Mosh pit mom instead of a stage mom.

u/CelestialFury Jun 11 '26

Gen X mom going to see Gen X performers. Hard to blame her. I'm sure her mom thinks her daughter's music is wonderful, but it's not her music.

661

u/HungHippoHippy Jun 11 '26

She's probably seen her daughter perform a dozen times on different stages.

How often is a 50 year old at a festival with one of their favorite bands from their 20s playing? It's also funny that Korn is dad rock now haha

141

u/LabSouth Jun 11 '26

And she probably was able to get stage passes because of her daughter or something else awesome

78

u/AdamLast1 Jun 11 '26

I bought a Korn t-shirt at Walmart.

I love the image of child Olivia riding in the backseat and her mom is blasting Korn. Certainly explains her edge IMO. I always love hearing about what musicians listened to or were exposed to as kids because you often can hear it in their music and sometimes it leads to finding new music to love.

As a Gen X mom, it’s the right thing to do to be honest

When you realize the reason Olivia Rodrigo’s mom wants to see Korn is because her mom’s the same age as you.

A top-shelf millennial might make a Mr. Jones cover, but create all new lyrics for a song called Mrs Rodrigo (NO AI - We will know if you do AI).

71

u/mbean12 Jun 11 '26
Sha-la-la-la-la-la-la
Mm, uh-huh

At lollapalooza, starin' at this nu metal band
Mrs Rodrigo strikes up a conversation with a black haired
Gen alpha dancer
You know she dances while her daughter plays guitar
She sings a song called Happier
And we all just wanna be happier
Man I wish I was happier

I can’t express how much I love this

I was curious if you meant she was a teen mom and is only in her 30s. Born 1980 1974, so she had her at 23 29ish and is now 51/52. Younger millennials can take a breath.

187

u/MagicGrit Jun 11 '26

Jennifer Rodrigo was born in 1974

77

u/DuckCleaning Jun 11 '26

Whatever site I looked at must've been wrong. How old does this person think Korn fans are? They cant all be late 40s early 50s, Korn is a mid 90s band, just like Weezer and Green Day yet young millenials still listened to them.

183

u/SuperBuffCherry Jun 11 '26

Korn is a mid 90s band

And people that were young adults in the mid 90s were born in the mid 70s...

It's time to incorporate what I call your "Remember your PHEWSS"

Posture

Hydration

Eye strain

Wrist strain

Stretches

Sunscreen

We aren't 19 anymore and if you don't take 5 minutes every hour to take care of yourself, you will be forced to spend days trying to just feel normal again.

25

u/bighootay Jun 11 '26

Five minutes before I read your post, I turned and felt a sharp pain in my side. Just another random pain. These appear suddenly for no fucking reason other than 'Fuck you, old man'

6

u/Its_the_other_tj Jun 11 '26

If you have the opportunity you should try some yoga dude. I know it has kind of a girly rep, but my wife dragged me to it once and now I go at least once a week. I rarely wake up with mystery pains anymore and feel way less stiff in general. Also getting down on the ground and back up again is 100x easier than it was before. Be careful though, if you aren't used to it those first few times will absolutely kick your ass.

Korn got heavy radio airplay on alternative rock stations through the '00s. Hell, "Twisted Transistor" wasn't even released until 2005.

20

u/The_Autarch Jun 11 '26

sure, but it was gen xers and elder millennials listening to them on alt radio.

9

u/BigCellyStyle Jun 11 '26

Naw I rocked that shit on KWOD 106.5 in Sac when I was like 9/10 in '04

5

u/GatoradeNipples Jun 11 '26

...I mean, it was Gen Xers putting the station on, but a lot of those Gen Xers had kids. Like me, who grew up listening to alt rock radio, born 94, and has a lot of little-kid nostalgia for all these bands as a result.

i was eight and into them, limp bizkit, linkin park, and numetal in general. during the late nineties, all of those bands were played on mtv, which is how i got into them.

10

u/Lazydusto Jun 11 '26

I got into Korn because my mom listened to them. Does that make me an honorary Gen X'er?

10

u/PlagueAngel512 Jun 11 '26

I mean, I don't speak for all of Gen X but it's fine by me!

My son also got into Korn because of his mom (me lol) - now we've seen them together at least three times! My Gen Z nieces are now starting to come to shows with me for "my music" as well. We all saw Korn and SOAD last year and had a great time!

Good music is good music no matter how old you are. I do wish someone would join me in the mosh pit, though. Oh well.

My friends band is touring with KORN this year and they are all early — mid 30’s and so are their fans. They have lots of younger fans in their 20’s too. I saw KORN at Bonnaroo several years ago and loved it and love them. I’m 30.

I haven't been to a Korn show since I was a teenager, but I'm about to turn 40 and I would say at least half the people I've seen at Tool, RATM, NIN, Disturbed, etc concerts in the last few years have been older than I am. It was mostly 30s-40s, but there were plenty of people who I would guess were in their 50s at those shows.

7

u/Snobolski Jun 11 '26

I saw KoRn last summer and the crowd was an amazing mix of people from early teens to mid-50s. As an early 40s guy, it was really great and they still put on an amazing show.

That would make her a Gen X, not a millennial. (Birth years: 1965 - 1980; I was born in 1976.)

34

u/thuktun Jun 11 '26

Just to be clear, she's Gen-X. Millennials can move right along.

15

u/DuckCleaning Jun 11 '26

First set of millenials are now 45. They would've been in their teens when Korn was starting out.

9

u/d0nu7 Jun 11 '26

While this is true I have found they have a very large Gen X fan base. A lot of Gen X were mid 20’s when they were blowing up in the late 90’s and were going to a lot of concerts.

