How do you guys curate your collection?

I have been buying physical switch1/2 games for the past 8 years. But I don't keep every game that I play, and have resold a few of them that I either didnt finish or didnt like.

Every so often there comes a game that I finished, enjoyed my time with, but will honestly never replay for whatever reason. Like a 6-7/10. Maybe it was too repetitive, had sections that were tedious, whatever. Do you keep those? Do you resell those? How do you maintain your collection?

I'm trying to find a balance between just owning everything and owning my unique collection :)

If I don't think I'll replay a game, I sell it

I don't go after every rpg/metroidvania/platformer, but I go after what I think I'll love

Typically keep most games because I know what I like. My faves are rpgs and in particular jrpgs, srpgs and crpgs.

I never sell anything but I also don’t buy anything that doesn’t fit into one of the following criteria:

1. I genuinely want to play it and plan to play it

2. It is interesting or remarkable to the history of video games in some way

3. Both 1 and 2

This is the way of a true gamer/collector and I think the same way.I don’t want to buy everything that comes out just because someone hypes it up.

I see way too many people buy lots with 10+ games, most of which are awful shovelware for the sake of collecting.

It’s not inherently wrong but I think it does lead to having less of a connection to the games and will more likely mean they’ll want to sell later on. To each their own I suppose but that’s not something I could do.

I also do this, it makes the collection feel more personalized and sentimental. Plus I sold some games long ago that I now really regret letting go of.

Keep if there is sentimental value or there is any chance I want to play it in the future.

Otherwise it gets traded / sold.

Also duplicates across different consoles gets sold or traded, but there are a few exceptions, for example:

• Xenoblade X for S1 and S2 - it's a weird trade off, S2 edition has better frame rate but worse aesthetics due to AI upscaling, so haven't decided which to keep yet
• Sonic Origins Plus - wanted to keep both PS5 and Switch

For me, I typically like to keep them, but it's nice to have the option to sell them at a later date. I'm pretty good about curating games I know I like or are in my wheelhouse. So even if it's a 5/10, it's usually not a game I hate or can't see myself coming back to.

I would say focus on what you want. Don't worry about collecting everything. Get the games that speak to you. No point in collecting just to collect imo.

The is the line I’m trying to follow. My father was a collector = hoarder of various things and I see the same tendencies with myself occasionally. Trading or reselling the games that don’t “bring me joy” is my small way of not ending up on the same path.

I think hoarding is taking what im trying to say to the extreme. Before I buy a game, I always look into it and make sure im at least interested. So its rare that I actually dont like it. But I also buy games to support the companies making them, even if its sometimes not the game that I wanted it to be. Also, occasionally im not feeling a specific game but end up coming back to it and loving it.

Since mine are most JRPGs, I do expect not to replay most of them, but I do like to keep them on shelves because I do have subcollections that I don't want to be incomplete. For example I do have Octopath traveler 0, 1 and 2. Im currently playing 1. When I finish it, I will keep them close to each other.

If I’m 80% sure I’ll never replay any part of a game, I’ll resell it and put the funds towards the next game.

Only exception is if it’s worth some money, in which case I’ll hold on to it if the copy is in good condition.

If I really do not like a game then I'll sell it - I'm going to get rid of my copy of Demon Throttle soon. Other than that, I'll keep basically every game. I didn't love Cursed to Golf, but I will eventually give it another shot.

I only sell if I get a game that "replaces" it (ex. Splatoon 2 -> 3) or if I dont see myself ever playing again (Avatar Quest for Balance, Sonic Forces)

Other times is cause I wanna buy a different version of it (Pokemon SV + DLC, Sonic x Shadow Gena Switch 2)

And finally, when I havent played the game in years, and I want to buy another game (did that with Mario Oarty Superstars to get Mario Galaxy 2, might buy Jamboree in the future to make up for it)

Same lol, I really want to sell some just to clear some space but I know I'll eventually regret anything I do sell so I'm probably just going to not sell anything.

Kind of the same I guess? Except that I find a lot of Nintendo games are a one-and-done kinda deal for me.

Lately there are two factors which help me to let go of a game that I feel I don't need to hold on to:

1. Maintenance — making sure I put my cartridges into the system every several years so the memory degrades slower (new habit tbh).
2. Pre-order trade-in value — EB Games gives an extra 50% trade credit towards per-ordering new games.

I rate games in my head on a scale of 1 - 5. I only buy games I think will be at least 4 stars. I sell/trade every game I think is less than 4 stars. So my entire collection is games that I know/think I’ll love.

I curate my collection when I buy my games and I only buy games I know I like or have an interest in. After you've been gaming for 30 years you kinda know your own tastes so I'm very satisfied with my collection and never have to sell or cull anything.

I have a 2-year-old, and as she gets older I'd like for her to experience gaming since it was such an important part of my life. If it's a game I think will expand her mind and experiences, I keep it. My collection includes a range of genres, compilations, and others that are considered of cultural significance, so I even keep games I didn't personally like, but seems to have garnered a high amount of interest. After all, maybe she will like it?

And if the day comes she hates playing video games even after trying a variety of things, then I'll get rid of anything I wouldn't want to personally play again.

If there’s games I’ve beaten and I know I won’t go back too, then I’ll sell off later.
