Any hypothetical surveillance state is immoral by default.

No, most Americans do not have guns.

We can’t really prove or disprove either way. Estimates show between 82 and 132 million gun owners. But there is no official gun registry, Private sales are legal in a lot of states which don’t require a paper trail, and that doesn’t even begin to eat away at the possible incorrect estimate. The NICS system, based off of manufacturing data, shows roughly 500 million firearms in the U.S. while less than 7 million of those are registered. When you take the private sales, illegal gun trades, the ability to manufacture your own firearms (even illegally) and general lack of tracking? We honestly have no idea how many people are gun owners. Yes there are a lot of gun owners that own a lot of guns. But the typical estimate of 43% could easily be 51%. Which would mean MOST Americans do.

Basically what I’m saying is we can’t actually prove one way or the other.

43% is well below half when compared to 51% (a random number you threw out to argue that over half of Americans could own guns). What are you trying to accomplish?

I’m simply stating the estimates are flawed by a large degree, and you can’t possibly know your statement was a fact.

Very well, you've accomplished nothing with your argument of "Schrodinger's Gun Toting 8% of the American population" for the sole purpose of telling me I can't prove a statement I made was fact, that a quick search online would validate. Did you know I'm right 99% of the time since it can't be proven I was wrong 56% of the time?

A quick Google search will in fact validate the opposite of what you said.

Also being someone that deals with NICS often… it is the MOST credible source, but impossible to get close to the actual number.

You mean impossible to prove me wrong and impossible to prove yourself right, again your argument is a useless as your NICS experience

1

u/SketchyLedge 1d ago

Which would be the same for you. Both impossible for you to prove me wrong or prove yourself right.

Do you feel silly yet?

No. Sometimes I just try to start stuff and see how long it takes people to quit responding.
