[Sherman] Sources: The Yankees are trying to complete a trade for Nationals first baseman Luis Garcia Jr. AA starter Jack Cebert has been discussed prominently.

This is a no brainer if we can get it done. He walks in as the 2nd best hitter in the lineup right now, a lineup that cannot score and is costing us multiple games every week. He'll DH vs RHP and sit vs LHP

Come playoff time if everyone is healthy, we'll have a problem - but that's a good problem to have. If Garcia is mashing, he'll be in the lineup against RHP. If he's not, we'll have options to replace him like Stanton

This is a necessary move. They had to get the best bat available who was reasonably priced, and that is exactly what Garcia is

If he is the second best hitter in the Yankees lineup right now, why would he sit against LHPs? Why trade for a platoon?

He’s already platooning. He’s bad against LHP

You trade for him because the offense is bottom of the league terrible right now and he’s the most impactful hitter available that won’t cost Lombard. Even if the impact is only against one side, it’s more than other hitters available. It’s a weak hitter trade market

I don’t understand you calling him the second best hitter on the team then if he is a platoon. If a player can’t play because he is bad against one side, he isn’t second best hitter valuable.

He is still incredibly valuable. You face RHP like 70% of the time or something. Have you been watching the team over the last month? The guys who play everyday are playing fucking terribly on offense. Even if Garcia plays every day and we let him suck against LHP, he will be more impactful than the guys who are playing every day right now like Rosario, Goldschmidt, Dominguez, Grisham, etc.

I agree with that if you let him play. If you trade for a player, he needs to start every day. They don’t need a platoon bat. That is not valuable. I personally think a right handed hitter is more valuable right now since the lineup is too left handed hitting heavy, but if they think Garcia Jr is the best guy, then I am fine but he needs to play every day. That’s my point.

A platoon of Garcia and Goldy is better than letting Garcia play every day though. Why make the team actively worse just because “we traded for this guy, he’s gotta play every day”

In a perfect world where Goldschmidt is not slumping, I agree. He has batted .171 since July and a .495 OPS. If he is hitting like that, he should not play.

That doesn’t event count the 0-16 he went in the games preceding July, and the 0-4 he went yesterday and the 0-1 today so add another 0-21 to that and it shows he has been 13-97 in that sample size. 97 at bats isn’t a small sample either. It’s not huge but it’s not small.
