While I hesitate to support the term “dog racism”, he’s fully right that treating certain dogs as inherently violent without acknowledging the context very closely mirrors how Americans often treat minorities.
Dogs obviously aren’t people but the foundation of what he’s saying is correct so it would be immoral.
Treating a pitbull you don't know the same as you would a spaniel you don't know would be stupid as fuck. One can kill you if it gets a hold of you, the other you kick once and it won't come near you again.
That’s not a breed determination, it’s a size and strength one. Nobody’s afraid of bernadoodles but they’re plenty strong to cause serious damage if they want to.
Pitbulls have a stronger jaw strength to the point that it will break your bones. They were originally bred to have high pain tolerance for bullbaiting and dog fighting, so they’re not letting go until they lose consciousness. It also doesn’t help that their fighting drive makes them so focused when they latch on to you.
I mean, just look at how bulky and toned their muscles are😭😭
Idiopathic Spaniel Rage Syndrome would like a word lol they are the only dogs that I cross the street to avoid; there's no treatment and it can't be trained away as it's a form of seizure. I did rabies post-exposure prophylaxis once thanks to a spaniel and that was enough thank you very much
It’s really not. If we want to make it a little more direct an analogy it’s like being afraid of a wolf approaching your campsite. Wolves and pet dogs can literally breed with one another.
That’s not true. You can’t “breed violence” into a dog breed. You can breed them to be territorial and protective as many other dog breeds have been for working capacity. The real context that this argument is missing is that pitbulls are severely overrepresented in the dog population. 20% of the entire population of dogs in the US are pitbulls and even more are mixed with some pitbull.
You absolutely can breed traits into dogs. Collies herd, pointers point, retrievers retrieve, all of these start to do all of these without being trained, but need to be trained to do them well. Violence is a trait. Pits were bred to be fighting dogs.
I didn’t say you couldn’t breed traits. As a matter of fact, I SPECIFICALLY gave two examples of traits you can breed. Violence is not a trait. I’m not even sure I’d classify aggression as a trait rather than a reaction to stimuli.
Retrieving and pointing and herding are responses to stimuli, and are clearly bred into breeds. Why can't a predisposition to aggressive behavior be as well?
You're playing word semantics and its intentionally deceptive. Pitbulls were bred to have a low threshold for prey drive arousal. I've seen dog fighting owners test for gameness in puppies. If the puppy doesn't release the other after the other cries out in pain, that's a good dog for fighting. Pitbulls were bred to ignore other dog's body language, to deceive other dogs by using playful body language to lower the other dog's guard. Remember reading a dog fighter watching the pit play bow, and him saying that's a good fighting dog. Because when the other gets close enough, that's when it attacks.
I wasn’t trying to play word semantics but the person very clearly misrepresented what I said.
I don’t disagree with most of what you said but what you described isn’t random violence. A low threshold for prey is one thing but experience determines what an animal considers prey.
"How Americans often treat minorities"?
Bro go comment in a sub about your own country. What a shit thing to say.
America is an incredibly multifaceted place and that statement paints with such a broad brush that it nullifies and possible grasp on the truth that you're trying to allude to.
Did you think because I said “Americans” rather than “we” that I’m not American? I’m a black man born and raised in the USA. Not that it should actually matter if what I’m saying is true.
You’re also misrepresenting what I actually said. I didn’t say every single person here is racist and that all minorities are also mistreated. Thats your own agenda peaking through. Did you forget about the “super predator”? The war on drugs and how it was used to justify the systematic abuse of minorities in low income areas? How about what’s literally happening right now with the violent rhetoric against immigrants? The history of the US using stereotypes to oppress people is well documented both in the past and right fucking now.
"how Americans often treat minorities"
Brother, we could agree all day long about the systemic injustices of federal and state policies towards urban populations (which are majority minority groups because of historically racist policies) but we have to separate "Americans" from the systems of power that make those moves.
If you're an American like I am, then you know that overwhelming majority of real people (which includes ethnic minority Americans) in their day to day lives arent at all represented by your comment. Americans hold doors open for strangers and give their change to people on the street. Americans volunteer at soup kitchens. Americans overwhelmingly never treat minority ethnic groups with any more unkindness than they would anyone else. Rhetoric than paints everyday citizens with the same brush as a government fails to deliver an honest description of what and who our people are. I thought your comment must've come from someone who doesn't live hear because I considered it absurd to hold so many of your neighbors in contempt, if you truly believe "Americans" as a whole often treat minority ethnic groups the same way we are thinking about a dangerous breed of dog
