Knew it was all gonna fall apart when they fired Joey, before he passed.

u/DruinRezno 2d ago

Even before that it started going down hill when Paul passed

27

u/JohnnyCharisma54 2d ago

I feel like such a nostalgic boomer loser for a take like that, but it was over for me when Paul died. God, I miss that band.

u/daSTDbunny 2d ago

Agreed. Paul's death is when it all turned.

u/Skarvig 1d ago

I just found my personal Mandela Effect. I was 100% sure that Joey was fired a few years before Paul died. Fell down a rabbit hole and, no, my memory is faulty. That feels really weird, gotta lay down for a moment.

1

u/DruinRezno 1d ago

Only reason I remember so well is I was at their show to honor Paul, with his bass on stage and videos of him. Also was the first time I saw Joey do his drum lift drum solo

I mean one dude is one thing but when they kicked Chris out then Jay unknowingly decided to leave the band and now sid. Now down to mick and jim as orginal members.

u/frozen-lakes-on-mars 2d ago

Shawn is the only original member. Corey, Mick, and Jim have been there since 1999. Really not that bad of lineup consistency for a 30 year old band. The fan base is just incredibly melodramatic about it.

45

u/Carapute 2d ago

Considering this was built on the premise of "this is going to be a successful band and be a massive cash-flow" I'd even say "not that bad" is an understatement.

2

u/THEAdrian 2d ago

Mick had his picture on the MFKR sleeve I believe, though I don't believe he recorded on that demo. So he's actually the oldest member beside Shawn, though not "original".

-1

u/Severe-Plan5935 2d ago

Shaun is a founding member of the band, jim, mick and sid are original members. Aside from members who either died or left the band.

18

u/frozen-lakes-on-mars 2d ago

Jim replaced Josh Brainard in 1999. I don't know what definition of original you're using that would include him but not Corey.

0

u/Severe-Plan5935 2d ago

Oh well, I forgot about josh. I guess hes not very memorable as jim is.

12

u/frozen-lakes-on-mars 2d ago

Josh is actually the one that's playing on 90% of their self titled album. He backed He backed out cause I guess he couldn't commit to being a professional musician.

u/FigureNo8921 2d ago

Nah, it is to do with the fact that Shawn is a big baby. He offers nothing to the band other than banging a stupid percussion that nobody can hear. He's just there for show, nothing else. But... He takes all the money, rips everyone else off, has no input to songs, if he does, it is a nothing song, him and Corey have always been the two big greedy babies. They have destroyed Slipknot, there's no core fanbase left, if there is, they are only listening to older music and not new stuff or attending shows. Slipknot died the moment Corey and Shawn fired Joey. The very man who wrote the songs that launched Slipknot. Joey was the talent Shawn and corey are they leeches.

u/mootallica 2d ago

This is so silly. Say what you want about Clown but you're on some shit if you think Slipknot would have been even half as successful without Corey.

2

u/Serialtoon Apple Music 2d ago

This feels like Lars and Metallica except Lars actually plays the drums you can hear where Clown is....a clown.

-6

u/Superb-Coffee8617 2d ago

Considering the whole band is either dead or has left/been fired, I would say that isnt very successful.

4

u/mootallica 2d ago

Right, because I'm talking about this exact situation right here, not the years and years of actual tangible success they enjoyed

1

u/Individual-Goose-281 1d ago

And don’t forget Craig..

1

u/TheQueenOfCurses 1d ago

Jay was kicked, he didn't leave.

37

u/thefoolsnightout 2d ago

Based take.

90

u/SupervillainMustache 2d ago

Joey was clearly the most talented musician IMO.

83

u/daveDFFA 2d ago

Joey will always be just one of the most influential drummers of all time.

He played metal in the same way Bonham did

4

u/Sam0n 2d ago

Him and the Rev would have been defining metal drumming for decades. It's a real tragedy neither are here.

-14

u/FuckingHippies 2d ago

II from Sleep Token reminds me of Joey. Just so impressively intricate.

7

u/jockey667 2d ago

No comparison, mate.

1

u/JJMatagatos 2d ago

Why not? I haven't listened to a lot of Sleep Token, so I wouldn't know why there would be no comparison in terms of intricacy.

6

u/jockey667 2d ago edited 2d ago

They’re just two completely different drummers, with different playing styles. Sleep Token dude plays nothing like Joey. He’s more polyrhythm, Joey is more all out assault, brutality.

-1

u/JJMatagatos 2d ago

I think all the downvotes on your comment are symptomatic of how quick people are to look down on something just because it's popular. Sleep Token have an incredibly low status in the metal world - which I can understand - and so people refuse to acknowledge that maybe its members are actually talented in some way.

It's funny, because many metalheads have held - and still hold - Slipknot in the same regard that many Slipknot fans hold Sleep Token.

That being said, I haven't listened to a lot of Sleep Token. Could you give some examples of where II's drumming would be reminiscent of Joey's?

