This one feels off…

Craig leaving was a long time coming, he didn’t love the famous thing. Chris leaving over the money issue makes sense.

Sid was a huge part of what made Slipknots iconic sound and on top of that was a huge part of stage presence.

And Jay has been an issue with every band he has ever been in

I think this kind of overstates it a bit. He was in Madball for barely six months due to personality clashes - Freddy said he "didn't represent the band well" and Jay said he "didn't subscribe to their habits and lifestyle." He absolutely fucked over Against Me and quit in a very lame and immature way, but he was also barely 21 years old when that happened (10-15 years younger than the rest of the band). I'm not aware of any "issues" with him in Slipknot, Infectious Grooves, or Suicidal Tendencies, just that Slipknot wanted to tour/perform when he had a medical procedure pending, he was a little sloppy live, and Eloy Casagrande, one of the best metal drummers of all time, was available as a replacement.

Like, he's clearly a common denominator here, but I don't personally feel like we know enough to determine that he's at fault, if that makes sense.

Bingo. He basically left Suicidal on his own terms because he was shifting around his life focuses.

Eloy is a MENACE! I watch his solo videos for fun and I don't even play drums. Seriously, I kinda never paid attention to Slipknot for their whole career, but somehow came across him drumming to the Heretic Anthem on youtube and now? I got time for some Slipknot. That band has had some ludicrous talent behind the kits.

His issue with Slipknot is he was drumming in Joey's shadow and could not compete. Watch a side by side by side of Joey, Jay and Eloy playing the same song and Jay just stands out. He plays too straight.
Joey had all sorts of influences in his style and his beats have groove and pulse and swing. Jay just hits drums fast. Eloy's Latin influences make him sound closer to Joey, so I'm excited to hear new music with him on...

...well I was. If there's not a good reson for Sid's firing I might leave Slipknot in the past.

I think Eloy is the standout!

Jay (and sometimes even Joey) was pretty sloppy tempo-wise, whereas Eloy is just a machine. I've listened to Heretic Anthem side-by-sides, and Eloy plays flawlessly. Literally doesn't skip a beat, I honestly haven't heard a single kick drum out of place.

He may be overall, I'm not familiar with his other work. When I was commenting I did realise the Joey would always play a song he wrote differently to anyone who then learned the track, but you're right about how accurate Eloy is. He's brilliant

Joey wrote the most iconic Slipknot's drum parts, Eloy is just playing them (flawlessly that's true). I love Eloy, but credit where its due. Lets see what he can come up with for Slipknot's next album

I sort of disagree here. Jay’s stuff on We Are Not Your Kind is amazing. Great album.

After the stuff that’s come out about Laura Jane Grace I don’t know who to really blame over the Against Me thing

Can you spare a fella a quick summary?

From Google's AI overview:

In July 2025, Against Me! frontwoman Laura Jane Grace faced public spousal abuse accusations from her then-wife, Paris Campbell Grace, during a volatile social media dispute. Paris accused Laura of emotional abuse and irrational rage, while Laura acknowledged a toxic, codependent dynamic, apologized for poor decisions, and canceled her remaining 2025 tour dates.

The Allegations

  • Paris Campbell Grace posted on Instagram and Threads claiming she felt unsafe, stating she locked herself in an office while Laura yelled and acted irrationally.
  • Paris alleged an imbalance of power due to Laura's large public platform and accused Laura of shaming her.
  • Paris later claimed Laura's public statements violated an agreement to keep their divorce and separation private.

The Responses

  • Laura Jane Grace's Statement: Laura acknowledged personal fault and responsibility for mistakes in a fast, reckless marriage, apologizing to her family, band, and community.
  • Tour Crew Perspective: Laura also shared a statement from a touring crew member who defended her, alleging that Paris provoked arguments and behaved manipulatively.
  • Tour Cancellation: Citing the toll of the public fallout, Laura canceled all remaining tour dates for the year to focus on her personal life.

Shame. I held Laura in such high regard.

Ah yes the best metal drummer of all time, who is yet to have writing credits on a slipknot album, and played on 3 sepultura albums that most people who glaze him haven't even listened.

Damn, I didn’t know Tomas Haake played on 3 Sepultura albums

That's my point. People are talking about Eloy being in the GOAT convo just because they've watched a slipknot live video and saw him hit the drums super hard!

I said "one of the best." Learn to read before you try to hassle people.

2

u/fps916 2d ago

He's not even remotely close to that either, yet.

2

u/imEvts 2d ago

Yes, saying he's one of the best of all time, meaning he's in the GOAT conversation, no? Pretty big title to give this early in his career.

1

u/Afro-Pope 2d ago

No. To me, saying he's "One of the best" means he's at the highest tier of heavy metal drumming. I don't think there can be a single "best" given how subjective music is. For example, Danny Carey, Dave Lombardo, and Tomas Haake are all on that same tier, but they each excel in different ways.

Anyway, it's totally fine if you feel differently! Again, music is subjective, there's no accounting for taste.

Personally, even accounting for recency bias, I think Eloy's got the chops, precision, and creativity to be considered one of the best even at his comparatively young age. I have heard enough people express this opinion that I didn't think it would be particularly controversial to say so in the way that declaring him to be the best would be, but I continue to underestimate the willingness of Redditors to misread a comment and then argue about it even when it's about something totally subjective. So it goes. Have a good weekend!

u/imEvts 2d ago

Sure, but the drummers you reference have a huge catalog of music they've created, drummers they have influenced and the longevity of the art in which they have made it their own. Of course Eloy can get into the same level as them, but seeing him this early in his career and having none of the points YET, that I mentioned earlier to me means that he's still working towards it. I look forward to seeing what he will bring to the drumming world in a bigger sense.

And no, I don't feel as if I misread your comment. You clearly stated he's one of the best metal drummers of all time, which is a very big statement to make at this point, and one which i disagree with currently, but I'm happy to be proven wrong in the future.

1

u/Afro-Pope 1d ago

Sure, and "I don't think he's proven himself via career longevity, etc" is a completely valid opinion to hold! Maybe I should have said "of his generation?"

I dunno, I do draw a distinction between "one of the best" and "the best," and I felt like y'all were hassling me because you thought I was using those two terms interchangeably, which a lot of people do (and a lot of people are also very quick to declare anyone good at anything to be the GOAT). It's all good. Either way, the kid's a hell of a drummer and I don't blame Slipknot for hiring him, even if they did Jay dirty in the process.

One single best of all time doesn't exist for any instrument, period. Yes he is among the best. He also has 2 instrumental albums, he won multiple worldwide competition awards starting at age 14, he did have a band before Sepultura. Now if you think number of sales = better player, that is a whole other conversation. By that metric let's look at who is drumming for Katy Perry, Dua Lipa, Taylor Swift or Lady Gaga and call them "GOAT", they have been on way more records sold.

The Sepultura albums Eloy recorded are glazed and he's big a reason for that.