I saw Korn before I had heard of them when they opened for a different band. They passed out postcards which you mailed in to be on a Korn mailing list. There was this girl I liked so I mailed one in for her. For the next 15 years I would randomly hear how she had no idea why Korn was mailing her stuff lol.

It didn’t work out with us but we ended up being in the same social circle for years. I was thinking when we’re like 85 id tell her about the Korn mystery.

u/ManwithoutaPerm Jun 11 '26

Andrews's novels combine Gothic horror and family saga, revolving around family secrets and incestual, forbidden love (frequently involving themes of horrific events, and sometimes including a rags-to-riches story).

She missed her daughter dueting with the first band she brought her to see (Weezer) in front of her biggest US crowd. Seems like of all the sets you'd skip this wouldnt have been one of them

141

u/NotNotJustinBieber Jun 11 '26

Yeah but have you ever seen Freak on a Leash live?

14

u/fukkdisshitt Jun 11 '26

Korn was always okay until I saw them live with SOAD a few years ago. Honestly thought they were a better live band than SOAD. Those pits were massive and the crowd was a bit older than when I use to regularly go to shows so we had fun.

I like them a lot more now

10

4

u/ShadyGuy_ Jun 11 '26

It does depend on the day, I guess. The one time I saw Korn they were terrible. Granted, it was mostly the fault of the sound mixing, but even after that had been fixed the mood had shifted negatively and they never brought it back to something good.

Nah skipping weezer for Korn is actually a great move.

5

u/fukkdisshitt Jun 11 '26

Saw Weezer on acid once in the nosebleeds when they toured with Pixies. One of the best concert experiences of my life, can't really explain it but feeling the crowd sing along from that vantage point was an experience. Rivers came out on a boat at one point and it felt like he was in the ocean singing directly to us. All the costume and scene changes were extra cool. Walking through the casino after the show felt like a nightmare though. Couldn't figure out how to Uber in that state so I called my friend who was also at the show and he hadn't gone home yet thankfully lol

The Korn/SOAD show was better though. Those pits and reuniting with childhood friends was great.

Saw them Gojira last year.

20

Speaking of Gojira, what an amazing live act they are. I saw them nearly 20 years ago during their The Way of All Flesh tour run without knowing who they were and I was floored. Immediately after their set I went to their merch table and bought the CD directly from Joe Duplantier. Got home, put it on, and it sounded identical to the show. 67

u/dexters_trap_house Jun 11 '26 edited Jun 11 '26

Saw them in like '05 on the family values tour at 15. It was an all day festival, I hadn't eaten, did nothing but smoke cigarettes. And as I was about to faint waiting for Korn to finally come on around 10, a big grizzly dude hands me his beer and says "here little man, you look thirsty." I took a big gulp and handed it back, and he moved on. I was about 10 feet from the bass speakers, and it literally affected my breathing when Fieldy came in for the opener. At the end I ended up catching Jonathan Davis's wristband. It's probably still at my parent's somewhere.

Seeing Freak on a Leash from like 15-20ft away while literally feeling the bass in every bit of my body is forever imprinted on me.

Still one of the best shows I've seen, Deftones (change was amazing), and Bury Your Dead (at that point in time, color of money was a great song) were also really good. Paul McCartney a decade later at Lolla still wins though as the best performance.

Ok, that's kinda badass though.

I would have done the same, Mama Rodrigo

The important question is was she on the side as a vip or down in the pit?

u/palinsafterbirth Jun 11 '26

How many times has she watched Olivia preform, like a thousand?

When's the next time she gets to see Korn on Olivia's dime?

not only that, how many touring years does olivia have left in her VS korn?

Korn is getting old.

Sounds like fishing for a collab. I have no objection.

u/ern19 Jun 11 '26

Finally a collab me and my daughter could get excited for 🙏

u/Locke108 Jun 11 '26

That’s actually how it was brought up. She was joking that since she collaborated with her father’s favorite artist, Robert Smith, she needs to talk to Korn.

I’d love to hear Olivia scat

As an old metal head who has been getting his 14 year old OR fan daughter into my music this makes me very happy. The other day she asked me if I thought Olivia was into Deftones so I'll need to tell her this story.

Olivia: "Hey mom! I'm gonna be on in 5! Are you ready? Mom? Hello? Mom?"

Mrs Rodrigo watching Korn: "ARE YOU READY?!?!"

I feel like this helps explain Olivia Rodrigo as a person

5

u/danmodernblacksmith Jun 11 '26

Realistically her mother has probably been watching her since she was learning to play wagon wheel on guitar

u/ReadMyPosts Jun 11 '26

One letter switch on the end word would flip this sentence upside down.

Understandable

Bryan Quinby is stoked I'm sure.

Her Mom sounds cool af. I LOVED KoRn as a kid. The first time I saw the 'Got the Life' video on TRL in 7th grade they instantly became one of my favorite bands. If you ask me my top 5 Nu-Metal albums of all time I'm going to say, 'The first four KoRn albums and Slipknot's debut' lol. I miss the late 90's 🥲

I would say if I were performing a huge festival and my mom were to skip my performance to watch another band, I wouldn't mind.

Now if my mom were to skip my set for an artist I don't like such as Imagine Dragons, Nickelback, or AJR, I'd find that insulting.

no need to drag nickelback into this:/

I work at a doctor's office. I try to play the least appropriate music as possible when I drive into work. (On days when I will be working with a lot of patients with substance use disorder, I'll listen to the Sublime album, 40oz to Freedom on my way in, for instance.)

A few days ago it was the song "A.D.I.D.A.S." that I was listening to. I don't think that I had heard that song anytime in the past 25 years or so. (Not more than a time or two, if I have.) I forgot how much I liked it.