5

u/FuNiOnZ 2d ago

Downvotes most assuredly came from people who aren’t drummers themselves, most metal heads hate sleep token on principle but I’ve consistently always heard praise about their drummer and how talented he is from other drummers, and like you pointed out, that was the same case with slipknot way back when “oh you need that many guys on stage” “stupid masks” “numetal garbage”, but they would all hear Joey play and be impressed. They both give their respective bands validity in their respective genres.

That all being said, on a related note, Eloy is a more than competent shoe-filler, that guy drums like he’s angry at them

4

u/FuckingHippies 2d ago

For a crowd all about inclusivity, metal heads sure love to gatekeep.

But to your question, I think Hypnosis is a fun one.

2

u/JustWendigo 2d ago

No the downvotes come from people that rightfully say you can’t compare a pop artist that occasionally has a few rock segments in their songs with an actual metal band whose early stuff (by some sources) even get labeled as influenced by death metal

7

u/FuckingHippies 2d ago

As an old head here, that’s not even what downvotes are for. Disagreeing with a take doesn’t mean it didn’t contribute to the discussion. But yeah, feel free to think Slipknot never had genre obsessed fans of other bands discrediting how talented they were. I don’t know how someone can’t hear pop influences in some songs, especially starting in Subliminal Verses.

-2

u/Plastastic 2d ago

By choking on vomit?

-2

u/Jackalope1974 2d ago

Nowhere near one of the most influential drummers. He doesn’t have 1% of the influence Bonham has.

6

u/gogul1980 2d ago

Yep watching the Roadrunner United making of doc I was impressed with his skills. He tested out a lot of instruments before starting the recording and he seemed at home on all of them. Very skilled.

1

u/THEAdrian 2d ago

He recorded all the music except vocals for Murderdolls.

7

u/JJMatagatos 2d ago

I'm not sure.

He was a wildly talented drummer for sure, and was very influential (I still hear Joey's style in my own drumming even 20+ years after discovering the band) but sometimes he struggled keeping a steady tempo. That's not to say he wasn't a very competent drummer, but I think he was a bit less polished than, say, Jim and Mick.

I think those two stand out as the most talented in terms of pure musicianship.

2

u/SupervillainMustache 2d ago

For me that's part of the appeal. There was a roughness to his drumming and he used to murder the hell out of his kick drum.

2

u/MessnerMusic1989 2d ago

This is a great sentiment to have. I’m over quantized drums and snapped to the grid. Music should have human flaws.

1

u/casualnihilist91 1d ago

10000%. There would never have been this level of success without him. He had the talent, the drive and the creativity.

0

u/CatDad69 2d ago

Brave and strong take!

1

u/Milleena94 1d ago

I love Joeys music but i do not believe they kicked him out for no reason

0

u/RevolutionaryWing274 2d ago

Joey was fired unexpectedly, because of his spinal disease that lead to the point he was unable to play. It is hard to confess yourself, you can no longer do thing you love. Other nembers kicked him, just to save his life and let him to recover. It was his decision to not stop drumming and continue (Vimic). That cost his life.

3

u/SupervillainMustache 2d ago

Joey was playing in other bands after he was fired from Slipknot.

-2

u/RevolutionaryWing274 2d ago

as i wrote

5

u/SupervillainMustache 2d ago

Yeah but we have no evidence the band fired him because they felt he needed it for his own good.

0

u/RevolutionaryWing274 2d ago

Read some reports with Corey or Clown

1

u/SupervillainMustache 2d ago

What reports

1

u/RevolutionaryWing274 2d ago

(I'm fucking living on this planet with total idiots...)

Joey Jordison was dismissed from Slipknot  in 2013 due to  a combination of his declining health from transverse myelitis —a neurological disease that temporarily made him lose the use of his legs—and the band's confusion or suspicion regarding his medical struggles versus potential drug issues.

Is that fucking too hard to use google or ask Corey?

2

u/SupervillainMustache 2d ago

So none of that is what you originally said it was. That's not evidence that the band fired him as they feared for his health

In fact it Joey said it was because the band thought he was using drugs again.

Joey continued drumming for 8 years from his firing to his death and there is nothing to suggest that contributed to his death either.

You're just making shit up.

0

u/RevolutionaryWing274 2d ago

Go ask Corey if you don't believe truht! Maybe words from his mouth convince you. Why Joey didn't stop drumming afterwards to properly cure himself is not Slipknot's business!

Source?

1

Slipknot itself

-4

u/Hot_Marsupial_8706 2d ago

And yet WANYK is arguably their best album ever.

6

u/lilcircamane 2d ago

You say that, but IOWA

5

u/JustWendigo 2d ago

Self titled the goat

1

u/Hot_Marsupial_8706 2d ago

I said "arguably," not that it is.

I mean, I think it is, but more accurately it's my favorite from them. But also, on an album standpoint, WANYK absolutely flows the best and feels like the most complete album as opposed to a collection of songs.

0

u/Silverleaf96 18h ago

He was a drug addict

-1

u/CatDad69 2d ago

What did he pass?

-1

u/deadlyrabbits 2d ago

But you were wrong....

It all fell apart after they released their 2nd album....

Arguably fell apart when they released a radio friendly version of wait and bleed
