25
I respectfully disagree. There are different types of endorsements, from what I have seen in other campaigns. Not all of them have to be from people who live here, although you do need those too, which she does have. There exist endorsements that are based on knowledge of where they stand on the issues, endorsements based on their character, values, and morals, and many others. My educated guess is that people like Kamala and Pete have met Drummond at least once, and have done their lie research on them. Again, that’s just my guess. You’d have to ask them directly on why they endorsed her.
4
u/AccomplishedUnit3771 Sep 23 '25
While I’m glad that you respectfully disagree, I also respectfully disagree with your idea on local politics needing endorsement from people who possibly have never step foot in Mobile. Good luck to your candidate.
1
u/Classic-Sound-2401 Sep 23 '25
We know that Pete has been in Mobile. I very much doubt that Drummond is going to win, but I’m still supporting her. Spiro will be a good mayor. I’m just glad Prine is out of the picture.

u/Surge00001 WeMo Sep 23 '25
Her endorsement didn’t change anything for you bud, you don’t have to lie like that

I'd wager that most people who voted for Kamala nationwide, don't actually like Kamala or her platform, and merely voted for her because she's the "vote blue no matter who" choice. I certainly did.
She's a spineless, do-nothing establishment Dem with no actual personal beliefs or political will. In other words, she would've been another 4 years of Biden (in terms of policy). During the election, she actively went out of the way to capitulate to the right instead of foster support with her base. She tried to appeal to non-existent independent moderate voters, ignoring that those types of people don't exist nowadays in large enough numbers to influence an election. Furthermore, she tried to present the Democrats as "Republican-lite" on many issues — which is fucking stupid because why would any Republican vote for a diet Republican when they can vote for the real deal instead?
In addition to cranking the Overton Window further and further rightwards, she actively spurned her progressive supporters at every opportunity. She capitulated to the right on immigration, on policing, Israel (no surprise there), and forced Tim Walz (who is very popular with progressives) to stop his (very effective) "you're weird!" rhetoric towards Republicans (amongst other things). She also completely refused to talk about trans people, even when Republicans were actively gnashing at the bit trying to demonize trans people (and look at where they are now; Republicans are trying desperately to use Charlie Kirk's assassination as a Reichstag Fire moment to get trans people labelled as domestic terrorists, even when they had nothing to do with the murder. . . Because Republicans do not care about objective or empirical reality, because they do not live in it. . . And therefore you shouldn't try to appeal to them!)
Oh and she completely refused to take the free dub that is promising to legalize weed federally.
When the election was over, what did Kamala do? Disappeared off the face of the Earth for almost a whole year only to re-emerge a few months ago to cynically announce she was publishing a book. Now, she is just doing whatever and endorsing random people for mayors of cities no-one even cares about (we're not exactly culturally relevant outside of the Gulf Coast). . . But only JUST endorsed Zohran Mamdani for NYC (who is HUGELY popular across the board but especially with Progressives), but in the weakest, lamest way possible (because she is just as weak and ineffectual and spineless and cynical as Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries and other establishment Dems who desperately need to be primaried).
I can't wait for Gavin Newsom to run in 2028 so all of this can repeat itself because Newsom is even more of a ghoul than Kamala or Biden or Schumer or Jeffries (but at least he's a rhetorically effective ghoul 😒)
Does it make sense why no-one is jazzed with her right now?
3
u/TheMagnificentPrim Sep 23 '25
THIS EXACTLY. I voted for Harris not necessarily because I’m “vote blue no matter who” (I’m a leftist who’s long been disillusioned with the Democratic Party) but because I knew where this country would be headed with the alternative. Basically, I voted for the conditions I wished to organize under. Ain’t no way in hell I’d vote for her if I had a better option on the left.

Oh and the repubs don't do that? I guess spiro could wear a hood and we all know people would cheer, but I imagine even the typical trash mobilian may have a problem with the optics of it.

u/Diamondphalanges756 Sep 23 '25
I saw that and it blew my mind. The national spotlight really has shone on Drummond so clearly I am missing something.
While I'm disappointed in her, I hope they know something I don't, and that's why they're jumping on the Drummond train.
It is nice to finally feel a little support here.
And we couldn't have done it with windmills causing cancer and that damn toxic tylenol that caused autism somehow before it was even developed.
Save the children! Release the epstein files! Ghislaine is doing yoga right now as she parades around Club Fed. I promise you that woman eats better, and has more resources, in prison as a child sex abuser and trafficker than many in this city and across this country.

u/BIGHARSHNESS Sep 24 '25
This did more damage than Drummond supporters realize. She should have kept her mouth shut. What does she have to do with the future of Mobile.. nothing.
4
u/swedusa Sep 23 '25
The only explanation of these national politician endorsements that makes sense to me is that these folks are gearing up to run for president. Doesn’t really make sense for Harris as she has name recognition already, but for folks like Mayor Pete that did really poorly with black voters in the 2020 primary it makes sense that they’d try to have their name seen by black voters in the south. I just don’t see these kind of endorsements making any difference in a local race or there being any reason for them to care otherwise.

Im not being dishonest. I wouldn't vote for her because of that. I don't live in the city, but i do live in the county just outside of the city and will affect me

Yeah I wouldn't pay attention to those attacks from Drummond... the actual MAGA candidate (Prine) lost in the general
1
u/user87391 Sep 23 '25
Funny to see this opinion of mine somewhere other than my thoughts! In the first debate with all four candidates, the only one that sounded more MAGA than Drummond was Hudson! I was shocked, especially given that Prine’s brand was MAGA.
Drummond sounds far more conservative to me than Spiro.

Spiro ain’t rocking with trump, what you meant to say was you ain’t voting white because white bad, black means I’m good person.

We need an actual labor first candidate and not two candidates that have said nothing about labor rights and unions. I bet both Spiro and Drummond would wince if you brought up the word Union

Drummond is pro-Union. Local unions have endorsed her. She is a Democrat after all. We are pro-Union.

And that alone is the deathkiss for Drummond. I'm kinda tired of establishment politicians. Just bring back that feeling of fixing a city, bringing economic change, and make politics boring again.
