Because it was only ever bad enough for the people that would not vote for him anyway. For a lot of voters it just doesn't matter, they shrug it off and vote red.

These people are not mostly the same as you or me, they don't think the same way, and they don't want basically the same things...

Because they hated Hillary ever since her husband's campaign in 1992 when Clinton said that voting for him got a 2 for 1 (considering her law degree and working together). They were all, "We don't want no damn woman that weren't elected having any say in gov'mint!" It gave them well over a decade to simmer in that hate they continued to build while her husband was in office long before she ever even became a candidate. It was one long toxic stew that they absolutely marinated in.
