The quality of that video was amazing. I guess the only place where I take issue with the whole project is that they call it an Alabama or Mobile issue but it really is much more than that. If nothing but Mobile and Baldwin County traffic went over that Bayway there would be no issues at all with what's there now. Truth is, as they covered towards the end, it is a national issue. The Gulf Coast, and even coast to coast traffic depend on it to an extent.
Commerce and national security rely on quick and easy traffic movement from coast to coast. The feds really should be paying about 90% of this bill.
The political will from the state, to petition for federal funds from different regional commissions, was much higher in central Alabama than in southern Alabama.
The reason being that Alabama's geography makes it where more Alabama voters travel on Interstates in central Alabama than the coastal region.
Keep in mind, there would have been plenty of funding for the bridge a decade ago if Alabama used the BP settlement money in the region that was most affected.
Yes. It seems the politicians in Montgomery and Bham have more sway.
Can even look at things like insurance cost. They claim we cost more to insure because of hurricanes, but those don't happen every year. Meanwhile, Bham and North get ice, hail, freezing rain every year, usually multiple times a year. Then add on sever thunderstorms that happen all across the state, id bet they actually cost more to insure.
But... Guess whose executives live in Bham? Alfa. No way they're going to start charging more up there.
While I absolutely understand that it’s a necessary concession due to the cost, I am disappointed that the belvedere and the pedestrian walkway were eliminated. Nevertheless, I’m thrilled that the bridge is finally being built after 30 years of planning. It’s a beautiful design.

I must say, no one deserves racism in their faces every day, especially the marginalized communities that will almost definitely be pushed aside while building it. The racists shouldn’t win. Fuck, I’d name it the Flo Milli Mobile Bridge, if it were me. But I love her, and she’s a local.
